Re:A guide for Installing and Uninstalling Nvidia Drivers for 200, 400 and 500 series card 2012/02/28 15:58:26 (permalink)
That is a great tutorial and I really appreciate the time and detail you spent on it! I spent about an hour last night following your suggestions and after the install and final reboot, I still ended up with a black screen...I am completely stumped at this point and way frustrated! I realize that this may not be the appropriate forum for my issue, but your knowledge on the subject seems like you might be able to point me in the right direction. Any help you can offer is appreciated. Here is what I am working with:

ASUS ET2400I
3.20ghz Core I5 - 650
8gb DDR3
Win 7 Pro 64 bit
Nvidia G310M

I have tried multiple drivers without success...always get the black screen after reboot. I had just done a fresh install of Win 7 and this graphics problem is my only issue...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to the EVGA forums

Your Asus ET2400I computer is a "all in one" completely integrated unit with a built-in touch screen interface.

You should not be attempting to use a downloaded driver on such a complex unit.
-->All kinds of unforseen issues can occur with such a system, and you should -only- be getting driver downloads from Asus for that unit
The last Nvidia driver for your device and OS, is dated June of last year
 http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ET2400I&p=26&os

I highly suggest you use -only- the device software and drivers from the Asus site listed for that unit.
Lets us hope you used your Asus backup OS image when reinstalling, as the config for your device is unlikely to be supported off a retail OS disk.

I would read or download the manual for your device and consider contacting Asus if you still have issues, as that computer/device requires a very specific config setup and OS/driver install.

Re:A guide for Installing and Uninstalling Nvidia Drivers for 200, 400 and 500 series card 2012/02/28 21:46:40 (permalink)
Thanks for the response! Let me clarify a few things:

1) The computer is a business refurb that came without an OS installed, but did previously have Win 7 Pro 64 bit on it. So I have no back up disks at all...

2) I did start with the drivers directly from the ASUS site, but experienced the same issues.

3) The model is listed on the bottom of the unit as ET2400I. When I go to the ASUS site and use their auto detect it says it's a ET2400INT-G. And when I use the serial number to detect the model it comes back with ET2400INT. So that's is 3 completely different configurations! The last two both use the same graphics driver and share most of the same specs, but the first ET2400I has additional features that mine does not - Bluetooth & dual graphics adapters, Intel & Nvidia.

So perhaps your last bit of advice is where I should start - with ASUS support. I just dread dealing with them...

Thanks again for your advice!

Words cannot describe how much I appreciate your guide. I was stuck with the default driver from back in 2009 after failing to install the newest driver (295.73) for about a week. My main use for my computer is to play starcraft quite seriously, skyrim, and league of legends. When this happened I couldnt play skyrim without HORRIBLE lag and starcraft was also laggy. I spent a week trying to figure it out on my own until I came across your guide and I had it fixed in a half hour. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this and help everyone out. LOVE YOU. -Adam

Nice work bro.

I have always used this method.

download new driver
save on desktop
go to remove programs and remove all the drivers from nvidia
then do a search for other nvidia files and delete them
reboot into safe mode and use the newest version of driver sweeper and remove graphic drivers
reboot into the computer and and do a clean install of the new drivers. done.

I have never had a issue doing it this way.

Hi. I just recently installed new Drivers(296.10) for the gtx 500 series Windows 7 64 bit. I followed your guide step by step and everything worked flawlessly, thank you. One problem, now my pc is not producing any sound threw my monitor.
I've already tried uninstalling and re installing the audio drivers both threw the motherboard disc and plain windows automatically downloading them, Neither worked. I've also tried updating the driver from my Mb website, also did not work.

Im not them most computer savvy person, and am really confused on how a display driver switch could have a effect on audio, besides the fact that a hdmi cable is the only thing connecting my monitor to the pc and probably dont have to tell you that its plugged into the grahics card. I'm really frustrated and could use any help you can give me.

Welcome to the EVGA Forums

So you had a "previous" driver installed and it was working fine with your HDMI cable to your Monitor with speakers.

You then followed the Guide and clean installed the new driver

Question, with you "previous" driver did you have the Nvidia HD Audio driver installed or not?
When you uninstalled in the Control Panel, was there an entry of Nvidia HD Audio?

OK, then I belive that is the problem.
Please use the -exact- same driver version, then simply run the installer (you do NOT need to uninstall first). Run the installer in Custom mode, but this time CHECK the Nvidia HD Audio along with the Graphics Driver and PhysX. It is very important the you also check "Clean Install".

This should fix you right up, and your monitor speakers should work again

* I will have to edit my guide to make the section on HD Audio use more clear.
In your case you were using it, thats why when you installed without them it stopped working.

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Guide for Uninstalling and Installing driversets 2012/04/05 19:57:44 (permalink)
I've got a GTX 560 ti, and I've been using the 275.33 version since July with no issues.

Since trying to install a second HDD yesterday, my graphics driver has been crashing constantly. I found your guide, and started following it. After uninstalling the graphics driver, the screen went dark, without giving me an option to restart. So I restarted manually. Windows started to download a Video controller(vga compatible) driver. Cool beans. Windows wanted to dl an nvidia driver but thanks to your instructions, it was thwarted. Windows asked for a restart, I obliged, and after restarting, before the login screen, a bland noise came through the speakers and droned on. And the screen froze. So I restart again. Install 296.10. Restart. Log-in. Moment of truth........it's GOLDEN!

