I'm leaning towards skipping both CPU & GPU upgrades/builds this time around.

My 13900k is still a way away from being a CPU bottleneck but upgrading to a 5080 will likely happen next year... (so long as there will be a 24gb version) don't want to drop $2500 on a 5090 nor do I want a 600w GPU lol. There is a chance i might go for a 9800X3d later on... but Q3 or Q4 of 2025 at the earliest.

I'll be getting a 5080 or 5090, assuming the specs are good (I skipped the 4000 series on my rig), I may stick with the Z790 Dark KP though.

Naaa. My 12900k is fine. But I may jump from a 3080 to 5080 since that will make an even larger difference than going to Arrow Lake.

Not exactly inspred by the launch day reviews of the new Intel Arrow Lake CPUs. Although I do think Derbauer's review seems the most fair in pointing out the over clocking potential while the other major reviewers seem to just be happy to beat Intel with a stick. So I started looking at the 14th gen again and saw a 14900kf for under €450. Thinking this might be a nice upgrade from my 10th gen cpu....

Well that was the most miserable review ever. looks like I'm sitting on the 13900k z690 DDR4 for another year, this old machine tops all those charts

imho 13900k is fine if you lock the clocks and undervolt it . I ran it for 17 months at 5.6/4.4/4.3 at about 1.3v and it was totally fine . After I heard about stability issues I locked all P cores to 5.5 and 1.29v , Cinebench 40280 @76c, TSE CPU 13289; which with my ram timings its as fast as a 14900ks with DDR5 7200. The new micro code and bios that is out now slows them down a bit.

I plan to build a new pc. My old rig i plan to give to my son. Gathering a few parts so far...... I want some advice on what should I go with for storage for movies, pictures and large files like games back up. So far this is what I have....
    1. Lg c4 48 monitor 144hz @ 4k
    2. Asus x870 tuff wifi
    3. 3x Samsung 990 pro 4tb m.2 OP system used for gaming
    4. Corsair ax1500i psu
    5. Logitech g915 tkl keyboard & mouse

Looking for ideas for storage for movies and pictures and back up game images.

When the cpu and gpu's come out I plan to get the 9800x3d and 5090.
As far as ddr5, I plan to go with 2 sticks of corsair dominator platinum in speeds of 6000-6400 Mhz. Not sure if I go with 32gb, 64gb or 96gb? I heard 2 sticks are faster than 4. True?

Not sure on case.... I want something with alot glass, big and alot wow. Any suggestions? I love my corsair 540 air but this time I want something much better...

Maybe a networked NAS setup, so your family can access it too. WD Red Pros are ideal for NAS systems, and they go right up to 24TB capacity drives. Synology or QNAP seem to be pretty popular for the NAS system.

I'd recommend 2 sticks - usually better clocks and tighter timings too. Size depends on what you're doing. Lots of rendering and multitasking and ram-intensive stuff you might want more capacity. I used to always recommend 32GB (2 x 16GB) for most people, but these days if you're building a new rig and budget isn't a big concern, 2 x 32GB sticks might be better for you - again, depends on what you plan to do with your PC. I have the Corsair Dominator Platinums (2 x 16GB 7200MHz DDR5) and I'm very happy with them.

I used to have the 540 Air in white - absolutely loved it, especially the dual chambers, plus it just looked good. I'm now using the Corsair 7000X RGB, which is a monster of a case, MUCH bigger than the 540, and great for water cooling, plus it looks great with a lot of tempered glass. If you want a big glass showcase though, the Lian Li O11 Dynamic EVO (XL model if you want to go big) is very popular and hard to beat.

Hope that helps. Post some pics of your rig once you have it running!

    1. I have the Ultragear 48" OLED, if you want the more gaming-centric settings, go this route instead of the C4 TV; if you plan to use it more as a full multimedia device, using the built-in OS, etc. the TV is better.
    2. That's fine
    3. Great SSD, don't get sucked into the gen 5.0 shenanigans, the heat and wear/tear is not worth the trade offs in speed.
    4. That's fine too
    5. Love that combo

Storage ideas... I built myself a nice little home media server: Fractal Node 804, i3-10100, 32gb RAM (RAM disk for transcoding), and it currently houses 3x 6TB WD Blue drives along with 2x 20TB Seagate Exos drives. Def stick to WD if you can, the Seagates are super loud in comparison, but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on them. Case gives you a ton of options and expandability in the future.

Currently slapping together a 9800X3D system now, into an O11D Evo; but honestly, I dunno if I can afford what the 5000 series is gonna cost AND make sense in upgrading from a 3080.

Thanks bud...post some pics when u r done!

For you, going from a 3080, I would snag a used 4090......I bet those things would be dirt cheap when the 5xxx cards come out.

As far as c4, I'm coming from an lg 50" it's not oled and it mid tier, but at the time it did have 120hz @ 4k. I do watch movies and browsing on it and love it.....I can't wait to try out the c4 48!!

As far as sound goes, my old pc has a sound blaster card with a Logitech z5500 5.1 system and love it..... I was wondering if I go with a sound bar with woofer or reciever and 5.1 speaker set up? Do I get the sound blaster card as well? Can anyone recommend a good sound system? Something small of course...no tower speakers.

Yeah I'm currently in the midst of trying to get something with more RAM to drive my 4K 48" OLED and my 24" 1440 reading pane. Some games are a struggle to get over 60FPS.

You're in for a treat, OLED is an entirely different experience man. Especially if you're in a dark room where you can fully appreciate the blacks being completely black.

Re: ANYONE BUILDING A NEW RIG THIS NEXT GENERATION? 2024/11/06 12:29:05 (permalink)
I'm contemplating on finally upgrading still running a i9-10920x and a Evga 3090ti. Even though the i9-285k is slower in game performance than the i9-14900k it still going to be way faster than what I have and not sure if I want to upgrade to a EOL platform.  98003XD looks good but not sure if I want to go the AMD route. Plus Since I also use Cad on my gaming computer think the i9-285k might be faster than the 14900k. What you guys think?
