Thank you so much for replying!

My monitor's resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels.
The refresh rate is 60 Hz.
Color depth is Highest (32-bit).
The native value is 800 x 600.

The monitor I'm using is a really old local brand which was just lying around at my place. Need to replace it with a better one. But right now my biggest problem is, that most videos seem to stream ok, but some, like the TED videos don't. So is that a driver issue and should I uninstall and reinstall the driver again? Also, I played some youtube vids and the video is playing ok (other than the occasional blurred bottom), but some (though not all) of the songs are sounding a bit 'metallic', and not like before. Could this have anything to do with the HD Audio Driver? The window that popped up after installation said that the Nvidia update and HD Audio Driver didn't install and the Nvidia update components failed, but the files are all present in the Nvidia folder in the C: drive. (I have no idea why screenshots are not getting attached here.)

Anyway, do guide me. I'm a bit daunted with the whole process of uninstalling and reinstalling. But if the HD audio driver and all that stuff which seems to be lying in the C Drive can do some damage to the system then I'll definitely to an uninstall and custom install.

Thanks again, for taking the time out to reply!

Dont worry about what is in the Nvidia folder, that is just where the installers are unpacked.

To known what components really DID install, go to the Control Panel (Windows XP) and look at the Add/Remove Programs list...

Can you maybe find a make and model number on that monitor? That way I can look up its specs.

Please go here http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
And try updating your Adobe Flash player to the latest version (you need this for the new driver you put in)

Please report back after updating the Flash player and see if you can find the model number on that monitor bro

Hi, Maniacvvv, thank you for replying!

My monitor is an ancient one called Samtron. The model number is 56V, I think. That's the only number written on it. It was a slapdash temporary arrangement when my Samsung monitor conked off, and I've just been procrastinating buying a new one. I hope its specs are available online, though I doubt if the company still exists.

Also you're right. The Nvidia update components and the HD Audio drivers are absent from the Add or Remove Programs list.

About the Adobe Flash Player: I use Chrome and every time I go the Flash download page, it says I already have the latest version of Flash automatically built in and updated within Chrome itself. I've tried downloading it again via Firefox, and every time the file downloads and gets installed in the Downloads folder, but when I open the folder itself, the Player file is nowhere to be seen. It is not present in the Add or Remove programs list either. (However the Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin is in that list - which, I believe, is not the same?.) I've tried downloading the player from different websites but the same process repeats itself. The AVG Firewall hasn't blocked it either. Also, some time back I removed a lot of programs to make space in my comp and at that time both the Adobe Flash Player and the Player 11 plugin were present in the Add or Remove Programs list. But the video streaming problems were continuing nevertheless.

Thanks for being so generous with your help. Looking forward to your reply

LOL, Samtron is what Samsung used to be called.......
That CRT monitor is from 2000

If your using Chrome, then you do have the latest Flash and dont have to worry about it at all.

About all I can suggest is trying the last driver for that monitor
Go here http://download.cnet.com/SAMTRON-56E-57E-56V/3000-2108_4-141200.html
download the driver to the desktop, unzip it and run the installer. Reboot
Now open the Nvidia control panel and see what it says for "Native" screen res

Hi Maniacvvv, thanks for the reply!

Yeah that monitor is from the dinosaur era!

Anyway, I downloaded the driver and restarted the comp as you advised. The 'native' bit is still 800 x 600.

Also the problem with the TED videos still remains. The screen still blacks out and nothing's changed. :-(

Also, the problem of videos not streaming and this blurry line below youtube vids was present even in the earlier Samsung monitor, before I started using this one from Back to the Future.

So maybe it's not a monitor issue? Anyway, you're the boss! Do tell me what I should do next, and thanks for taking the time out to reply!

Hi maniacvvv,
Thanks for providing this really useful, up to date and very detailed Nvidia driver uninstall/install guide.

This has made updating my graphics drivers for my 2x GTX 580 and 2x my GTX 480 simpler and much more reliable.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks.

Driver fusion is just released... I have not used it and cannot comment on the program at this time.
Given what I just read at the site, its doubtful I would install the program myself until I have heard from others who have done so....
I really dont trust the way using the program is setup.

As for the NVTray, its not needed at all. Simply right click anywhere on the desktop to access the NVCP

Hello maniacvvv,

I've been having issues with terrible FPS (Frames Per Second) when playing some of my games such as Batlefield 3 and Skyrim. I've only been having these issues after removing and cleaning several sirefef trojans on my laptop (Windows 7 64-Bit).

It was only after the sirefef-cleaning process that I've noticed that my games were lagging dramatically (Average of 15 - 20 FPS). It's because of this that I decided to reinstall my NVIDIA drivers.....however I've made one grave mistake: uninstalling the NVIDIA "Graphics Driver" and not the other NVIDIA drivers like the PhysX and 3D vision first. I only noticed that this was a huge mistake after reading your extensive guide to installing/uninstalling NVIDIA drivers.

