first 1080 I had was a palit jet stream that I returned to get the 1080ftw, then I returned that because of the black screen fan issue and got my classified....... just wish I kept the palit as it ran cooler and was still boosting to the same clocks as both my evga cards do . Also it dose not suffer from any of the problems were seeing on here..........




so whats wrong with the Classy? There should be no problems with it, i dont think theres anything running out of specs. Anything annoying about the cards? I would never change that for a Palit. On the other hand the Classy is really made for aftermarket cooling, you should put a "real" cooler on it. And what about the Classified-Controller, does this software still work with the new GDDRX-memory? You can outperform pretty much all other 980s by just running the memory with 4200-4300mhz, thx to the overvoltage.option. You dont have that on other 980s. Up to 1,8 Volts. But i dont think i would enjoy that with the custom cooler, especially not this generation^^

so whats wrong with the Classy? There should be no problems with it, i dont think theres anything running out of specs. Anything annoying about the cards? I would never change that for a Palit. And what about the Classified-Controller, does this software still work with the new GDDRX-memory? You can outperform pretty much all other 980s by just running the memory with 4200-4300mhz, thx to the overvoltage.option. You dont have that on other 980s. Up to 1,8 Volts. But i dont think i would enjoy that with the custom cooler, especially not this generation^^


classified has different mosfets. but the same cooling method: the cooling plate. 
we all know the cooling plate performance. it wont kill your card if you dont run furmark 24/7. during gaming like bf1 which is a very demanding game, vrm temp is fine too.
 
but, higher vrm temp affects the capability of the vrm. if cooling plate is removed, you should find that gpu temp will be hotter and power draw will be lower.
 
back plate cant improve cooling except thermal pads are applied for spreading the heat from the vrm to the metal back plate.

That is right in the hotspot area and my card died the same way. Heat can cause thermal runaway causing components to operate out of spec and can indeed cause components to explode- it's not purely the heat but the effects of the heat on the function of the components.

Has EVGA released a guide / walk through or video on how to apply the thermal pads to the card? I thought it was supposed to be done by the end of the week?

Each card so far that's exploded have had the failures in roughly the same area. Could just be a bad coincidence but I'd say the heat is effecting components in the general vicinity causing premature failure. A bit worrisome considering we are only a few months into the release.
 
Having 2 1070's FTW's I'm extremely disappointed in my purchases at this stage. First it was the Micron issue (granted it was an NVIDIA problem) now this all within the space of a few weeks. And all I've been offered for it is a $2 thermal pad after spending $1400AUD. I'm not after any sort of compensation don't get me wrong, it's a just a bitter pill to swallow considering the money spent and now the onus is on us as a consumer to fix their errors.
 
EVGA haven't even mentioned anything regarding warranty and physical damage caused by people removing the cooler to install the thermal pads. Another reason why I'm reluctant to remove the coolers on my cards. I mean a simple slip of a screwdriver etc means $650 down the drain. Nor have they provided an RMA option for those who either can't or are reluctant to perform the changes themselves.
 
Another annoying factor is if I choose not to do the mod and my card(s) die, I'm forced to pay for shipping back to Taiwan from Australia. Might not be an issue for some but when you're talking upwards of $70 to send a parcel with tracking and insurance to protect against loss/damage it's rather expensive.
 
Also for those saying the thermal mod is optional when you sit back and think about it it's really not. I very much doubt EVGA would take the time and money to send out thermal pads to so many users if it was simply an optional fix. They also wouldn't be including the thermal pads on new cards rolling off the factory line if it wasn't necessary. The only real option you have is do the mod or take the chance your card doesn't die an early death due to the lack of VRM cooling.
 
Whilst I'm thankful EVGA is on the ball and assisting it's customers, I'm just a little deflated and feeling let down at the option given to us.

IF EVGA is saying this cards are running within SPEC, so what are all these reports about explodes? this is the third one I see, and exactly the same spot, could it be something else causing that other than "missing thermal pad" issue? could it be a batch batch with different/bad IC's or whatever have been shipped? There is a lot of mixed issues that all started to happen at same time started from micron issue and ended with thermal pad issue and even EVGA stated that there is some bad IC have been used in their GTX 1080 FTW cards (small numbers) but you can see to many issues are showing and we don't know what is the real cause?

