Her eis the slot assignments:

1 card = X16
2 cards = x16/x16
3 cards = x16/x16/x8

Then it should support 2 GTX 690 @ 16x?
Gen2 or Gen3 with the i7 3970X
Thanks
Bill

You will probably need IVY-E for full GEN3 support. A 3970X will still be GEN2.

False, SB-E, as denoted by Intel's documentation, fully supports PCI Express up to 8 GT/s. http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1833595

Glad that one is put to rest.

Yep and my AMD 7850  Card is a PCIe 3.0 card and has NEVER seen Gen 3 work... AMD support could not help THOUGH they tried...

Asus RIVE tested 4 x 7970's and my 3 x 680s all Gen 3 speeds.  It's the EVGA X79 line-up that is the problem.  Maybe this board will be different?

I SURE hope so AMD as well as EVGA could not get it to work. It had better work on the Dark and hopefully they will be able to have one heck of a decent credit for it as I have NEVER had a 100% working board, the same for many here! I am happy mine boots and and works after some of the horror stories I have read here. Its not that EVGA has not TRIED to help with the 3 RMAs etc. etc. It is just that they couldn't fix what was wrong...

This would be a better link into that particular thread.

Running the PCIe at 8 GT/s is merely putting a 60% OC on the bus. Were the GEN 3 Command and Control set in play, the optimized instructions shave a considerable amount of latency off the whole process and the combination actually results in twice the bandwidth of GEN 2.

The only gains anyone's noticed from forcing "GEN 3"'s speed have been single-digit in range, and do not in any way constitute "proof" that full GEN 3 compliance exists - only the increase in frequency. It takes much more than an examination by enthusiast apps like GPU-Z to say, "Hey, here's GEN 3 all right".

And as long as the possibility exists that the only thing keeping a $1K sale of Xeon silicon from hitting the trash bin is to be "retired" as a $1K Extreme with only GEN 2 certification and reliability then you have no support for preaching GEN 3 as Gospel for Sandy Bridge-E CPUs and X79 systems...

LOL, I'm not preaching, just saying it works on my 3930Ks and Intel says it works as well.

You keep on citing how you know it doesn't work without any sort of link or evidence to validate that it, in fact, is broken... just heavily overclocked.  I, instead, present technical documentation that validates the chip handles up to 8 GT/s transfer speeds which also happens to meet the PCI Express 3.0 standards.  In addition, it has worked flawlessly for me on my X79 boards (of which I've had 5), CPUs (of which I've had two), and graphics cards (of which I've had two).

Do problems exist? Sure.  But no one has yet to identify with any sort of consistency whether it is the board, the CPU, or the add-in cards.  I guess I'm just extremely lucky that of the 5 crappy boards EVGA sent me, they all negotiate at PCI Express 3.0 speeds.  So, the combination of Intel's documentation and my own experience with multiple components must be false... because you said so?  If I'm wrong, then fine, show me some conclusive evidence that disproves Intel's documentation and my own testing that SB-E CPUs do not support PCI Express 3.0 speeds and are merely just PCI Express 2.0 overclocked 60%.

Wonder if the new mobo will have a bios that will allow for trim in R0 as other OEM's have released for their x79 offerings?

I don't understand this, if this mobo is the new EVGA flag-ship mobo, why the EVGA engineers down-grade the capacitors to use now the normal/standard capacitors instead of the premium Tantalum capacitors used for the EVGA X79 FTW/Classified ?

Maybe the tantalum capacitors were causing issues?

No, one of the guys in the production line was cursed.

POSCAP's are nice but they are very expensive, and use a lot of PCB real estate.

For every standard solid capacitor you need 2 POSCAP's, this uses up a lot of PCB space in the end and with 8 DIMM's and a socket 2011 + 4-way SLI in an EATX form factor, it is just as effective in most cases to use POSCAPs where it matters most instead of everywhere.

I too would hesitate to by another EVGA motherboard.  buying their graphics cards is a no-brainer.....  check this out: everyone that I have spoken to at work (computer service and building) say that they are done w/ EVGA motherboards.  that's  lot of people.  and each of my co-workers give their opinions on what to buy to our customers:

 X x N = like a grip of people!

I not not "done" w/ EVGA.  I am angry that my $400 board was such a waste of money!  and now this board???  I love the theme.  but I have only one queston:

WILL IT WORK, EVGA?

EVGA, how do you plan to win back loyal customers who were burned by your X79 mess?  I mean, come on, some people had 4 or 5 RMAs?!!! and still the board (x79 classified) didn't work?

Noo better is right, you can change alone, that is like before, single sleeve than all in one big, or only half of cable close to PSU in one big sleeve. Only enough little EVGA ... I don't know how you call that for tight cables and that's best...
Of course it's easiest with one sleeve if you remove every day cables. But in PC better is single.
Molex and SATA cables on NEX is fantastic you never can make alone like that. I mean only someone after 100 samples who make for other people and than need to use cables and make alone everything, nothing fabric can look like that.

Hopefully this board will bring back the good ole days just like when the X58 was king

I hope too.

No plastic heat sinks of course, that would not be very effective.

Also dual GB Intel NIC. Actually we only use Intel NIC on premium boards starting with Z77 Stinger.

Also above SLI config can work, but need to find a bridge.

No plastic heat sinks of course, that would not be very effective.

What is the highlighted part made out of if its not plastic?

Actually we only use Intel NIC on premium boards starting with Z77 Stinger.

"premium" boards only?
Why not all EVGA motherboards to give customers better quality product.  Does evga not want to attract more customers.

Same Ceramic that most asus high end boards or the other x79 boards use. CeraMX if i'm not wrong. Used on sabertooth.

big suprise on the color scheme. The black/red was awesome when it was one of the first like it on the market, now they are just bland and overdone with no features that make me choose it over something like an asus.

Can anyone explain to me why one would choose this board over the Asus Rampage IV Extreme which has already been out for almost 1.5 years? Does this merely compete, or does it go above and beyond?
