Anyone ever ran into a problem were fahmon will not see the fah folder when you know your putting in the correct IP?
Was working fine, I just did a clean install of W7 64bit & now it will no longer monitor in fahmon.
I've looked around as much as I know how, but can't seen to put my finger on what is causing this problem.
f@H client is running fine, just no way to monitor the PPD or get to the files txt to have a look at them..

Have you tried going to "tools" and select "download new projects"

Yes, but that is not my problem.
FAHmon can not find the VM fah folder to get the PPD info from the fah VM client threw the IP it show as VM boots.
192.168.1.110\fah
Edit: btw this is the lastest 4v I'm using posted on the main post.
Using it on other rigs & it working fine with them, just not with this new install of the OS.
Working fine with OS W764bit & XP on other rigs.
Its kind of like the folder is hiden or the network connection to it is not there.
I have also tried a new DL & install of Linux FAH Image v0.4  & VMplayer, was no help to fix the problem.

I noticed you have your path set to 192.168.1.110\fah    use\\in front ie: \\192.168.1.110\fah

Thanks you!

Don't know how I kept missing that as many time as I have set this up.
That was my problem. Just a over site.

Glad you are up and running

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it all...and then some you don't want.

So I have been having a problem with dates saying that the WU's were downloaded some time back so it wont give me the full 5*,*** points I normally get with the bigadv thing is this only happens when I don't fold continuously letting me think that the WU's are actually old but by using the rm queue.dat unitinfo.txt work/* does not solve this on the current one is only at 8% but HFM.net states its worth only 25,403. Another thing is after they finish I normally just suspend the VMware instead of shutting it down could that be the problem? Just in case I do have timesync on but I think they are old WU's because the last one that reported lower points in HFM actually got about 48,***

EDIT:

by looking at the log in HFM it says [13:15:27] Working on queue slot 01 [December 17 13:15:27 UTC] leading me to belive its actually a  time problem its on the correct time, but wrong date since today is the 20 instead of the 17. I'll let this one finish but if I only get 25k I'll be mad LoL

After you start up the VM again from suspension, run this command:

hwclock --hctosys

followed by:

Check to make sure that the time on the virtual machine matches the time of the Windows system using the above command.

Thanks I'll check that out in a couple of days after this one finishes or risk a ctrl + c and venture if it will restart on the same spot.

It might have to do with a lock file being in place. Take a look at this link:

is their an idiots guide to the backup scripts for the DOS 2.0 People?

Once I move the files in the VM directory and run the files via the vm window....I get file not recognized.

It was late and I was pissed.....lost a 92% -bigadv because of brown power (and because I'm an idiot without and APC)

The batch files creates the 24 directories.....I am pretty much FUBAR from there

Hello,
I've tried installing the back up script as shown in this thread, it seemed to start folding fine then put this message up, is it OK or an error?  If an error how do I fix it. (complete linux novice)

completed blah blah 0%
crond [1102]: USER root pid 1145 cmd cp -a /usr/local/fah/work /usr/local/fah/queue.dat  /usr/local/fah/unitinfo.txt /mnt/winshare/21 >/dev/null 2>&1

crond [1102] USER root pid 1157 cmd hwclock --hctosys >/dev/null 2>1&

just passed 1% so I guess it's folding ok, but is it backing up OK

Also, I now can't adjust the memory size, it's greyed out at 3600M with no way to change it  ( I believe that is too small for a bigadv)

Those are not errors.  Those are messages from the cron process doing the scheduled tasks.  The first one is the hourly backup to folder 21.  The second is a time sync.  So, that means it is working.

If you are using -smp 7 flag, then 3600M should be enough.  That is what I am using and it works well.  I think you need to add memory for -smp 7, but I have only 6 gigs of ram, so I am sticking to -smp 7.  If you don't know, this prompt needs to be edited in the start_folding.sh file.

As for changing the memory, I am not sure, but suspect you cannot change it while the VM is running.

It's definately not writing to my backup folder.
My backup folder is c/FAH Backup   should my WIN_SHARE_LOCATION be "c/FAH Backup" or c\FAH Backup"?  I'm assuming that's where the problem lies.    The crond texts' are telling me it's writing to a numerical (21,22,23) destination, but it's not getting to the correct destination.

your WIN_SHARE_LOCATION is wrong.  It needs to be //computer_name/share_name

For example, my computer name is JASON-DESKTOP and the share name is FAH_Backup as used in the example.  So, my WIN_SHARE_LOCATION is //JASON-DESKTOP/FAH_Backup.

Your Virtual Machine is talking to your desktop via your network.  So, you cannot give it a directory path.  It has to be a network share path.

Also, once you run start_folding.sh, you can press Alt+F2 to open another console and log in.  From there you can type "cd /mnt/winshare"  and then type "ls".  If you don't see the 24 folders then something is not right.

Did you put the ./ in front of the commands? For example:

Hello!

