Are the E5 processors Engineering Samples? (E5 not ES)

No, E5 is a series like the E3, E5, E7, and E8 lines of Xeon processors.

Not sure if it is worth it but I could sell it on ebay and get a decent price and maybe get a 6900K or 6960X? Thoughts?

Try the Xeon e5-2696 v4 with 22 cores, 44 threads, and 50MB L3. It will smoke your 5960x, and the 6960x in any benchmark you can think off.

Yeah, starting with the V4 line they are all multiplier locked. Those sons of guns!

I'm afraid you are wrong. I run 3 different e5's v4 on 3 x99 classified boards, and all 3 processors are unlocked.

Trying to figure out what is the retail stepping / revision for the E5-2697 v4?

I see non-ES retail versions but the stepping is "1" and revision is blank?

So you're saying that you can MULTIPLIER overclock those chips?

Because I know of several threads over on HardForum where it is stated, just like all of the other 2XXX and 4XXX and 8XXX series in the V1/V2/V3 lines, that they can be overclocked a little only using the Bclk and are 100% multiplier locked (beyond what the top boost state is - e.g. boost is 35 multiplier, all cores can be set to 35 but no higher).

ispot, Yes please I'd love to see the same of the e5 v4's you have! What models are you running? Thinking of pulling the trigger on the E5-2699 or 2696 OEM version...

One thing I am concerned about though is power consumption... will these xeons eat up my power bill more so than the 5960x?

what stepping & revisions are your ES CPU's?

They are not ES, all are QS. QS's are much better then ES's as they are 99.999% to 100% identical to final retail release. I have been testing Intel CPU's for over 12 years, and I can tell you that Engineering Samples are stable enough to most common computer users running all sorts of software including most power demanding games. If anyone here has a stability issue related to an ES processor, please prove me wrong and post your proof. The only thing about ES's & QS's processors that they are the property of Intel which is signed to the party testing said product. The agreement we sign with Intel prohibits the transfer of ownership of such product. So, people who are selling these processors on eBay are
In clear violation of their agreement and if get caught, they loose their contract/privilege with Intel.

And I forgot to mention that beside the fact that all retail/OEM Xeon E5 V4 processors are unlocked, for the 12 years I have been testing CPU's, all pre-release processors are always unlocked for the purpose of testing. So, the Engineering & Qualification samples of let's say E5 V3, all test units sent out are unlocked even though the final E5 V3 is locked.

I'd still like to see a screenshot of the turbo multiplier actually operating above the rated max turbo multiplier.

https://hardforum.com/thr...ed-multiplier.1907180/ shows that retail models are multiplier locked, where the 16xx v1/2/3s were multiplier unlocked.

This should work just fine on my x99 classified with the latest bios? Not planning on going with ECC memory or anything... let me know guys thanks!

Got my new E5-2696 V4 and it flies! One thing though is that I don't see it use turbo boost to 3.6Ghz under load? Turbo is enabled in the bios and i'm on the latest version... all drivers updated etc... thoughts?

It appears the device for Turbo Boost Technology in device manager isn't working:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful.

I've tried updating the drivers but that didn't work..

I disabled "Turbo" in the BIOS and rebooted and it shows 3.66Ghz on the task manager...

https://communities.intel.com/thread/103356

Based on this thread, the Xeon's only use Turbo 2.0 not Max Turbo 3.0 in windows so I'm not sure how to change this or confirm it's working as expected? Single core performance in geekbench is very very low...

end of last year I was sooo close to pulling trigger on the X99 chipset...but when I saw that it wasn't any huge jumps performance wise from my Z87,costs were still high and knowing RYZEN & Kabylake were coming out, Im glad I w8ted, even though it was difficult, now my eyes are set on the RYZEN 5 which is all I need for what I plan to do to my new rig i'm building soon.

end of last year I was sooo close to pulling trigger on the X99 chipset...but when I saw that it wasn't any huge jumps performance wise from my Z87,costs were still high and knowing RYZEN & Kabylake were coming out, Im glad I w8ted, even though it was difficult, now my eyes are set on the RYZEN 5 which is all I need for what I plan to do to my new rig i'm building soon.

If you can show me a gaming system that beats this, then please do so:

I too have the 5906x and TBH there isn't anything that maxes out my CPU's except for Handbrake.  The question would be, what do YOU use your system for?
