OK.
I had an original Titan X for 6 months, the machine was stored safely for 6 months while I recovered from surgery, and then I played it for another 2 months before it started going bad.
Tested and tested for months, got it going somewhat with msi afterburner with fans all out, it slowly died on me. One of the things that was happening was that it would not go into pci-e 3.x mode anymore, and was getting really slow with massive popin from every game, and desktop load times in the minutes. Eventually it just gave out (fan) and started heating to extremes and wouldnt load ui at all.

Well, my rma came, I already had the AIO water cooling solution for it. It ran great, for about 3 weeks, then it started throttling (seemed like), then it started getting bad popin, and now I am only getting pci-e 2.0 again, and games are running al 2/3 their normal fps (again, just like the 1st Titan).
The only thing that hasnt happened now is the not loading ui. I still get the desktop, albeit very slowly, even the login screen half the time doesnt show me typing in my password, it just goes to desktop after a little bit. Every once in a while it will load correctly and gaming is fine, but that is fewer and fewer times now.
This is just getting to be stupid bad. The thing has been on water and 70% fan speed all the time, except when gaming where it goes to 100% fan speed.
This should NOT be happening. AGAIN.
Others have had 4-5 bad 980ti's in a row.

I have NEVER oc'ed either video card.
I routinely clean my machine of dust.

I am getting really really mad about this.
I dont have a job anymore, I am handicapped, I dont get any income at all, and now I have to rma another card. And, the one I get in return in all likelyhood will end up going bad as well.
AND I am out a AIO solution, as I cant affoed the pads that go on the Corsair AIO, since I will have to rip the foam things off to put on the air cooler that came with the evga card.
I cant afford this.
And I am very upset because this was supposed to be my gaming machine to last for at least 5 years, and everything else works except my stupid evga titan x card (yes, my 780gtx runs the machine just fine, actually better than the titan in some cases).

    Hello,

it seems unlikely that you would continue to have this exact same issue after an RMA.

Do you have means of testing your GPU in another system? Have you tried clearing CMOS to reset any overclocks you may have had?

    Yep, I reset bios already.
I boot up and sometimes it goes to 2.0 and sometimes its at 3.0
I have no idea why. And once its at 2.0, it stays at 2.0, until I reboot, and then I might have a chance it goes to 3.0, but just a chance.
Again, gtx780 works flawlessly same system same pcie slot.
I definitely have the psu for it, 1300 gold evga psu.
The popin issue is still present at 3.0 though, and if thats the card running fine (which it isnt, it hasnt run fine since the first 3 weeks I had it) then I would hate to see a card that doesnt run fine.

I have another system to put it in (an amd system, with a dvi monitor, not like this I7 and Displayport Gsync 2560x1440 144hz monitor), but like I said, I am disabled and it is hard to remove and put an air cooled gpu, let alone a water cooled gpu. :(

    Hello,

I understand it would be difficult to test in another system considering.

In your bios settings, do you have the available option to force GEN 3 PCI instead of auto?

Nope, it defaults to Auto when you have an m.2 drive installed in the pcie 3 lane. Auto is automatically set as 3.0 though, thats what I dont understand how it could be setting to 2.0. But, the card sets as x16.1.1, then when a game starts it goes to pcie 2.0, instead of 3.0, like half the time at least.
The only other option is x8, and that is just for sli x2, as the 3rd pcie x16 lane is used by the m.2 drive.
    So, Auto = 3.0

Have you updated to the latest bios available for your particular motherboard?

    Do you have CSM enabled?

Try doing the registry modification listed here to see if it helps make the card run in gen3 mode.

    I have the latest bios.
I have no idea what csm is.

    @sajin
When I am able to get on the computer, I will do that, thanks.
But, even when it is in 3.0 mode, it doesnt run right still, thats what is troubling. Along with the long startup to desktop and fan not working right, these were precursers to my 1st titan x going out.
    :(

My motherboard is the sabertooth x99, and has slot covers as well as the motherboard being covered also, so no, there is no chance that anything is stuck anywhere.
    Thanks for asking though.

