LOL@ barnhart. That was a much needed laugh. Well I lost another wu today. The girl friend thought restarting the rig was a good call. But she did it about an hour after I went to work this morning. Then she proceeded to not allow precision to come on when the rig came back up. So the GPU baked all day with 40% fan. I seen 82 when I finally got the fan on. I was 23% in on my -bigadv. When it tried to restart it said the file could not be read/verified IIRC. Then it started over. So the woman took a good chewing and knows now not to restart the rig EVER lol. But I was having some bad issues the last few days and it seemed the memory use was at 100%. Even with no -bigadv running it would use 60+%/ So after further investigating some media player process was killing my memory and making the machine almost unusable. Shut the process off in the services list and now I am only using about 80-82%. Machine is alot more responsive now.

I added a section into the guide for increasing the resolution in the virtual machine. Default is 1024x768. For those with high resolution monitors, there is a boot option to set a higher resolution for the virtual machine so that you can see more info at once.

Horvat It will take till 3% completed before Fahmon can start displaying stats on it. Give it at least 2 hours, then highlight the client in the Fahmon screen, click on tools on the tool bar in Fahmon and then click on Benchmarks. If your average time is less than 45 minutes per frame you're in like Flint. Ok, checked on it this morning and it is at 16% and TPF is 39 minutes and 1 second. So, sounds like I am doing ok. Does that sound like a good number considering my OC at 3.78 GHz? I do have two GPU clients running with WinAFC (per Horvat's guide). For the VMware one, I used -bigadv -smp 7 wb488641 that is why HFM is better, i don't have to wait 2 hours, i would see it in less than 1 minutes after the client start. WB I had not see HFM, but I found the info in the stickies and installed it. I will have to play with it some. Thanks Now, I read in this forum thread some discussion about backing up the work folder. I went to access the fah folder via \\ip\fah\ and I can readily access the log files, etc. But, if I try to go into the work folder I get a permission denied. Do I need to change permissions in Linux for that folder?

I already have enabled network discovery and file sharing. I can view the VM's fah folder without problem. But, if I right-click on the work folder, there is no sharing tab. I do have file sharing setup as password protected sharing. Maybe that is the issue? I do see in Linux that the work folder has no permissions set for everyone. I could change the permissions but don't want to screw anything up.

I am with you on not wanting to have to babysit it. But, in the thread it sounds like some have had issues with lost work units. I would hate to get far along and lose the work due to having to stop the client for some reason and it not start back up where it left off. My tpf is still at 39. Are you using -smp 7 or 8?

So, if I had to restore I would not be able to. So, I changed the find statement to this: find . -type f -perm 644 -exec chmod 666 {} \; This gave read and write access to everyone and I believe would allow me to overwrite the work folder if needed. I am not going to test it now as I am at 32% and do not want to jinx it.

I would backup before exiting the folding client.

I just got home from work to find that my first -bigadv project had finished! It finished at 2:30 pm Eastern time and did not show with the 3pm update on folding.extremeoverclocking.com. In HFM.NET when I look at the benchmarks for the completed project it shows average TPF of 38:41. Is that what I should use for the bonus points calculator? If that is correct, then I should be seeing 53,690 points soon! I want to thank LR for a great guide to get this setup and all those that helped me get my first project finished.

