LR, darkinfero
anymore info on -smp 8 and more mem? I think im gona put 3 more gigs in with the 6 I have after this one is complete (tomorrow sometime pm)
please post your finidngs: performance if any when adding more mem allocation
Thanx Tasmac

with 6 gigs changed my VM allocation to 4600 and moved to smp 8....... shaved off 1.5 minutes
I'm at 3.8 and also running 2x - 295s
I would not mess with it untill the bigadv starts over or you run the risk of running out of memory and losing the WU

Im running 8gigs ( 7gigs set to VMware will lower to 6gigs  after this wu finishes) and task manager shows 5.43gb of mem being used that is with -bigadv -smp 7. With the processor at 3.9GHz and mem running at 1950MHz I get around 10644 PPD on the bigadv.

I only have my Windows system on part of the time. I have been sticking to the 1920 pt units in Windows because of that. I am still folding bigadv in native Linux.

One interesting thing about VMWare is that when you allocate more than 3600MB of memory, the amount of memory available in Linux ends up being less than what is allocated to the virtual machine. For example, if you allocate 5000MB then 4340MB is available to Linux.

You can check available memory in Linux with this command:

free

To see memory available while folding, hit ALT+F2 and login again to run the above command. ALT+F1 brings you back to the console that is folding.

Well I still seem to be having timeshift issues.

I am going to try a new VM and start from scratch

You can try a sync of the hardware clock to the virtual machine system clock every so often.

ALT+F2 - Login
while true; do hwclock --hctosys; echo -n .; sleep 3600; done

where 3600 is the number of seconds to wait between each sync. The number of seconds can be adjusted as necessary. In a future version I may look into adding the clock sync as a cron job where the sync happens automatically on a specific time interval.

Man LR this thing is great. I have got 2 of these big bad boys done and the two together are what my points for a week usually were for the whole rig. I am going to double my ppd output running these. 13-14k to around 26-27k, maybe even better than that. After switching gpu drivers and giving this thing some more memory it is moving right along and doesn't have any issues.

Only question I got now is can this thing be reliably shutdown and restarted? Cause I need to restart for updates and a few other new programs I have installed in the last few days.

Shutting down or restarting (copied and pasted from LRs 1st post page 1)

To shutdown the virtual machine, run this command:

shutdown -h now

To reboot the virtual machine, run this command:

reboot

The only time I lost anything was when I ran out of memory farting around with mem allotment

Yea I know how to shut it down but every time I tried before it corrupted the work unit. I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue or was it just something on my end? If others have reliably shut these down and resumed and had no issues that is what I was wondering. I guess if I catch the next wu after it finishes I will just restart then. I'm to big of a chicken lol.

hehe................only time I have had balls enough to shut it was also after finishing.

LR has forgotten more about Linux than I know....Dos 2.0 baby!

there is a backup/restore method that I haven't tried...can't remember if it was in the old forum?

but hey I copy and paste well

I shut mine down as needed, I just copy the folding folder (mine is FAH) from the Home folder, complete, to the desktop (do this while it is folding).

Then I do what ever I need, update Linux, shut down etc.  When you start up just do the regular, if it has a problem says it is corrupt and starts to send it back, stop before it can finish, delete, copy and paste the copy on the workbench.

You can do this as often as necessary until it works, if it takes more than one or two try's however, exit the terminal, go to ... System/Administration/System Monitor - find FAhCore_a2.exe (could be 4 to 8 depending) and if it says anything except "sleeping" right click and select Kill Process (all FahCore's should all be shut down when you close the terminal)

When all the FahCore's are gone restart the the terminal after you copy and paste in a clean copy of FAH folder from the desktop to the Home Folder, and it should work no problem.

I have done Linux folding with Ubuntu and VMware for 4 years now, and following this process has saved me lots of aggravation and many a WU.

Glad to hear you got a couple big units completed. :)

Check out my post #49. I put a few commands there on how to backup up the work folder before exiting the folding app. This way you can try starting up the folding client after reboot and if you get an error, you can copy the backup work folder back in place. I still have to test this out myself but I believe all the relevant data is located in the work directory.

Try this command:

rm work/*

Then startup the folding client again.

LR or somebody....dumb question.

in pushing an overclock today (X58Classified) had a bsod

restarted and adjusted....came back up and was not corrupted, but have a question.

I am assuming you don't have to reconfigure as far as using the Web interface, because we shut that service down to conserve memory (/etc/rc.d/rc.httpd stop; chmod 644 /etc/rc.d/rc.httpd) although it shows an IP its not accessible through the web, but it will ping going out (google.com)......is it good to go from that point?

I shut down the VM alot with zero trouble. I do Ctrl+C, wait for it to close or whatever its doing then I do the shutdown command. No problems yet.

Ok, I just tried to set this up and it seems to be stuck at the following:

Does that mean I did something wrong, or just that I am not able to get a bigadv work unit yet?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Be patient it is slow, it is not as fast as the standard SMP client. Keep in mind these WU are alot bigger in size and take longer to download and process and consequently retransmitt back to stanford.

So far everything looks normal. Like Horvat said, downloading a bigadv unit can be slow going. It sometimes takes a good 20 minutes before I get a bigadv work unit up and running whether in VM or native.

Be patient it is slow, it is not as fast as the standard SMP client. Keep in mind these WU are alot bigger in size and take longer to download and process and consequently retransmitt back to stanford.

I did leave it up and I do see that it finally started up.  It is at 1% now.  When I view it in FahMon, and go to Benchmarks, the project (2683) does not show up.  Does that also take time?  Or, am I missing something?

So far I have 9939 MB of memory free and my max core temps are 75/73/71/69.  So, it seems to be working ok (so far).

tell me about it, i had to get a brown paper bag out and start breathing into it so i didn't pass out

LOL.  You gave me a good laugh there, which was definitely needed after this week of dealing with various folding issues.

It will take till 3% completed before Fahmon can start displaying stats on it. Give it at least 2 hours, then highlight the client in the Fahmon screen, click on tools on the tool bar in Fahmon and then click on Benchmarks. If your average time is less than 45 minutes per frame you're in like Flint.

that is why HFM is better, i don't have to wait 2 hours, i would see it in less than 1 minutes after the client start.
