Using SLI 580's 1.5Gb, are the 185.62's still the best for this set-up?

I've been trying to figure out how to fix BF3 hard-locking my system - I've got a thread running over at battlelog.org (community support, less childish than at the official battlelog forums ;)) - but... I'm not getting any progress and I'm losing my wits with this. To put it succinctly, it seems the last patch basically killed this game (including campaign, mainly concerned with MP though). Since the thread at battlelog.org cannot be viewed without registering, I'll try and cover every fix. First, my specs of course: OS: Win 7 64bit CPU: Intel i7 2600k (@ 4.8GHz, ~1.38V) Mobo: Asus P8Z68 Deluxe RAM: 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB) 1600MHz @ 1.5V (stock/factory profile/XMP) HDD: OS, Origin, and BF3 on Crucial M4 256GB SSD (have two other 2TB drives on Intel RST split-drive RAID volumes) PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W Sound: [Onboard] Realtek AC889 -- [USB] Logitech G35 - (in the process of "fixes", I'm now using my old (2005) Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS PCI card) GPU: 2x EVGA Geforce 560 Ti 2GB [for reference: I run a triple-monitor 6060x1080 resolution, bezel-corrected] First, figured... perhaps it's the infamous Realtek audio conflicts? Certainly not (especially considering it is completely disabled in BIOS and Driver Sweeper cleaned out everything left behind by Realtek drivers (including LAN, as I'm using the Intel onboard LAN, Realtek LAN currently disabled in BIOS as well) GPUs currently on BIOS 1.1. Using Afterburner, I have them returned to reference clocks, and currently trying (with fail) 1.062V. Punkbuster has been uninstalled, reinstalled, manually updated, caressed, slapped... but I don't get kicks and never really suspected it was the issue (this was before I gave Campaign another try and discovered it too freezes/hard-locks my system). BF3 and Origin completely uninstalled, reinstalled, repair installed... nope. Tried a few drivers (up till the patch, was running fine on the 301.24 beta, then tried 301.42 WHQL, then 304.48 beta, then 296.10 WHQL, now on 304.79 beta - no difference). All drivers that could be updated, have been updated. Currently running a "clean-boot" environment - minimal background processes. Afterburner seems to have no impact, system lockup regardless if it is running or not - so I've been keeping it for the user fan profile. Even updated Mobo BIOS and had to re-do my CPU overclock. Rest assured, that OC hasn't changed and was stable for BF3 since launch - and stable everywhere else too. I also dropped the OC down some before trying the new BIOS - no improvement. Also, in that process I also completely cleared out all dust. High Precision Event Timer is enabled across the board. (previously, was enabled in BIOS, not enabled in Win7... who knew it wasn't enabled by default? :P) Origin In-Game disabled. In the process of messing with audio drivers, cleared out Nvidia HD audio drivers. The controllers associated with them are also Disabled in Device Manager. Core Parking has been disabled. As for in-game visual settings - mostly a mix of Low and Medium settings, Post-process AA on High (it's free anyhow), AO set to SSAO. I think I used to run with it set to Off, so I could try that again. But even then, playing the most stressful 64p servers in CQ or base maps, I rarely dip below 45fps - most often I am near my 59fps cap. No BSODs, no error codes, nothingof import in Event Viewer. I hope I covered enough. If this should be moved from this thread, feel free. I figure more people looking at this can't hurt, maybe give me some new ideas. I fear there really aren't any other things to try though. I did just try setting Origin and BF3.exe to "Run as Admin" - but... I don't know if I did that before or after my last Campaign test. I don't think I put it to the test, so that will be tomorrow. BTW, that clean boot environment? ASUS software is gone (services disabled too, and apps "disabled" in Task Scheduler), all Logitech software is currently prevented from running at boot (Set Point and a few others), nor is the Razer utility running. G35 is also currently uninstalled (but now it seems audio in general has been ruled out as the source of problems) For reference: Logitech G700 mouse (crashes wireless, like I play, or wired) ; Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth keyboard Help please, kind sir! :) Would be much appreciated!

OK, but when I use FRAPS with 301.42 it cuts the GPU usage in half, and it feels very sluggish. On the 185.62 drivers I can record with all settings bar textures on ultra, MSAA x 4, HBAO and still get 85-90 fps. Any thoughts?

Fraps recording needs to be setup properly with the correct settings and hardware. Sounds like you either have the recording settings to low (FPS) or you have them to high for recording to storage (bottleneck) *Also you must use the latest version of Fraps -and- understand the changes that have been made to the program the last few years which have been very complex and can negatively effect performance levels.

