I understand that the 1080 ti FTW3 ships with a thermal pad with a 1mm thickness, but if I decide to replace the thermal pad, does it need to be exactly 1mm thick, or can I get away with using a .5mm or 1.5mm thermal pad?

Just to note: I'm trying to troubleshoot unusually high idle temperatures for a 1080 ti FTW3, which I'm also going to reapply TIM to the chip due to most parts idling at ~55 degrees C with the default fan curves.

Confirm nothing is running in the background Have you performed security scan for bug ? What part is 55 C the GPU ? -- just replace the TIM Room temp ? Case & case fans ? Some good basic info is found here: EKWB Thermal Compound Guidehttps://www.ekwb.com/blog/thermal-compound-guide/ too thin is very bad - no contact too thick can also cause issues

Precision is showing the GPU, VRAM, and power at around 55 degress. The case in question is a Corsair Graphite 780t with four intake fans and three exhaust fans. I don't have anything I can use to determine ambient room temperature at the moment. Malware scans show my system as clean, and I should note that the card has three monitors and a VR headset plugged in to it.

Your card is going to run at a higher frequency with multiple monitors plugged into it. This is normal and will increase your idle temps. What you need to be concerned with is what are your load temps?

Is K boost ON ? What MHz does Precision show ? What is your fan speed currently ? Set custom fan curve

I doubt you need to reapply the thermal pads. If your card is running at full clocks at idle it can cause the temps on the gpu to slowly creep up. Here are the top causes of why a GPU would run at full clocks at idle... #1 You're running multiple monitors. Fix: Enable mutil display power saver using nvidia inspector.#2 Your machine has a virus. Fix: Scan computer using malwarebytes.#3 One or more programs running in the background are using your GPU. Fix: Perform a clean boot of windows.#4 Power management mode inside the nvidia control panel is set to prefer maximum performance. Fix: Set power management mode to adaptive then reboot your computer.#5 Running a resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144Hz. Fix: Change refresh rate to 120Hz.#6 K-Boost is enabled inside Precision X. Fix: Disable K-Boost.#7 Shadowplay is enabled inside geforce experience. Fix: Disable shadowplay inside geforce experience OR completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)

I can pretty much confirm that it was a thermal paste issue at this point. The thermal paste that was applied at the factory wasn't covering the GPU die properly, which was thankfully solved with Arctic MX-4. https://imgur.com/a/iQfDF

Was wondering what pad thickness you went with? Im going to do this, just to do it. Also have mx-4. Going to use fujipoly pads. Just needed to know for sure what size to get. Or are there multiple sizes or just one size? Would you happen to know the specs/brand of pads evga uses? Im assuming theyre not as good as fujipoly? Thanks

Closes thing I could find was this from the FAQ Answer / SolutionThis FAQ is only in regards to Geforce 10 series thermal mod. In most cases, thermal pads used by EVGA are 1mm in thickness. This would include all VRAM thermal pads. 1080/1070 FTW: Baseplate (Narrow) Pad: 26mm x 110mm x 1mm +/-0.1mm thickness Backplate (Wide) Pad: 58mm x 110mm x 2mm +/-0.1mm thickness Non-FTW, Non-Classified, Non-Black Edition: Baseplate (Narrow) Pad: 26mm x 93.4mm x 1.5mm +/-0.1mm thickness Backplate (Wide) Pad: 58mm x 93.4mm x 2mm +/-0.1mm thickness For more information on the EVGA thermal mod please visit https://www.evga.com/thermalmod/Question / Issue What size are the thermal pads for the thermal mod?

I would ditch that mx-4 ( https://www.arctic.ac/us_en/mx-4.html) and go with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut That link above made me laugh "Better then Liquid Metal" ha. They didn't even list and thermal specs

A google search for mx-4 thermal conductivity resault: The MX-4 from Arctic Cooling is listed first and shows that this new compound keeps the same thermal conductivity of 8.5 W/mK as did the MX-3. Viscosity is at 870 Poise for the MX-4, which is a little less than the MX-3, but a little more than what MX-2 offers. Jul 6, 2010
TG Kryonaut is 12.5w /mk

Yeah i was looking at that. I read several forums claiming it gets worse over time though. Thats why i never used it. I like tinkering with my compy though and will give it a shot for both gpu and cpu.
Ive seen the breakdown of the ftw3 but cant guage how much thermal pad i will need?

I am at work now, hard for me to look that up. Look at some tear down videos and pictures to count pads versus the quote I made above which has the dimensions

No worries. Think i'll just take it apart and measure everything. Theres no rush, was just hoping i could get it all ordered today and get it tomorrow. I have some arctic pads at various thicknesses and will test fit which ones will work. 2mm seems way too thick, as seeing on the teardown how squished they look. Thanks again! Cant seem to post link from my phone, but theres a post on here where Sajin states this. Wondering where Sajin got that info "evga pads are 1w/mk"!? I know changing the pads seems unnecessary, but im going to have it apart anyways, so i might as well. And if 1w/mk is true... Srsly what the heck evga!?

Lol where did evga jacob get that from? Im not saying it isnt true, im just curious as to where he got the specs from, thats all.
Apart from my lazy googling, im assuming he called them and asked. I cant seem to find the specs. Its not a big deal, obviously any pad is better than 1w/mk.
I was just curious to the w/mk spec source. Thanks 😁
