That sucks, can you recommend some sever cpu's that can put out between 10k to 50k+ PPDs.

Thanks!

just a random Q:

what projects are you guys getting? as of now i am only getting p2683's

I think that's what I was seeing before I took off on vacation as well.  I found that they were slightly slower than the other one (2681?)

From the VM ping your Windows host using "ping <ip address>"  if you don't know what the IP address is run 'ipconfig' from the Windows command prompt.  Some users are finding that they can't find \\FAH\fah from the host unless they enable NAT.

I've just tried pinging and it's repeating the same line over  and over
"64 bytes from ip blah blah.......time = 0.8ms" for example

How do I stop it, it's currently at 400+ and just continuing

A dual xeon 5520 setup (8 cores/16 virtual cores) is supposed to get around 27-30k PPD folding across 15/16 virtual cores.  An overclocked i7 desktop part gets close to that too for much less money so in terms of $/PPD a bunch of overclocked i7 machines is the best bang for the buck.  There are some folks folding on 4P quads who get even more points but a 16 physical core machine costs quite a bit of money and power.

Also if you have a firewall at work like me and manage to figure out how to get the client to work with it let me know since I gave up.  My work machine is a P.O.S. Dell C2D so it's not too much of a big deal for me anyway.  lol any chance I get to say Dell are crap I take it :)  Now if only they would let me fold on our build farms at work...... I'm sure 500k PPD would raise some eyebrows :)

Ctrl + C (just like how you kill anything on Linux)  Sounds like your host is visible to the VM.

OK, I stopped it.   Google is my friend.

On my start bar (win 7 pro)  if I click start then press \  it comes up with a list of folders/files.  I assume this is all my shared folders?  It shows file://fah/fah/ and FAH Backup but not FAH_Backup (despite the same properties for both folders)

In Vmware if I enter d on the root@FAH line it lists all the files and folders from FAH\fah
If I then enter cd /mnt and d  it shows me a folder called winshare
if I enter cd /mnt/winshare I get nothing so I assume that folder is empty.      Is that a real folder in windows or linux,  or a virtual folder

Is that a real folder in windows or linux,  or a virtual folder

It depends on whether or not the Windows share is mounted in Linux. The way to tell is to run this command:

mount

If the Windows share is mounted, it will look something like this:

//my-pc/FAH Backup on /mnt/winshare type cifs (rw,mand)

Re:VMWare 3.0 && bigadv folding (Image available for testing) 2009/12/23 12:50:36 (permalink)
The \ from the start menu is probably just the history of various locations you have visited in the past.  \\FAH\fah should bring you to the VM shared directory and \\<WIN_HOST_NAME>\<SHARED_DIRECTORY_PATH would bring you to your Windows shared directory.

Since you do not see directories \0, \1, \2, etc... that means one of two things:

1)  The mount to your windows shared drive is not working
2)  The windows batch script was not run which creates all those directories.

The location '/mnt/winshare' is just a mount point that should map over to the Windows shared directory.  So if the mount worked you should be able to put files/folders into your windows shared directory and then the VM would see them under /mnt/winshare.  Likewise if you copy a file from within the VM to the /mnt/winshare directory you should see it in the Windows shared folder as well if the mount is working.

Make sure you have setup a Windows user name and password and added that user to the shared folder permissions on the Windows host with write access at a minimum.  If the VM doesn't have permission to mount that location over the network then it will fail.  Also when you run ./start_folding or manually try to create a mount point are you seeing any messages coming back?

I'm guessing it's option 1 as I ran the batch file in both folders and have folders 0-23 and rambackup in both.

I didn't notice any messages bar the cron ones for trying to save the files and sync the clock?

When you say windows shared directory,  do you mean the 'shared folder'  I think it was called that I used to have in XP?  In win7 I can't find it, there is one called public, is that the same?

Yep when I say 'folder' and 'directory' I'm talking about the same thing.  The windows shared directory I'm talking about is the one that contains the /0, /1, ... /23 directories.  Before you mount it from the VM it must be shared by right clicking the directory and turning on network sharing.  The 'public' share I think is just a folder that is available by all the users on your machine and not the network itself.  So if you didn't explicitly share the backup folder on the network then that would be the problem.