    Re: Titan X not going pci-e 3.x anymore, 2nd card 2017/03/26 15:01:13 (permalink)
Well since the bios reset, the card has been pcie 3.0 all the time (except when it is in low power state where it is 16.1.1).
But, the card still isnt acting right. I am still getting horrible popin in every game (everything pops in about 10 feet in front of my character, no matter the game. On my gtx780, the popin is like 100 yards away, like normal, so I know its the cards fault, as an old card on the same nvidia driver works just fine). The desktop loads up SO slow 99% of the time, although 1% of the time it will load right fast (Tthis does NOT happen on my gtx780 with the exact same monitor and DP cable). Games seem to run at 2/3 of the speed since 3 weeks after receiving this rma card. I still get moments where it seems I drop frames (lots of them, like at least 3 or 4 frames, and enemies in games warp around and are 20 feet from where I last saw them. Again, this does NOT happen on my gtx780 with the exact same monitor and DP cable).

Also, I PLEAD evga to make a new bios for the Titan X (old one) to NOT LET IT GO TO LOW POWER STATES like the 1080's do. 135mhz is NOT enough to drive my 2560x1440 144hz Gsync monitor just web browsing and watching video's and whatnot. Also, the fans are stupid ridiculously low, and do NOT cool the VRMS enough, and we should not HAVE to install 3rd party software to make our fans cool the card enough to actually use it without it overheating the vrms even when water cooled.

Nvidia's new driver (which is NEEDED for a few of the new games) the power state workaround does not work anymore. It does NOT power the card on like it used to in a couple drivers older. Again, Nvidia power state workaround does NOT work anymore. If it did work, then we could use that, but it does not work anymore. Maybe thats why I am getting only 135mhz and my fan does not power on anymore, unless I use msi afterburner. But, even using msi afterburner, only the fan seems to be working, and when I play a game I still only get 2/3 of what I used to get fps wise and popin is horrible. BUT, all this may be the card going out again, BUT it seemed to start happening badly with the latest (for me) driver, 378.49. I am afraid to install 378.92 drivers for fear of what they will do to my video card even more. Sigh, a new bios that tells nvidia drivers to NOT go into low power states would solve this issue and probably all the other 900 series issues that people are having since the crappy 1000 series drivers came out. And evga wont do a friggin thing about it but give us a new card that is going to have the same problem over and over and over. :(

Again, I PLEAD evga to make a new bios for the Titan X (old one) !
Make it available to people that dont need low power states and dont care about noise!
Make it so we can ask for it, or you tell us when a thread is made where the cards are not working right, as a last resort, for the MANY people that have had issues since the nvidia driver update to the 1000 series.

I BEG you to make a new bios available to us.
    PLEASE!

Enabling k-boost inside msi afterburner will force the card to run at its maximum performance state at all times. Instructions on how to get k-boost working with msi afterburner can be found here. Make sure to set your fans to 100% inside msi afterburner since you don't care about noise.

Should K-boost be able to be used on my EVGA Titan X (Maxwell) ?
It is grayed out for me (the big K button).
    I am on Windows 8.1 64 Pro (direct X 11).

Will the workaround work for me NOT being on win 10 and NOT having a 1000 series card?

    P.S.
Should I have anything set in afterburner? I never OC video cards, and never use this except to put my fans to higher speeds, and dont know the program at all. I mean, I know literally nothing about it.

Found it, grayed out on the right side.
There is also Overvolt and OverBoost, do I need to enable those as well?
It says it has to restart to apply, so I need to have it restart with the 'start with windows' enabled also right?

I thought I borked my os!
I had 'start with windows' enabled, and when I rebooted it put my pc back to like it was almost 2 years ago!
Started afterburner up, and told it to NOT start with windows, rebooted, and back to today os again.
Whew, that was big time scary!

Anyway, I have kboost enabled now, and it shows it as 1189 mhz now, 96 degrees F (35.5 C).
Firefox is working fast like it should, there is no screen tearing anymore, no stuttering of FF or Chrome browser.
BUT, it is smelling a little bit like burnt electronics though. Not a lot. But like when you turn on one of those little space heaters that havent been used since last winter? That kind of smell.
    Should I disable Kboost?
Damn, its working like it used to the first few weeks I had the card too.
    :(

Crud, my wife smelled the burnt electronics smell also!
But, once she was in the room for 10 seconds, couldnt smell it anymore, like me.

As for the K-Boost, it made my card like before (maybe even better frames than what I used to get! Or maybe they have been bad so long I forgot what they were originally, sigh).

So, since this makes it like the card USED to be, should I uninstall Afterburner and install PrecisionX instead?
Or are the 2 so similar it shouldnt matter?
And what about that tiny burnt smell?

Also, can I now go back to the msi afterburner ui? I hate the evga ui. I can track max gpu temp better in afterburner (not that they are bad at all, like normal, but just in case).