Currently there is still one NVIDIA driver left inside of my laptop, that being the "NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.12.0604" which strangely cannot be uninstalled. I've also tried installing the latest driver for my GeoForce GT 540M, however the installer keeps failing.

What steps would I need to undertake in order to resolve this problem?

Thank You very much for your help.

Welcome to the EVGA forums

Caught me just before bed bro... check back tomorrow and I'll have the time to lookup what driver came with that PhysX. Then you can try and install it (and rebuild the registry links).
Laptops can be tricky, I would rather post up in the morning after a cup of coffee so I get it right

Sometime after 9am (PST) I should have a post up for you.... sorry its been a very long day and I'm beat.

That's perfectly fine :)

Oh and I should also make note of several things. Before you replied to me, I restarted my computer and managed to install the latest driver for my laptop (although the PhysX driver wasn't updated). I performed a custom installation for the new driver as well as ensuring I performed a clean install.

Even with my drivers updated, my games are still lagging. I'm not sure if the clean install made things worse or changed nothing. The frame rates when playing Battlefield 3 (Offline Campaign) are now an average of 12 frames per second. I can imagine that the FPS when playing Multiplayer online would be just as bad.

Would the lag-issue be a result of the clean install of the latest NVIDIA driver or would it be because of the sirefef-trojan-removal process that was completed prior to the NVIDIA driver clean install?

I'm considering performing a factory format, however I prefer to leave that as a last resort.

Really appreciate the time you've taken on these driver issues.

Maybe just an update for what's changed recently?

Has anything gotten better with the driver installs?

The latest driver I could get to install for my GTX-580 was 270.61.

I've tried up to 290.53 a while back, but gave up.  They just wouldn't install even after DriverSweeper, etc.

I'm having an issue with AfterEffects CS6 which they say is a driver issue, so ... I'd like to try it again.

BTW - how is the replacement for DriverSweeper (Driver Fusion) working?  Is it a solid product?

Yeah, CS6 needs the latest drivers...
-->270.61 is going to cause alot of issues (more and more as time goes on), you NEED to update.

Please PM me and I will personally help you get 301.42 installed and working correctly

Thanks for the guide.
One tip I would like to add (excuse me if it's already been posted)
I have a lot of icons on my desktop and every driver uninstall forced me to have to rearrange my desktop icon layout until I installed a small program that will save and restore your layout.
Hope it helps.

I've tried up to 290.53 a while back, but gave up.  They just wouldn't install even after DriverSweeper, etc.

Unfortunately I'm having the same problem with both a GTX 460 SC and a GTX 570 on my machine running WinXP Pro 32-bit (SP3). Neither will accept a driver later than 270.61.  BUT when I install the cards on my other machine (running Window 7 Home 64-bit), they accept the latest drivers (301.42) with no problem.

I did notice something interesting that may indicate part of the problem:  the NVIDIA control panel would not uninstall when following the posted uninstall procedure.  BUT I have been able (sometimes) to get it to disappear after using the uninstall procedure AND using the latest driver sweeper, Driver Fusion.  BUT, even after that, the latest video drivers STILL fail to install.  Something is clearly wacky about my WinXP machine and I would greatly appreciate any help you folks could give.  Here are a few of the system specs:

Asus P5N-SLI motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.67GHz CPU
2GB DDR2 Corsair @ 667MHz RAM
EVGA GTX460 SC video card (connected to 2 Acer P235H monitors)
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE
Two 250GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 drives
Corsair TX750W PSU

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE
Two 250GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 drives
Corsair TX750W PSU

The major issue that effects drivers over 270.61 is a -total- change in the driver installer with series 280.xx.
270.61 uses the Windows Installer, later drivers are using a custom Nvidia installer (Nvidia no longer uses the Windows Installer)

Aside from some known issues like RAID card drivers, PS2 connected devices (for some releases over 270.61) the primary install failures appear to be caused by conflicts with installed existing software/drivers.
These issues appear to be caused by older softwares and drivers, including AV products and desktop mods and also possibly older devices and their drivers.

When attempting to install, it is critical to disable or uninstall as much as possible for the -cleanest- boot to the desktop possible, before attempting the Nvidia install.
It is also suggested to unplug all attached devices except for the mouse and keyboard, and also use only -one- monitor attached during the driver install.
*Due to -known- installer bugs that have been patched out by Nvidia, it is suggested to only attempt to install the "latest" signed drivers. At this time that is 301.42.

Maniac - thanks for your help on the phone the other nite.  Sometimes the magic just doesn't work though, oh well.

When searching today, I noticed something odd.  I found two separate threads where they had installed a relatively new nVidia driver from the device manager.

What am I missing?  I thought that drivers could no longer be updated thru the device manager?

