Mandrake96 I have a problem with my Nvidia GTS 360 M. After installing driver 301.42 when I play videogames suddenly different weird squared pixels appear. When I use other programs there are no problems, these things appear only in games. I tried to unistall and reinstall the drivers following your guide and I also used older drivers. Should I try to delete Nvidia display registry entries? How can I post a screenshot of my games to show you the problem? I'm new. Thanks. Welcome to the EVGA forums Yes, it sounds like the newer driver isnt working well for your laptop. I suggest uninstalling your current driver (as noted) in the control panel and reboot, then simply reinstall your old driver. Nothing fancy, no file deletions and no registry clean needed. This thread is primarly for desktop computers and stand alone graphics cards. Laptop graphics chipsets are always problematic when using any driver above what came installed. The best suggestion for a "newer" driver, is to check your laptops home driver page and -not- use anything that is not listed there. Sorry I cannot be of more help

stomtapa i am using MSI Afterburner for overclocking,i already tried that couple of times.so now i tried it for 1 more time and it's the same, nothing new. i also tried the overclock with Rivatunrer but it didn't help. With such a older card without much horsepower, I highly suggest you run the card only stock. The 260 is a very old design and does NOT overclock like modern cards....

but isn't it weird that on benchmarks everything is working well but on games it doesn't work well? even people with older cards than mine manage to overclock their cards and they don't have any problems....

stomtapa but isn't it weird that on benchmarks everything is working well but on games it doesn't work well? even people with older cards than mine manage to overclock their cards and they don't have any problems.... As you described... My overclock works well for benchmarks, but in games my performance is the same or even less. This is because modern games contain DX versions your card does not support and your number of shader cores and VRam is extremely limited. Heaven and Vantage benchmarks are designed to run on most cards, unlike games which have set horsepower and resource requirements. Pushing a older card to higher clocks can generate better benchmark numbers, but your cards DX, shader counts and Vram is the true limiter of what settings can or cannot be run and what the framerates will be. It certainly could also be from using shader and memory settings methods that are incorrect. Your card is so old, that anything you read today about clocking does not really apply to your card, as your card clocks differently in behavior. If overclocking your card makes game performance go down, then why stress the card by doing so? If you dead set on overclocking, I suggest you leave the memory and shaders completly alone and just try and concentrate on core clocks. This will provide 98% of your performance increases. *Remember to keep a very close eye on the temps, and do not forget that overclocking on such a old card is likey to shorten its lifespan.

Hey man great article. Unfortunately, part of my problem (besides those mentioned here, unless I missed it), is that it says on my Device Manager for Display Adapter (which is currently set at Standard VGA Graphics): This Device Cannot Start. In fact, when I try re-starting after a failed NVDIA installer (using your instructional) sometimes when it reboots it says "Device was unsuccessful at installation" or something like that. Does this have anything to do with this process? I'm currently trying to upgrade to GE Force GT610 from a burnt out GE Force 8600 GT.

Hi maniacvvv, thanks for the great guide. Initially joined up (coupla days back) to ask a question about reinstalling an NVidia audio driver, which you answered and pointed me here. Just read through this thread and realized I may have screwed up another NVidia setup. The new EVGA GTX560 that I asked you about, replaced a Palit GTS 250. I plonked this old card into another system and did the included driver install, no problem. Then I went to NVidia and grabbed what I thought was the latest driver for the GTS250. Installed, rebooted and my XPPSP3 system suddenly had a 256 color display, with no sign of the new NVidia driver. Shucks. So I think I need to follow your instructions to the letter. My question: I note that page 1 of this thread is around a year old: Has anything changed since then? Regards and thanks :-)

For such a old XP system, the latest drivers might cause a problem. Lets see what version you used, then I can suggest another choice for you

That's kind of you. The name of the NVidia file is: 301.42-desktop-winxp-32bit-english-whql.exe Display properties say version 6.14.13.142 - date 15/5/2012 If it matters, the Palit GTS 250's BIOS is 62.92.9A.00.00 The XPPSP3 machine isn't a Dell - it's one of my builds. Mobo is Asus P5GD1 Pro with 3G ram. Cheers :-)

Also use only mouse and keyboard connected when trying the install and reboot. Any PS2 connected devices? If that still does not work, I suggest trying Nvidia driver 266.58 (below are shown what is available for that config) *I would stick with the signed drivers *Note: 266.58 is a older driver, so be sure to follow the correct uninstalling steps and use only a custom/clean install (as noted in the guide, problems moving between older drivers (old installer) and newer drivers (new install process) can occur if done improperly)

Hi Maniacvvv, this is a great support. I have followed all the steps but am having an issue with Windows automatically installing what it thinks is an appropriate driver on restart. Note that i am not connected to the internet so it is not downloading and installing, it is just installing. I have trawled the web to disable this but no joy - any ideas? Would safe mode disable this automatic installation? Many thanks for your help.

Pick the "Device Installation Settings" button This will open the panel you need to -disable- Windows from trying to install a Driver for your videocard Remember to save the settings change, and that will stop Windows from trying to install a driver.

Hi, It seems that no matter what I do, when I reboot, Windows auto installs a 660 Ti driver. I have: -switched off my internet -disabled windows update driver install -deleted the NVIDIA driver extraction folder from my PC And it still keeps coming back! Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the EVGA forums Your issue could be one on a few things... First that you are not running a primary Admin account -or- Second that its not really installing a Nvidia driver, its just installing the Standard VGA adapter software. I suggest that after you see it "install", go to the Control Panel/Programs and Features and look for a Nvidia "Graphics Driver". If you dont see that, no Nvidia driver was installed. As for Admin rights and disabling driver installs at StartUp, check this post http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1721462

Yes, there's nothing in the Control Panel. Thanks for this. I thought incorrect could have been causing me problems as I've been having a few Blue Screen errors, but as it turns out, I've got a faulty stick of RAM. Thanks once again, will no doubt come in handy when it comes time to update the drivers.

To buy a "new" laptop with a really good Nvidia GPU costs over $2000 and thats not worth it. If you really want higher end Nvidia GPU power, a desktop computer and a Nvidia graphics card is much cheaper