Two days of incredible stress have been (at least momentarily) relieved. I haven't tried playing any games yet (which was the reason I originally rolled back), but I'm happy just to have basic access to my computer. Thank you for putting the effort into this guide.

Did you follow the setps for turning OFF automatic Windows Updates?
*Unpluging your internet will NOT stop Windows Updates from using the Driver Store files. You must change the Windows Update settings as noted in the Guide.
Are you logged into Windows using the Primary Administrator (Admin) account?

So far so good! I had one hangup where the screen cut out for a couple seconds and I got that "driver has stopped responding and recovered itself" once, but no other issues. All my games are running fine and nothing has crashed.

Admittedly, I haven't touched the one game(Dragon Age 2) that originally caused me to drop 296.10 for 275.33 back in July, but everything else checks out.

As long as the "Standard VGA adaptor" installs (without a failure notice), just go ahead with the driver install
a reboot is not needed

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Guide for Uninstalling and Installing driversets 2012/04/30 06:56:10 (permalink)
First off, thank you for the excellent guide!

I'm actually running into an issue with my GTX 460 which I think is driver related. My computer froze up on Saturday while I was surfing the internet, forcing me to do a hard reset. Unfortunately, after I performed the reset, I could no longer bring up Windows 7 64-bit normally, I would just get a blank screen after the "Starting Windows" splash screen and my system would then hang-up, forcing another hard restart.

So after spending a day troubleshooting, I tried switching over to my onboard graphics card, and of course, I was then able to bring up Windows properly. This makes me believe that my Nvidia drivers got corrupted when my computer froze, so I'm trying to see if I deleting my current drivers and starting from a fresh state would help. Since I could still bring up Safe Mode when using my Nvidia card, I don't think the whole graphics card is fried. It certainly doesn't help that during my troubleshooting, I tried rolled back my graphics driver using Device Manager (I know, bad idea), so now my Add/Remove Programs displays a different version of the driver than what's showing up in Device Manager >_<.

So I guess what I'm asking is for some advice as to how I should go about uninstalling the drivers. I was thinking the best way, is to uninstall the driver with Add/Remove Programs like you suggested and then running Driver Sweeper afterwards (btw, would you recommend using Driver Sweeper in this case), but I'm not sure if I should do anything about the Driver in Device Manager (like I said, I tried a roll back and it now it displays a different version). Should I just not touch the Device Manager version, period? In other words, will doing all the other things fix the Driver in Device Manager?

Any help would be appreciated!

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Guide for Uninstalling and Installing driversets 2012/04/30 08:07:17 (permalink)

Good morning and welcome to the EVGA forums

Yeah, I would follow the guide...
Get the Nvidia driver you want installed downloaded onto the desktop, shutdown any monitoring software like Precision/Afterburner (and disable the Start with Windows if you have it setup that way). Get driversweeper installed and updated. Turn OFF Windows Updates as noted in the Guide....
Now (making sure you are logged into the Primary Admin user account), go into the Windows Control Panel and uninstall the Nvidia driver components with Add/Remove Programs as posted in the guide and (after the graphics driver uninstall asks for a restart) Reboot into "SafeMode" then run Driver Sweeper for "Nvidia display drivers" and "Nvidia PhysX". After Driversweeper is done, reboot into the BIOS and disable the onboard graphics, save changes and exit into a normal boot.
*Do NOT mess around with the Device Manager, make no changes there.

If you make it to the desktop, then proceed to install the Nvidia driver as shown in the guide.

If you dont make onto the desktop, dont panic
Shutdown, then open the case and check all connections to the card (power and monitor), try pulling the card out and re-seating it into the slot. Check the card, if its dusty and dirty, give it a good aircan clean before putting it back in.

If after all that you still having problems, please post back here and we will have to do more troubleshooting.

Goodluck bro

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Tried your suggestions last night, but I think I may have run into an issue. When attempting to uninstall the HD Audio Driver or the Graphics Driver itself, and then rebooting, my system would automatically tried to install a new Nvidia driver (I had Windows Update set to the setting you recommended). It would do this even if I had my internet disconnected, and even though I had deleted the previous drivers from my Nvidia folder. It would even do this despite the fact that I was using my onboard Video Card, and would even do it in Safe Mode (I even got a BSOD when I attempted to reboot after one of those installations >_<). Eventually, I just kept uninstalling the drivers Windows would keep installing (in normal mode), until it eventually gave me messages that it "failed" the install. I then checked Add/Remove Programs and saw no more Nvidia drivers, so I rebooted into safe mode and used Driver Sweeper.

After rebooting again, I still didn't see any other drivers in my Add/Remove Programs menu, however, if I go to Device Manager, under Display Drivers, I shows an Ati Radion driver (for my onboard graphics) and a Nvidia 460 driver with a yellow exclamation mark there, telling me Windows failed to install the driver.

Should I be concerned by any of the weird stuff that's going on? Like Windows attempting to reinstall drivers until it eventually failed, the BSOD, and the leftover Nvidia Driver in Device Manager? I haven't yet tried to fully switch over to my Nvidia card. Though I tested disconnecting my onboard vga and connecting my nvidia to my monitor and get a totally blank screen right out of the gate (admittingly, I still have it set in my BIOS to treat the onboard VGA as my Initial Display; I thought it would still detect my nvidia card if it was the only thing connected to my monitor).

Thanks for any additional help you can give!
