Mining is just a small portion of gpu sales and I agree that the manufactures underestimated the gaming market. The economy is doing well and people have extra money to spend on their pc's. My theory is the jump in gpu sales could be attributed to people upgrading to higher resolution with monitor prices being fairly low. I know several people with 1080 monitors still running the 7 series cards just fine. But the majority of my gaming friends have 1440 monitors at 144hz. A few have 4k. That range is 1070 cards + and people are upgrading to keep their framerates high.

I'm going to OfficeMax to buy some sharpies... This afternoon while dreaming of getting a new EVGA 1080 Ti, I'll be converting my Acer 38" 3480x1600 ultra-wide to a interactive drawing surface with
real time "human" input. It's brand new technology that I've created myself out of necessity and good old American ingenuity. I'll be selling special full color sets of sharpies with "Full-Sync" certified compatibility so everyone can start using their monitor to create again. Only $199.99 while introductory prices last (which will be $299.99 actually following the AMD Vega pricing model ;-)

What magical game was released in dec that caused high gamer demand???

I know the price went crazy high for miners at thst time. So I think it was high miner demand.

The high gamer demand would have been pent up from years of "we're broke" due to the Great Recession and it's lingering aftermath.
Then along comes the Trump backed TAX CUT following a year of widespread OPTIMISM about the economy and all of a sudden folks anticipate having more money available to spend - and start spending it on their credit cards.
That's just a theory though - the FACTS are that PC sales in general and especially higher-end systems like Gamers typically build have seen a HUGE jump this year over recent years - and pretty much nobody was anticipating that sort of thing happening.

Prices did NOT go crazy high in December, there was a very short spike but pricing has already dropped back down to BEFORE December pricing (in fact most altcoins are lower NOW than they were this SUMMER) - and most of that spike was Bitcoin not altcoins, which does NOT affect GPU demand since you can't mine Bitcoin on GPUs.

I'm starting to think the PRIMARY cause on the Nvidia side was bad timing on the part of Nvidia over having TSMC shift production from Pascal GPUs to Volta GPUs right around the end of the year.
Otherwise, the current shortage would be going AWAY by now.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

I can't get a set of case/power supply/card to stay in the place in the cart panel... Life shouldn't be this hard. :-(

As long as cryptos exist and as long as they can be profitably mined with gpu’s then you are always going to have that tension between supply and demand. You really cannot ascribe a moral judgement to it. If the math works out - then in a free market people are going to buy these things for purposes manufacturers, board partners and other customers may not approve of.

Once fab plants are built, everything is pretty much automated. Demand is what it is. Nvidia and AMD are making rational decisions (hopefully) right now based on what they think will be long term demand from all sources.

Supply is the problem. There’s no reason for Nvidia / AMD (or Intel one day) can’t accommodate long term demand.

And they will... eventually.

I used to mine. Now I compute.

I agree. They just need to make more chips and they can make more money. The second hand is going to be really cheap if crypto stops been productive.

Model of the card. Be sure to know which model # you are going for as Jacob will typically post stock by model.

Its an effort to supply those loyal customers with cards first I suppose. Keep in mind that with 15 more posts on this forum you qualify for elite.

I am glad I can qualify for the Elite. But in my eyes I don't see why I would need to be in order to get my hands on an 1080ti. But then again I see that EVGA is trying to stay loyal to the people in the forums.