I'm trying to get the backup scripts to work, but when I go into the networked computers, the FAH VM doesn't show up--just my desktop and laptop. Does this have something to do with the VMWare network connections being listed as public instead of home/work? I've tried to make them home instead of public, but haven't had any success...I'm coming back to Windows from using OS X for the past few years and am not up on this...

Thank you!

From the 'run' menu of Windows you can type \\<VM ip address> if the VM isn't showing up on your network.  Windows can be a bit stubborn when it comes to discovering networked machines.  If it ever does show up I recommend mapping that shared directory to make it easier to find it next time.

Also make sure that you setup the virtual machine instance to be in "NAT mode" in the network settings.  That should make it much easier to find on your network.

The scripts like Jason stated are looking for a valid network location.  The scripts setup a bunch of folders under the VM /mnt directory so that when the backup jobs write to them the files are redirected over the network to the shared directory on your host PC.

My win_share _location is "//my-pc/FAH Backup"   and it's still not backing up.
FAH Backup is on the C drive, visible as soon as you open it.    Do I need an underscore in the FAH Backup?  ie FAH_Backup (if so, do I need to change the folder name to match?

I tried Alt+F2 and it seemed to open another console in the same window, but how do I get back to the folding one?  I don't want to hit the wrong button and lose another wu.

I typed in what you said and nothing happened. I take it that was a lower case L> l ?

It came back with mnt/winshare#

Run the command mount. If all went well with the mounting process there should be a listing there that says //my-pc/FAH Backup is mounted to /mnt/winshare. If you do not see a mount entry for /mnt/winshare, try mounting manually and see what happens:

mount -t cifs "//my-pc/FAH Backup" -o username=$WIN_USER_NAME,password=$WIN_PASSWORD,rw /mnt/winshare

Replace the username and password with the correct credentials.

ALT+F1 takes you back to the folding window.

Re:VMWare 3.0 && bigadv folding (Image available for testing) 2009/12/22 12:04:13 (permalink)
noob question about -bigadv for you guys.  Right now my stock Q9550 is consistently 3 days ahead of schedule for delivery using the notfred/VMware folding solution.  Can a 2.83ghz quad core pull of a -bigadv within its deadline, or is this thread more aimed towards i7 owners?   Right now, my CPU is pushing ~4500 pdd on 1950pt projects and I can easily OC to 3.0ghz while air-cooling, and since my motion graphics/animation work's been slow, my main machine's been folding 24/7.

I wasn't quick to subscribe to the new i7 series chips with the i9's and the GTX 300 series just around the corner (and possibly, yet another socket type).

Here's what FahMon says about my notfred setup:

 Min. Time / Frame : 5mn 52s  - 4712.73 ppd
 Avg. Time / Frame : 5mn 53s  - 4699.38 ppd
 Cur. Time / Frame : 6mn 24s  - 4320.00 ppd
 R3F. Time / Frame : 6mn 29s  - 4264.47 ppd
 Eff. Time / Frame : 6mn 14s  - 4435.51 ppd

Is the "just do it" method the best way to test if my machine scrape by the deadline?  Perhaps you guys can shed some insight as to how process/time critical these -bigadv units really are.  Thanks!

I don't think the bigadv work units will download unless you have -smp 7 (or more cores).  You can setup VMplayer for more VM cores than present on your hardware but you'll probably find that the Windows scheduler will thrash like mad and you'll have a hard time meeting deadlines.  An i7 920 running at 4GHz with HT enabled will complete a bigadv work unit in around 2.1-2.2 days if it's folding non-stop.

your WIN_SHARE_LOCATION is wrong.

While testing you can manually copy the /work, queue.dat, info.... whatever it's called file (I'm out of the country and don't have my machine handy to check).  Do the copy before you shut down the folding core so that if you have to shut the core down or restart the VM you'll have a snapshot of the files before doing so.  With Linux I *always* recommend using underscores instead of spaces for directory names.  Unfortunately Windows over the years has let users get away with spaces in file names which has caused problems with old programs and other operating systems.

I eventually got this error

CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation
CIFS VFS? cifs_mount failed w/return code = -110

I hedged my bets and set up another shared backup folder with an underscore in the name, but it hasn't written to either of them.

Have you performed the registry hacks on the Windows side?  I was getting a -12 when I left Windows alone and needed to work around a bug.  According to this link a -110 is a timeout:  http://mail.linux.ie/pipe...007-August/094383.html

Make sure you can see the host from the VM since if that fails then that means there is no connectivity from the VM to the host and as a result the backup directories will fail to mount.  If you haven't enabled NAT in the VM settings then I wouldn't be surprised if this fails....

Yes, I did the registry hacks and they saved OK.

"make sure you can see the host from the VM" how do I do that? (what is the host?)

I tried enabling NATS but then I couldn't see \\ FAH\fah , it disappeared, so I switched it back.

From the VM ping your Windows host using "ping <ip address>"  if you don't know what the IP address is run 'ipconfig' from the Windows command prompt.  Some users are finding that they can't find \\FAH\fah from the host unless they enable NAT.
