Re: 3080ti ftw3 undervolting

dev.null I'd like to do this, but confused by how to achieve it with the software (Precision and Afterburner are...crummy). What I see in these graphs being posted is a flat line boost from whatever voltage you're targeting all the way up to peak voltage. How is this actually constraining the voltage? Is there another setting that needs to be configured to limit max voltage? I can see how to increase max voltage in X1, but not decrease...
Like you I wanted to look into this and I did try to follow examples of others had set. With Afterburner I started off with suggested setting and went through the stages. For whatever reason Afterburn at any setting would simply not stay stable when bench marking or a game loaded up. So ended up just using the Precision X1 to see what it would do to lower heat and keep up performance and I found these results. By just moving the power slider and tweaking the fan speeds up a bit higher than auto settings do, I achieved what I was looking for in reducing heat and wattage, I found the cards Programming still adjusted core clocks to higher settings when it needed to within games. https://forums.evga.com/3080-TI-FTW-and-Precision-X1-lowering-the-temperature-m3415344.aspx Many of the Afterburner videos showing their adjustments would also show a slight drop in FPS any where between 8 to 13 ish depending on how aggressive their settings were. I really didn't find much different with the Precision X1. It will come down to your preference and deciding what works best for you.

My 3080Ti FTW3 Ultra should arrive in a couple of days, but I'm already worrying that my SFX 600W power supply might not be enough to make it stable. CPU is the old but legendary Haswell 4790K, which I think it's already quite power hungry. A new PSU for my ITX build would only go up to 750W and sets me back 150+€ more... So, do you think that undervolting would be the way to go? Thanks

Safer to lower the power limit - even with an undervolt its easy to get up to close to whatever the power limit is set to.

I have been using the precision x1 and strictly setting the power cap at 60% and setting the fans to 65% 4 k resolution. This is a snap shot while I am playing a game ( Ashes of Creations ) By capping the power I can reduce the wattage consumption by about 160 watts and reduce the heat down to what you see in this pic. These numbers are fairly steady while playing. Slight fluctuation no more than 75 or so core clock Mhz. Highest and lows I see is 1965 to 1885 ish on average and it mainly sits where it shown in the snap shot. Depending on games may show a lesser number by a little but stays up over 1800 usually. FPS in games is not much different then settings are at default. The voltage is left alone and run by the cards programming.

Thanks I can confirm with the Precision X 1 my total wattage used in about 400 to 425 watts on a load for my entire computer when I cap the power at 60%. I do see some spikes but they tend to be no higher then 500 watts at most. As my post above shows I still get performance while gaming. Without playing with the voltage. Your card in particular is recommended 850 PSU. It will draw on default settings between 585 to 675 watts and will push 700+ on occasion on a full load. So really do consider a proper PSU supply to start with. BUt yes you can under power the card or undervolt to lower wattage. I just find P X1 to be easy...

Thanks mate, I feel more reassured now, will lower the power limit to 60% and see how it holds. Might hold on ordering the SFX 750W PSU until I redo my entire PC with, likely, a 5800X. Regards,

Dont go to 60 % right away start stepping it down and test with a bench mark to watch for stability. Start at 75% or something like that and try increments of 5 I would buy the 850 W PSU and install it , then it would be ready to go as you add the other stuff. The bonus is they are easy to install and when you update the other parts if your doing a whole new case then its different story. I would still consider gathering the components because you never know what the shortage will be next...A few of my friends needed to upgrade their PSU, I told them I was already ordering mine as I was waiting for my queue to get a card. Well they said why? They will just order it once they get their card... Well now they cant find a good PSU and have to wait.. See my link to give you a reference to what you will see and use. https://forums.evga.com/3080-TI-FTW-and-Precision-X1-lowering-the-temperature-m3415344.aspx

I think buying an adult sized ATX case with mesh panels, lots of fans and and quality 1000w PSU would be the way to go.

To compare the temps I makes sense to set the fanspeed to the exact same value.

Just want to reinforce the point that if your goal with undervolting is to reduce power consumption and improve thermals, you should also reduce the card's power limit, as it is possible for some games to produce a max power load at under 1V vcore.

I use AfterBurner and I use the OC scanner because it 'optimizes' the lower voltage bins FAR higher than the upper voltage bins which is great for old games that can't push this card even in the slightest. So for me I have all sliders at default except +200 for memory & 79% power limit & let the OC Scanner do its thing & see around +185 core on the voltage bins below .800 so the card typically in game at max details @3840x1600 is typically less than 50-70% gpu load & therefore the card uses around 120-160watts playing for example BioShock Infinite fully maxed because the GPU load is so low that the core clock stays around 1100 or so due the the GPU load not asking for higher speed bins. The heaviest use case for me is Apex legends & for that game I use a 104% power limit & a 74% fixed fan speed in an open 'case' (Dimastech) I use headphones so I don't notice the air noise & in game I am seeing 2040-2070 core clocks. I also use the OC scanner for the voltage/frequency curve. Load temps are in the 55-63C range, GPU load is typically 70-95%, and the GPU voltage is typically around 1.043 with spikes up to 1.0825 or something like that. edit: I also wanted to add by capping the power limit to 79% the max power draw I have seen is 312watts when I forget to enable the 104% profile when playing Apex.

Sounds pretty dangerous and a good way to overheat and blow out the card on an unexpected load.

What? How? It's going to step up if it needs to and certainly the temps are fine.

gpu temps only tell half the story games utilizing the entire gpu(rtx and dlss) most certainly can and will max out the power limit, even with a custom voltage curve If the vram is not sufficiently cooled (low fan speed, poor air flow) it will overheat without you even realizing it.

Can't stress the enough. Put my 1300w Seasonic Prime into protect shutdown while locking 1V and 2,040 mhz on a DX11 game in 4K VRR at ~425w. Some of these newer games with poor optimization (like New World) can easily produce a full power load at .9V vcore, or even less. So if can't cool your card properly, set your power limit to actually restrict temps, not undervolt.

I put P12s on my kingpin and you are right the P12 at 100% are very quiet , but I thing peak efficiency is more like 80% , in my KPE rad the extra 20% blew a little harder but it didn't make the temperature cooler on a Radiator that size, but i also has the glass panels in also.

That’s cool. Yk I thought about testing 80% fan speed vs 100%. I like the King Pins what 360 radiator? Id love to put that in front of my open frame case aha. But I just bought the p12 I originally going to buy the slim version which performs identical or little bit better but sadly it was all out of stock everywhere :(. Sandwich lay out would have been much slimmer and slick.

p12 is Such great fan for sound vs pressure and add that you can get 5 for the price of 1 Noctua and its off the chain . I still put the Noctuas on my Radiator now because I had already put in the order and wanted to A/B them myself

AngryGamer94 gpu temps only tell half the story games utilizing the entire gpu(rtx and dlss) most certainly can and will max out the power limit, even with a custom voltage curve If the vram is not sufficiently cooled (low fan speed, poor air flow) it will overheat without you even realizing it.
I've a feeling "The Ascent", a new game from a small Swedish studio, is a similar story. The game runs like an absolute dog on DX12 with Ray Tracing on, and my 3090 acts weird. GPU utilisation all over the place, framerates and frametimes all over the place, a creaky sort of coil whine that I never normally hear. The temps themselves look absolutely fine (58C GPU, 82C memory junction), but I've stopped playing until they release some patches because I can tell my system is having a horrible time trying to run it
