With ASUS and MSI already releasing BIOS with new 0x129 microcode update, I wonder if Chris from EVGA support can give us some update when they plan to provide BIOS with 0x129 microcode? Since it is only new microcode from Intel to add to existing ones, should be trivial task to do it.

This person on TPU published a DIY microcode patcher for people to do it on platforms which aren't being updated.  They made it specifically for mobile/laptop OEMs who abandoned updates.  It may or may not work for this purpose, but I suppose the worst you could do is ask them.

Can't you just limit Voltage to  1.55V? = max safe Voltage

Raptor Lake microcode limits Intel chips to a mere 1.55 volts to prevent CPU destruction

No, we want new BIOS with latest Intel microcode, which is proper solution. If it would be that easy, then Intel would just give out instructions to limit that voltage in BIOS.

https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/Microcode-0x129-Update-for-Intel-Core-13th-and-14th-Gen-Desktop/m-p/1622129

Intel is currently distributing to its OEM/ODM partners a new microcode patch (0x129) for its Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors which will address incorrect voltage requests to the processor that are causing elevated operating voltage.

For all Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processor users: This patch is being distributed via BIOS update and will not be available through operating system updates. Intel is working with its partners to ensure timely validation and rollout of the BIOS update for systems currently in service.

Instability Analysis Update – Microcode Background and Performance Implications

In addition to extended warranty coverage, Intel has released three mitigations related to the instability issue – commonly experienced as consistent application crashes and repeated hangs – to help stabilize customer systems with Intel Core 13th and 14th gen desktop processors:
1. Intel default settings to avoid elevated power delivery impact to the processor (May 2024)
2. Microcode 0x125 to fix the eTVB issue in i9 processors (June 2024)
3. Microcode 0x129 to address elevated voltages (August 2024)

On my z690 dark kingpin running a cinebench r23 multicore test the vcore maxes out at 1.376v on my 13900k. Doing a single core test it went to 1.382v. Idling just on the desktop the vcore is at 1.35v. This is with the board at default settings as well. I've never seen the vcore go above 1.382v during gaming or stress testing.

tbh i think evga designed a good bios that doesnt cook your cpu. my voltage doesnt go over 1.45 unless i explicitly need it to.

We need some word from EVGA support on this. I bet Intel already send them new 0x129 microcode and it is Intel best interest for vendors who are using their socket and chipset to update their BIOSes.

Probably the ones who did 14th gen support.

I thought I read another thread where someone said the whole mobo team left when kingpin left and that's why we never got a new non beta bios since
My mistake if that was misinformation. I'm definately hoping bios support for my $800 mobo exists

Kingpin and his mobo team left before latest BETA BIOS for Z790 series with 14th gen support was made available, so I asume they have someone else for BIOS maintanance.

I had to use the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to set the ICCMAX cap for my Z790 Classified motherboard, as there was no BIOS setting for it.

There are already 2 threads on this - one under Z790, and one under Hardware. Stop creating new threads for the same topic, it's making it difficult to follow.

Many threads talking about Z790 & updates .... however; each of these talks to a very specific topic ..... though some seem to have moved towards microcode & keep evolving

Re: BIOS with 0x129 microcode fix for Intel 13th & 14th gen. So we won’t fry our CPUs 2024/08/16 10:02:10 (permalink)
I agree they're connected to microcode, I have a Z690 KP and need the microcode as well (nothing posted there).  My question is related to this topic, if my board is still under warranty and continues to crash then it would warrant an RMA request for the MB and/or processor.  Intel has stated that the processor maybe an issue and requires these new microcodes in the BIOS to prevent killing the processor.  My BIOS has 0x119 microcode as the most recent and there are several others released to address this issue.  The BIOS programming is locked down to MB manufacturers for MB warranty reasons. And if EVGA doesn't release a BIOS update with the new microcode then wouldn't EVGA be responsible for replacing the board AND the processor?

At some point EVGA will need to do something, the cost of someone putting the microcode into a new BIOS vs RMAing boards and/or processors vs lawsuits (several firms already going for Intel).  If it's too costly for an update then refund the board so I can get one that will be supported.

Intel might send you CPU back which already includes latest microcode.
I’m sure they fixed current production, but I could be wrong.
I also suggest you contact EVGA support regarding new BIOS with latest Intel microcode. The more pressure on them, the better!

How do you know? Have you tried what I wrote above and see the results for yourself? If your cpu is already degraded then it wont work but if your cpu is new it will work fine. I am on my 2nd 13900KS as I left my first one at stock and it degraded on me after a year, and I had to rma it with Intel, and I have had these settings applied with my now 2nd 13900KS since day one that I got it, and have had no problems at all with my cpu. My chip runs cooler and is even a bit faster, or same speed as stock as it is not a huge differance. I do not think you know what you are talking about as I have applied these setting myself and seen the results myself from before with stock, and after with the settings applied, and it worked fine, and has been ever since day 1 of getting the cpu brand new!

Yes it is and many people have proven and demonstrated it. It's not a hack to set safe voltage, current and watt limit specified by Intel.

You do not need the micro code update. Just tune your cpu yourself, unless your cpu has degraded then send it in to Intel and get a new one, and then tune the new one when you get it right away! This is what I did to tune mine.

1. You need to turn off "Core Isolation" if you have Windows 11, not sure about Windows 10 as it will override any voltage settings you set in the bios for the Vcore, and offset. You can do this by typing in "Core Isolation" into the search bar in Windows 11 and it should pull it up.

2. Go into bios and turn XMP on.

3. If you have a 13900KS like I do for example; you need to lock all the cores to 56 (5.6 GHZ). You want to lock the cores to whatever speed that the bios is showing for the cores that do not run the highest, so 2 of the cores for example on a 13900KS are designed to run at 60 (6.0 GHZ), and the all the other cores are made to run at 56 (5.6 GHZ), so 56 is the real speed of the CPU, so you want to lock all the cores to run at 56 (5.6 GHZ) on a 13900KS.

4. Set the Vcore to 'adaptive" setting and set a 1.345v with a -25 to -100 offset below. You will have to play around with this as each CPU sweet spot might be different. In my case I set a 1.345v with a -95 offset and the "vid" only reaches a high of 1.38 which is perfect as you want to keep the voltage below 1.35v.

5. Set the Vcore PWM Frequency from 500 to 400.

6. Set the CPU Power Limit to 253 watts. In EVGA motherboards case Pl1=pl2 so it will set 253 for both and 253 is Intel spec. The CPU doesn't need any more wattage than that.

7. Save changes and Reset

8. Run "HardWare Monitor" and keep any eye on the voltage and temps as you run a benchmark program like "Cinebench" at the same time. Then go back into the bios and make adjustments to the Vcore voltage as needed until you find the sweet spot for your CPU.

Hope this helped!

Short of a new BIOS w/ microcode update, those steps should help keep people from burning the CPU to the ground
