So we last heard that the Dark was going to be released within 2 weeks on the 22nd of July. Today makes it 16 days from that date. Looks like EVGA really is trying to make this release close to the Ivy-E release. Pretty sad...

The Dark is arriving this week at EVGA. Jacob said this week that we "X79 user" will be contacted.

Will X79 Dark support a PCIe x1 soundcard when running 4-way SLI x8/x8/x8/x8? Do I need to disable Marvell 9230 or 9172 controllers to free PCIe lanes?

If you run 4way sli you will not have a slot available for a sound card. you would have to run on board sound.

3 and 4 way SLI is a joke anyway when it comes to gaming....the cost and 1-2% if that performance increase is not worth the money. even with a OC 3930k your still not taking full advantage of say a 780 or titan 2way sli config.

It's going to be a while before we see a CPU keep up with what the GPU's are pushing today. That or until HUMA cross's over to Nvidia side.

It is possible with a riser cable, seen it in a RIVE build.

I really wonder if these chips will be in stock and sold in the next few days.

Look like you and I bought the first 2  , Dustinng.

Are you planning to de-lid right away or run it as is?  I'll be curious to hear how the temps are while OC'd without de-lidding.

How are you going to delid something that is soldered down? Unless you want to take a lot of time with a heatgun to melt the solder.

There is no need to de-lid, they did it right on these chip with a solder base compound: http://www.techpowerup.com/img/13-06-25/227b.jpg

I'm not going to de-lid mine. It should transfer heat just as good as the 3930k im running now. They both have soldered lids so the heat should pass through well unlike Ivy bridge that were not soldered.

You can't delid if it's soldered on without damaging the cores. Don't try it unless you want to blow $300+.

Thanks for the info.  I think maybe I mixed up Ivy with Haswell with the higher temp issue's??

waiting for EVGA office to open. I'm trying to get a hold of them. I'm in the step up process now and I want to keep my X79 SLI so I can build a 2nd gaming rig for work. I hope they let me do that. I've already paid the step up fee.

Probably not as they require the old board as part of the process.  The only way around it for me was to pick up a Classy and pull the FTW to send in during the interim and hopefully step up that within the 90 days.

I need to build a second rig anyways... might as well start with a motherboard!

This is completely ridiculous why does EVGA require the old board before sending the new one!? You verified my purchase, you took my CC, and money for the Step-Up board... If I don't return my old one... BILL ME! I can't afford to have my work machine at home down for 3-5 days! This may be an acceptable process when RMAing a video card (being most can toss in any spare they have laying around) but like most here I only have ONE x79 board.

They are local to me, I can drive it to their office if they wish to speed up the process...

I have received my e-mail, and started the RMA process. However, I just realized something (using Canadian dollar):

The Dark is $399. The RMA process is $240, but excludes the return shipment which I estimate at around $50 - $60. So in total the RMA process should be around $300. The original X79 cost me $410 excluding tax.

This means that after RMA I end up with a Dark and $300 + $462 ($762) including taxes, out of pocket. People that do not RMA but buy the board outright end up with a Dark and an X79 for $399 + $462 ($861).

In summary people that do not RMA get two motherboards for $861, while people that do RMA get one motherboard for $762 plus the inconvenience of down time!!!

one of the reason I Just cancelled my setup.

I don't know how I overlooked this, I guess I assumed it was like 99% of the other companies I've ever dealt with doing an RMA... I've never heard of this "send it to us first" process, especially when it means your ENTIRE system will be down for XX amount of days (and this is not a "gaming" system). So now it seems the more reasonable option is to cancel everything (stepup payment) return the FTW for a refund and wait to buy the Dark... :/

Yes, I purchased it through Amazon, they care about their customers and offer things like that...

EDIT: Oh sorry I see my error... I meant to say "X79 FTW"

I wish I still had my old X58 :( not a single issue with that board.