Thanks!

When searching today, I noticed something odd.  I found two separate threads where they had installed a relatively new nVidia driver from the device manager.

http://www.sevenforums.co...ils-2.html#post1848565

What am I missing?  I thought that drivers could no longer be updated thru the device manager?

Thanks!

Its certainly worth a try
*Remember to create a system restore point -before- attempting it though.
Nvidia release notes only exclude -uninstalling-, as that no longer works correctly. So you will have to uninstall as we did the other night, reboot to the normal desktop and attempt it.

So, if I install using the device manager, I lose the ability to use 'add remove programs' to un-install?

But, DriverSweeper in safe mode, should be able to accomplish the same thing? Right?

And this would install the nVidia control panel, and then I'd install PhysX on its own (it has its own installer, right?)

As I don't use system restore, I'll probably want to create an image from two different imaging companies before I attempt it - or maybe turn System Restore on just to try that.  Is 'System Restore' infallible - or can it cause problems?

BTW - also found a video for those with cards that aren't recognized by the nVidia installer (that is not my problem), but ... it might help someone else:

No, if they go in you should be able to use add/remove as normal.

I got a reply from an nVidia bug report I submitted today (encouraging, I didn't think I'd hear back from them).

The suggested in addition to creating the -loglevel:6 log, to try the following (which seems to involve installing while in safe mode?)??

1.First download and install the Revo Uninstaller from here: http://www.revouninstaller.com/. There is a 30 days trial period.
2. Restart windows in Safe mode with networking. You can do this by hitting the F8 key before Windows starts which will give you some boot options. Select to start in Safe mode with networking from the list.
3. Once in Windows launch the Revo Uninstaller tool.
4. Uninstall all NVIDIA entries. There should be a few and they all should start with "NVIDIA....".
5. After each one you uninstall, Revo will give you option to scan for additional registry entry. Do the scan for each component and then select all the additional left-over registry entries and delete them all. This way all traces of all NVIDIA components will be removed.
6. Navigate to "C:\Program Files" and delete the "NVIDIA Corporation" folder if it exists.
7. Navigate to "C:\Program Files (x86)" and delete the "NVIDIA Corporation" folder if it exists
8. Restart windows in Safe mode with networking again. If windows detect new hardware and prompt to install driver then cancel if you can but if not then allow it to proceed and complete first. Restart Windows in Safe mode with networking again if prompted, otherwise proceed to next step.
9. Re-install the 301.42 driver. When installing the driver, select the "Custom (Advanced)" install option and then put a checkmark in the "Perform clean install" checkbox.

--- my questions ------
1. I thought your guide stated that the new drivers would no longer install in safe mode?  Did I mis-read something?

2. The RevoUninstaller tool is unknown to me?  Is this their idea of a replacement for DriverSweeper?  Are you familiar with this?

Thanks!!!

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Guide for Uninstalling and Installing driversets 2012/08/11 15:32:26 (permalink)
WOW! Amazing work! Thanks a lot man!

A few questions:
  1. I have a GeForce 330M graphics card, is it the same idea? Coz I saw you have 'a Guide for 200 400 & 500' series cards...
  2. I have trouble install/uninstall the NVIDIA physX thing, this entry is in my <programs and Features>, but nothing happens after clicking the uninstall button in control panel. I'd like to install a newer version of that, but seems NVIDIA detect that I have the same or newer version installed, which I know is probably not true.
  3. After I uninstalled my old drivers and stuff... I went into my C drive and deleted all those NVIDIA folders, I was hopping to get a fresh, fresh new driver. but afterwards I notice that those folders/files weren't supposed to be deleted. Any additional fix I need to perform? if I already trashed those files.
Thank you for all the questions!

Welcome to the EVGA Forums

You dont have a graphics card, you have a graphics "chipset"
-ONLY- Special "VERDE" notebook drivers are to be used on such a config.
Below is the driver list for a Nvidia 330m "VERDE" notebook drivers (for users running Win7 64bit)

I suggest downloading the Nvidia 296.10 VERDE Driver
Just run the installer in CUSTOM MODE and install only the Graphics driver and PhysX.
*Make -SURE- you check the box for a "Clean Install"

Hopefully the should fix you up

Hi,

I tried to follow your suggestion uninstall/install my driver. I can't figure out how to uninstall the physX from Nvidia tho. Then I use customer installation to reinstall only my graphics card driver and the physX, still it says "a new or the same version of physX is already installed on your machine" something like that. I know you mentioned it's a known bug, but is there any way to get around it and properly install the latest physX?

Thanks for help!!!!

Its quite possible you -have- the "latest" version, if your previous driver had the same one.
Remember not every driver has a new PhysX version that comes with it, sometimes 3-4 driversets come out using the same one.

I would not worry about it at all, unless your having problems