I've checked the folder and as far as I can tell network sharing is enabled.

Re:VMWare 3.0 && bigadv folding (Image available for testing) 2009/12/24 15:10:24 (permalink)
The easiest way to find out if it is shared properly is to browse your network and make sure you can access the shared folder from the host PC.  If you can do that and modify a file then it should be all set properly.  Even though you are accessing a local directory on your machine it'll be accessed through the network layer (although Windows is smart enough to not use the network to access it..... I'm too hammered to explain this though :)).

By the way are you the same person who emailed me asking me questions a couple days ago?  I assumed you were so I might have left some information out as a result.

No it wasn't me that emailed you.

If in windows 7 I click on computer and then network   it shows 2 computer Icons. My-pc and FAH.
If I click on my-pc it shows folders FAH Backup, FAH_Backup and Users.
If I click on FAH it shows the VMware FAH folder with all the folding stuff in it.

I can access and alter (if I wanted) any of those folders/files.

I have 2 i7's folding -bigadv and after the first one got credit for the points and bonus it just sat there with no progress. The other one also did the same and this is while I ran them overnight. In a span of 18-20 hours the progress never moved past 0% on both rigs. Never had this problem before. I've deleted and reinstalled VMWares and images and it would still do the same. Appreciate the help folks.

Try running these commands on each one:

rm /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd.duid
reboot

There is a backup rar file made by the TheCrazyCanuck in the guide that you can download. It includes instructions to setup. This method copies the data to the Windows system. The bigadv units take up quite a bit of space and there is only limited room in the virtual machine so backing up to the Windows system is the most ideal.

Otherwise I have a very simple script called fahbackup that copies the queue.dat and work directory contents to a folder called backup that you can run from the command line if you want a quick backup. It removes and creates a new backup everytime you run it. You could potentially run it as a cronjob.

As far as a torrent goes, I will look into setting one up.

I am currently trying to automate the start of FAH client as much as possible, ideally have it auto-start on boot. I can put the shortcut to VM into startup folder and it will run. Inside Linux I can also auto-run a shell script. However, the problem is the login prompt. Did you consider adding mingetty as a login handler? This way, there would be an option to set up auto-login, for the environments where security is not a problem. (Host PC is firewalled anyway).

Mingetty is available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingetty/

Setup manual (very straightforward) here: http://blogs.koolwal.net/...in-linux-console-mode/

What do you think?

I would do it myself, but you stripped make out of that image :D

I think I've finally sorted this while searching for something totally different.

I noticed post 272 in this thread by jasonanderson   and tried using my ip adress instead of my-pc and it's worked.  It's saved the work folder, queue.dat and unitinfo in my back up folder number 16 at 4pm.  (I must have missed this post the first time around)

Thanks for all your help at trying to sort my problem out guys.

I have been working on an updated image with an auto-startup feature that can be turned on via the web configuration page.

Edit: I updated the guide with the new image. I also built and added mingetty to /sbin. I did not enable it in inittab yet though since I have not had much chance to try it out yet.

quick question about backup:

My router doesn't seem to want to play well with the VMshare

I have backed up and restored through windows successfully several times using just standard file copy

Is this just luck? fluke? task amnager does a file copy every 2 hours and and rewrites the next day

Only problem is I that I have ran into was sometimes having to change the IP address (if it is conflicting), but used the "ifconfig" method and seems to work fine.

Is the network connection in VMware setup as bridged? This should be the default.

Also, is there a firewall installed other than Windows firewall? Sometimes firewalls cause issues with connecting to VM share.

As for the IP address conflict, are you running the VMware on multiple systems? If so, there is a file that should be removed that I forgot to remove from the image:

rm /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd.duid
reboot

Is it possible to scroll through the text in the vmware window?   For example if I lose a bidadv at say 95% when I'm at work, I won't know if it's failed until the points don't come in.

Shift+Page Up should do it.

You can also view the log through a program like FahMon.