Its the latest version of fraps. I understand what you are saying, but when I re-installed the 185.62 drivers( after trying 301.42- and not getting good results) Fraps usage went back to normal. I will re-install and try again......... EDIT*** OK all working perfectly now I must not have installed the drivers cleanly yesterday. Thankyou Maniac, and thankyou for your guide

The Auto detect function now works correctly, thats what I am using now. Users may certainly continue to play with the value for best performance/gameplay on their systems

maniacvvv, You never did answer about HBAO. I was curious. How come you wont play with it on even with sli 580's? Something about it you don't like? I hear people complaining while it looks great outside. Inside it can be to dark?

Oh I love it... great feature thats well done in BF3 But when -really- playing... I prefer it off, for the performance increase and increased visablity in variable lighting conditions.

Hey everyone, Boy this thread is really loooong! Didn't really manage to read all of it. But if there are any Jet/Heli Pilots (or everyone that can) make sure you set Mesh Quality to ULTRA. The reason is that with it on ULTRA you can spot infantry and vehicles from real far away. A real big advantage! Also, if you haven't tried out Color Blind mode, I'd recommend that you do so. Its just better! (How's that for a review :P)

Colorblind Mode simply changes the colors of some HUD elements and text, but it can also be the source of BF3 crashing in some cases. Nice effort though

maniacvvv, I know about the Mesh quality Ultra to be a fact as an experienced pilot. You have to try playing on high and then ultra to see the difference.

The draw "distance" is unaffected by the mesh quality setting. You are mistaking object detail for distance, and these are NOT the same. Yes, objects may appear "clearer" at a distance, but the distance at which such objects are drawn is unaffected.

Hey Maniacvvv, I was wondering if you could suggest some settings for my rig. I set up BF3 again using your guide as a reference. I play BF3 in Surround mode and get decent frames with everything set to high and in 5820x1080 119hz resolution. On the single player level I tested it on (the one in the parking lot with the 2 rpgs in the building) I get between 55min-75max frames with an average at about 62. Everything is great except for the mouse micro stutter I get when strafing and looking around. Its not HORRIBLE but its quite distracting. I use a gamepad (xbox) and mouse combo. When I strictly use the gamepad its very smooth but if I start using the mouse I get the stutter. I was using a wireless logitech trackball mouse but switched to a wired m500 mouse to see if it made a difference. I've tried many things like disabling HTing, changing the mouse as I said, changed mouse settings, made some config changes etc but nothing works. I'm hoping you might have some more ideas. My OS is 64bit Windows 7 and my GPU's are only 1.5gb. Could it be my video cards not having enough vram?

Welcome to the EVGA forums Sounds like your in-game settings are good, given the framerates you posted. You issue with input stuttering is NOT a Vram or graphics problem, its related to how the game processes inputs and how the device inputs (keyboard, mouse and in your case an extra gamepad) are being polled. You havent posted enough hardware information on your config for me to know what might be going on... It could be USB overpolling (too many devices and/or to high of polling rates), could be input device driver conflict issues, could be the frames to render ahead setting in the NVCP (try using the default "use the 3d application setting" and it could even be a gamepad "pot" leak... Ect Etc Try using the default NVCP setting for frames to render ahead, and then try an unplug any "extra" USB devices like Webcams, USB Hubs, Memory sticks... anything USB thats not needed for BF3, as you may be having bandwith issues. You dont have any USB platter storage drives do you? If that does not help, posting more info on you exact hardware (MB model, CPU, RAM, Sound device(s) and what keyboard.. also what drivers are installed for each input device, would really help towards understanding what might be going on.

Yo Maniac, i understand most of the stuff you have been posting but i just wanted to clear something up that i had been wondering about My setup: Intel Core i5 2500k @ 4.8 (60c full load) Asus Sabertooth Z77 16GB Corsair Dominator @ 9-9-9-24 1333 2T SLI EVGA GTX 670 2GB Ref (Non oc'd atm) Mushkin Chronos 120GB SF Sata3 Mushkin Chronos 60GB SF Sata3 Windows 7 64 Razer Lycosa Razer Deathadder Logitech G35 304.48 Nvidia Drivers I play with Vsync on because i'm OCD about visual quality, i still get really banging performance, but on certain maps like a 64 man Metro server, it can once in a blue moon dip from 60 to 57 I play on 1920x1080, Everything Ultra, MSAA x4, AA Post Off, Blur Off, HBAO On. Is there anything you would recommend with my setup, being changed in the NVCP. Is that normal playing with Vsync on?, It doesn't happen allot, just once in awhile. I've played around with the triple buffering option, And as far as i can tell that option doesn't effect BF3 at all because its a D3D game and not an OpenGL game.
