I finally gave up on the store bought brands and the burnt Starbucks coffees. Dunkin Donuts coffee wan't bad, but too meek for my tastes. I finally broke down and ordered some from two on line companies and was wowed by the flavors of real freshly roasted and ground coffee. I got the Kenya AA, Jamaican Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona. I got the Jamaican from a place called preciousprovisions.com and the others for a place called specialtyjava.com. Even though Specialty Java has the Jamaican, I think it is better form Precious Provisions. But the Kona and the Kenya just blwo me away with their flavor.
Any other coffee connoisseurs here?

Starbucks Kenya coffee.  Although I prefer to buy the beans and brew it myself -- I agree that Starbucks tends to "burn" their coffee.

Hard for me to say really.  It's easier for me to simply say I don't like Dunkin Donuts coffee (although it's almost a religious symbol up here in the NE).

I like it very strong (as in grow hair on your tongue strong).

There's plenty of coffees out there that fit the bill.

I don't consider myself a coffee connoisseur, however, I do like Folgers' Classic Roast. It's not too dark, nor Mild, but just perfect.

    I like coffee ...

    Black.

    Are there different types?

Seriously, I buy coffee grounds at the grocery store and then grind them and then run hot water through them.  You get the idea.  I didn't know that this was a complicated process which had followers of different brands, types, etc.

I can't say that I know what coffee shops and brands are all about.

I hope you're kidding.  Coffee is a $70 billion dollar a year industry.

To put that in perspective, the entire gaming industry worldwide does about $10 billion a year.  Porn does about $12 billion.

    Unfortunately, I am not.

I buy coffee grounds from a bin at the grocery store.  I just randomly pick one and haven't really decided on a favorite.  I grind them up in the morning, pass hot water through them, and then drink the hot water.

It is coffee to me.  Maybe I don't have the correct respect for coffee.  Maybe I have acquired the desire to the extent that the taste does not matter as long as the desired affect is achieved.

I don't know.  It is just coffee.  And I drink it black.

Do you mix flavor and sugar into your coffee too?

Some folks are just coffee drinkers, and some are true affectionados. Coffee is much like beer or wine. Some drink it just for the effect, and some for the actual flavor.

Coffees are very different one from the other. A lot depends on the climate where it is raised. elevation above sea level, moisture, temperature. Also a lot depends on the separation techniques. After bean harvest, many quality growers wikk separate out the beans that have the best essences. Like with the Jamaican Blue Mountain, they float the beans. I don't know which they keep, but some float and some sink. They designate different qualities of the beans. Similarly the way it is roasted imparts flavor to the bean. Lighter roasting gives a milder tasting coffee. Heavier roasting a stronger flavor. You can take a sample of beans that are identical, give them to 2 different roasters and get 2 entirely different flavors out of it.

Flavor also depends on how long after you grind the coffee that you brew it. Most of the coffee from the store tastes stale to me. If you ever have a chance to tast freshly roasted and freshly gound coffee you will see a big difference.

I got a taste for jamaican coffee when I was traveling to Ocho Rios several times a year back in the 80's. If you really like the Jamaican Blue Mountain try the brand Jablum. Very mellow and rich and no acid aftertaste. I have also had Wellenford but it is much harder to find and more expensive. One of the nurse's I work with is from St Marys parish on the north coast and when she travels home twice a year I give her money to bring me back a pound or two.

One thing I do like at Starbucks is their frozen coffee drinks. But that ends up being more like a milk shake than coffee.
I'll check into the Jablum and Wallenford Jamaican as I have heard about both before in a positive way.

Coffee conniseurs can be just as nuts a extreme overclockers. Probably more so.  As rcranfield said, coffees taste different depending on climate, soil type, altitude, how they are processed after picking, how long they are roasted etc. These differences in taste are lost on 99% of the human population because the subtle overtones and undertones begin to quickly fade after roasting. About 2 weeks after roasting most of the delicate flavor notes will have dissipated. Grocery store coffees, well, ain't quite that fresh. Like wine, really fresh coffee can have very subtle fruit flavors, jasmine, chocolate, etc., all influenced by where they are grown and how they are handled. There aren't many true coffee conniseurs around. To join the tiny elite club of true conniseurs (ie: fruitcakes) you need to buy a home coffee roaster, buy your own green coffee beans and roast them yourself. About 24 hours after roasting, stored in a container with holes in the lid so carbon monoxide can dissipate, the smell coming off those beans will make you realize how stale most mass produced coffees really are. The beans will be wet in appearance because the flavor giving oils have not yet dissipated. Brewing is equally important. For maximum flavor coffee should be brewed at around 200 degrees F for approximately 6 minutes. There are only two consumer grade coffee makers that accomplish this that I know of. The Technivorms and the Newco OCS series. The rest are just cheap appliances with a few bells and whisles thrown in. Other than that, french press brewing is probably the best way to do it. Just more of a hassle. A good website for coffee freaks is sweetmarias.com.  They've got an excellent selection of brewing and roasting equipment as well as an awesome selection of green coffee beans, individually cupped (tasted) and hand selected from coffee farms around the world.

Some folks are just coffee drinkers, and some are true affectionados. Coffee is much like beer or wine. Some drink it just for the effect, and some for the actual flavor.

I drink it for the health benefits