barnhartmd051977 I dont understand how to back up the work folder I have already lost one that was at 30%+ and I am now at 80%+ so i would like to backup at some point!!! Hi, I will try to explain what worked for me. First, are you monitoring with either FahMon or HFM.NET? If so, in either one, double-click on the row in the monitor for the bigadv folding. That should open the directory from the VM where the log files are. If you are not using either then in a Explorer window, type \\ip\fah where ip is the ip address assigned to your VM. Now, in the folder is a work folder. Try to double-click on it to go into it. If you can see the contents of the work folder then you are better off than me. If you are able to navigate to it, skip the next section about permissions. If you get access denied to the work folder, you probably are encountering the same issue I had. Here is how I handled this. First, in the VMware window, click the mouse to have your keyboard control in the VM. You might need to hit enter to wake the screen up. Now, press Ctrl-Z. This temporarily stops the folding process. Then type the following commands: chmod 755 work find . -type f -perm 750 -exec chmod 755 {} \; find . -type f -perm 644 -exec chmod 666 {} \; Now, type fg and press enter. This should bring your folding process back into the foreground and running again. Simultaneously press Ctrl and Alt to get your mouse back. End of Permissions part Now to backing it up. Now, hopefully you can access the work folder. If so, I created a backup folder and I just copied the entire work folder, queue.dat and unitinfo.txt to that new folder as my backup. Note, that you might get a permission denied on a log file. I think it is created on the fly sometimes and might not copy. But, I just ignored it as I felt it was not likely key. I copy these while it is still folding. If I want to gracefully stop the VM folding, I click into the VM window and press Ctrl-C to stop it. I get the Linux prompt and wait a few moments for some messages that show the cores stopped. I then type shutdown -h now and wait for the VM to shut down and the window to close on its own. Now, I can reboot, game, or whatever. When I restart the VM and type ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 7 it should pick up where it left off. It will take a bit to get back to the point of showing percentages. If it fails, I would stop the folding, leave the VM open, copy the files from the backup and then start the folding again. I hope this helps. If you are lucky you can skip all the tricky permission stuff. I think that is because I have password sharing enabled on my machine. If you have any questions let me know. And, to the experts, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks anyway Sorry I am just lazy I probably made it sound harder than it is. To clear one thing up. The Linux command part is only necessary once. You should at least see if you can get into the work folder and, if so, then it is just a matter of copying files to do a backup. If not, the command part is only a one time deal. Also, I recommend doing the Ctrl-C and shutdown stuff rather than just closing the VM window, but others may disagree.

I have a new version of the image that will allow full read and write access to the fah folder via the network. I hope to have it uploaded soon. The image has some other fixes and additions as well. To enable write access to the fah share for existing VM images, I have an update configuration file for Samba. cd /etc/samba mv smb.conf smb.conf.old wget http://www.linuxforge.net/fah/smb.conf cd /usr/local/fah

jasonanderson I just got home from work to find that my first -bigadv project had finished! Congrats on finishing a bigadv unit. :) You can put the average in the calculator and it should give you your total points. The points might be just a bit less since there is a bit of extra time to write and transmit the data. My system usually takes around 30 minutes or so to write and transmit the data and another 5-10 minutes to get a new work unit. Edit: I just checked your stats and it looks like you got 53929 points at 6pm today.

I will definitely try this. It is definitely easier than all the chmod stuff. jasonanderson I just got home from work to find that my first -bigadv project had finished! I am sure there were some GPU points in that mix, so it is hard to know how much I got for the bigadv project. But, seeing that many points was a nice sight. It was nice to check it this morning and see that I have crossed the 200K barrier. At this rate, I will definitely join the millionaire club before the end of the year. Thanks again for all your help!

chumbucket843 so i have been thinking about buying a gulftown es. is it possible to make vmware support 12 threads? VMware Player at this time has a limit of 8 CPU's. If you try to set more than 8, the player will give you a notice saying that 8 is the max and will then exit. Hopefully a future version will support more processors.

I added a new version of the VMware image to the guide yesterday (thanks to WB for uploading the file). The changes / fixes are listed in the ChangeLog. One of the things I changed in the new version is to allow for full read and write access to the fah network share. This will make it possible to copy the queue.dat and work files to the host OS and also copy from the host OS back to the Linux system for recovery. One possibility would be to map the fah share to a drive letter and setup a batch file to copy the files on a scheduled time. The new version also has a script to make it possible to upgrade the kernel using only one command. There have been reports of frame time differences from one kernel version to another. The image has the latest stable kernel currently but as new versions come out, I can put a tar file together with the kernel upgrade that the script can use.

Amazing work. Thank you. Once my next bigadv finishes I will try this new image. Thanks also for the SSH information. That will help if I want to log in from my laptop to check on the VM. I am curious, is there a way to tell the client to stop after it finishes a project? I mean sort of like how the GPU client can be set to pause when finished. I ask this as my bigadv project should finish tomorrow morning and I would like it to not start a new project right away. I am hoping to do my Win 7 install and then use the new image. So, I don't want all that time factoring into the bonus calculation. If there is no option to set pause when finished, will I get "penalized" in any way if I stop it and delete the work folder after it starts a new project in the morning?