I guess with the thermal pads, EVGA also sent a thermal putty quality to replace the gpu when opened, right?

I think it is related to the FTW more than the SC
It looks the FTW VRAM design is very close to the hotspot, the hotspot is still there on the SC but it is not very close to the VRAM like the FTW so EVGA just offering the thermal pad for all the ACX series as it will still lower the temps on the SC but it looks the FTW is much more affected by this issue.

Disappointing EVGA didn't decide to install these from the beginning, seems like an obvious and affordable move to increase the thermal overhead and keep the customers happy.

I bought my FTW card from Amazon with international shipping to Egypt, what can EVGA do for me in that case if I want to send back the card? sending the card back to Amazon is going to cost me $150 shipping cost and I have to order a new card and pay again international shipping and import fess which is total $200, so total loss for me is $350.

Wow. My 1080 had to be replaced twice due to black screen and fan issue. I've order the thermal pads, but it just feels like I'm QCing the cards for them at this point. I'm concern what new issue is going to pop up next week or next month.

Anyone else with a 1070 FTW getting frequent crashes in games, with the screen stuck as it was and sound looping on your speakers?  My card worked fine for a couple months, but now consistently crashes, with graphically demanding games crashing the quickest.

I cant find the information if GTX 1070 SC Gaming is also affected with this issue?
 
If yes, I will send card back (got it from Amazon, so I have 30 days time to send back)
I just want to avoid to get problems in few months, because then I have to send the card for RMA and that will take time. For sure 3 weeks. I want live without PC so long




I've not seen a report of the SC having this issue, but EVGA is offering pads for free for that card as well. I've already put my request in for my 1070 SC(can't hurt right?), I've never had a reason to take a GPU apart, so I'm actually kind excited to do it.

Bad luck, but in how bad you are the change, Amazon always gives the face, in my country the pccomponentes store does not return me the money or I change it on the other end you will have to face EVGA since I bought warranty for 5 years, at that time if your problem explodes, I have not been to blame for his wrong doing.

My crashes don't go to black screen - rather, the monitor keeps showing the last image of the game at the time of crash.  Very weird.

I had my SC 1070 since July this year (granted I did an RMA a month after for coil whine), and no issues thus far. I run a modest overclock as well, both clock and memory. Granted I have a full-tower case

Well, I guess I'll just take EVGA's word for it and continue using my 1080 FTW like I have been for the past 2 months, since there is clearly nothing to worry about

I am very sorry to hear that you feel this way.  I can confirm that there seems to be this misconception that there is a heat issue with these 1080/1070 cards when there really isn't.  The thermal pads in question are in no way required and these cards run within spec, within the thermal tolerances of its components without them.  We have tested the card to prove this with more accurate thermal probes and even in extreme temperatures and conditions this has proven true.
 
We are offering the thermal pads for free to any EVGA customer that requests them with a qualifying product and we are offering this as an option to help lower the temperatures, but they are not required.
 
I see customers trying to link different failures that have occurred on a few cards, but please understand that there are many reasons that a card can fail and there truly is no link to be made.  Please also keep in mind that there are a lot of outside factors or sometimes a product can just have a failure, but in either circumstance EVGA is here to help our customers with troubleshooting and/or warranty if the card is not working as it should.

The thermal pads are in no way required and completely optional as mentioned previously, but if a customer would like us to help them with exchanging their card through warranty to install these optional thermal pads then we are willing to do this even though they are not necessary.  We just want our customers to be happy with their product and if lower temps are preferred then we we willing to help with this.
 
I can confirm that Jacob is one of our product managers and he has access to all of the ins and outs and anything that he says is true.  I am just trying to explain that the cards are running within spec and not overheating without this optional mod.

Do we have to return our cards direct to EVGA for this or can we just ask our retailers to organise this so we arent left without a GPU to use?

Is this a new policy? I really don't want to take apart my 1070ftw but I really don't to not worry anymore. I am even contemplating just doing a step up... My card was listed as shipping from evga before the 31st IIRC