I've used k-boost before and have never smelled anything like you're describing. You'll need to leave afterburner installed with the workaround applied to use the k-boost feature. Since k-boost is now enabled you can switch the skin if you want.

    OK.
But 'Should' I be using PresisionX instead of Afterburner, now that we know Kboost solves all of my problems? (at least so far it has anyway).
Or is afterburner on an evga titan x fine with that workaround?
I wont remember to install the workaround with new drivers in a few months. :(

You can continue to use afterburner. Just because you own a evga titan x doesn't mean you have to use precision x.

I played a few games, a d they worked well, except quake 3 arena there was a little warping of the players sometimes. With a 75Mb connection, that shouldnt happen, but someone can always be hacking.
Warhammer Vermintide worked excellent for the 1st time in months and months.
ESO worked great for the 1st time in the same months.
And web browsers didnt chop like a chef when scrolling, and were fast like they should be.
Apps launched super fast like they used to.

So, having said all that, it does sound like the video bios plus the new cruddy nvidia driver low power states for the 900 serries?
Or is this titan also bad?

Sounds like a power state issue. Driver or hardware issue? Anyone's guess. Glad to hear everything is working well at this time.

Well, it ISNT working well, since I have to put it into this all on state all the time, even when just web browsing.

Like I said, the card worked fine for the 1st 3 weeks I had it, then it started geeking out, and getting worse over time (ie: something new seems to not work anymore every month or so), so should I send this card back in?
Or even bother talking to a rep to see if I should send it back in ?

Send the card back if you don't like having to use k-boost all the time.

I am just worried that if I use the card like this for a while longer, and it goes out permanently, that it might be out of warrenty.
Also, that they wont have anymore old titans left.
    :(

    OK.
I just went in for a cleaning yesterday and noticed the dip in the video card again at the power end, and cinched it up again with heavy twine, and guess what?
I didnt need kboost today to play. It played fine for a whole map of Warhammer Vermintide, and desktop pci-e and clocks are all as they should be just like the 1st 3 weeks I had the card.

So, I know this is redundant, but I am hoping an EVGA TECH will see this and handle this directly with me.
I definitely need an rma, since after the first 3 weeks this thing has been bad.
BUT, I cant afford to pay to have it shipped.
I no longer have credit cards (I havent worked since about 3 months after I bought this computer, which was about 2 years ago).
I dont care about cross shipping, since I can use my MUCH better 780GTX in the meantime (which is an EVGA card, as is my GTX580, and my 9800, and my 8800. I have never had a single issue with any of these, and stil have them in old machines working today).
But, there has GOT to be something an EVGA TECH can do for me.

I have done clean drivers, old drivers, even got water cooling, and nothing has helped except Kboost (which dumps a TON of heat into my machine, making the video card hotter (I have temps and fps logged, which is worse when kboost is on. my whole room heats up from 73 degrees to 78 degrees, just with kboost. without kboost, its staying at 73 degrees. and its not even hot here yet, its 40's and 50's outside still), making my m.2 os drive hotter (its right below the video card) and making my usb hotter. Having kboost on creates a dead spot of high temps right below my video card and right above it. Or, it just makes everything around it hotter.) and/or stringing up the corner edge of the video card so it doesnt sag every time the twine gets saggy/warm.
Oh, and the temps got to 154.4f (68c) and I never once heard the fan turn on higher than it is at just desktop.
And temps and fps were (wierd that low fps was better w/o kboost, but top fps was better with kboost on. maybe low dips because of the searing temps to my m.2 drive and usb? ):
    With Kboost on:
    normal desktop 111f+ ( 43.88c)
    gaming 151f (66.11c)
    60fps to 130fps

Without kboost (fan NEVER turned on, or it was so low I couldnt hear it, but its on when LBoost is on):
    normal desktop 118f (37.22c)
    gaming 154.4f (68c)
    68fps to 112fps

    Remember, this is still watercooled.

AGAIN, short of putting a HUGE HAF-X case on my desk top (which there isnt room for), or using metal twine (which I am afraid to do, as it might short out the card) to keep the video card from sagging (I have no odea what is going on. the video board is getting tweaked? something like that), the only thing I can do is RMA again.

So, PLEASE, can an EVGA tech PLEASE help me with the rma?

Yes, I know, but techs that have been here know whats been going on with my 2nd card now, as I have posted in other threads also.
Thats why I am hoping to get a tech that knows whats going on.

Best thing to do would be to call tech support and ask for a prepaid shipping label.
