Maybe the rush for the 3080 10GB is a blessing in disguise for people who didn't get one, might be worth the wait. I see several articles about this.

Kinda looks like there are a couple of 2080 Supers listed there too.

Yeah that one looks interesting.  It is the counter to big navi and its 16gb.

So, how does the step-up program work? If I secure a FTW3 3080 Ultra 10GB from EVGA (even if it's from Newegg), can I step up to the 20GB version at a future date and just pay the difference?

Hard to say what the options will be between now and then.

What sucks is not knowing when any of these options are going to land.  And if the, say, 3080 Super replaces the 3080 at the same price or is a 3080TI for way more.  It's good to have options i guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why even bother with releasing the 10gb 3080 then?

Sell limited quantity 10GB, make profit, discontinue them within a week and sell nothing but 20GB cards, watch the 10GB cards be sold by the same people that paid $1,500 for them, for $500 on ebay and then they go buy the 20GB cards for $2,000.

I always knew there was going to be a 20gb version or something in that sense. Why else would nvidia leave such a big gap between 3080 and 3090 price wise. if I had to speculate, it will probably be release a month or 2 after Navi. They are waiting for red team to show their stuff and respond. Red team is showing their stuff end of October, so earliest launch for them would be mid November. So if you are will to wait, nvidia will show their 20gb variant earliest mid December if we are lucky. But I think it will be after the new year. As for the 3090, if you are willing to pay the price, you are basically paying for an early release of 3080ti/super 20gb minus 5-10% performance.

LOL, yes -- but you will be left with a bunch of really pissed of 10GB customers. I guess Nvidia knows how greasy & obsessed most of their customers are and they just don't care, they'll sell through regardless. Crazy times we live in...

I have heard rumors that there would be a 20GB version at some point, I guess the rumors are getting reinforced here (even though I wouldn't be skeptical of a 20GB version at some point regardless, it makes sense after all.)

It was said during The Gamer Nexus 3080 live benchmarking session that the 10 GB isn’t even going to be utilized to the fullest potential not even within the next 2 to 3 years. It’s good to see the new cards, as it makes people mouths water, THINKING they need more

There are already games that take 10+ GB of VRAM in 4k. (FS2020)

The mitigating tech that isn’t being discussed (currently) is the speed of GDDR6X+PCIe4 and the memory compression.

I personally think the on-board 10GB combined with the new tech will be good for quite a while.

As much as I respect gamer nexus. I think he is extremely knowledgeable and truthful in his reviews and such. But there are no way in knowing what developers will use vrams wise in games the next few years. Already there has been a few games close to reaching 10gb of rams usage(very few), but to say we wont be using it in the next 2-3 years is being able to tell the future. I think 10gb is good for under 4k. But with 4k and up, I think having something like 14-16 would be much better. But yeah, definitely research on what you need and not buy it because its the newest shiniest thing out there.

I'd rather have a 3090 "lite" with 12GB and a reasonable price tag.  Nvidia PLS!

So, how does the step-up program work? If I secure a FTW3 3080 Ultra 10GB from EVGA (even if it's from Newegg), can I step up to the 20GB version at a future date and just pay the difference?

Full details here: https://www.evga.com/support/stepup/

Basic gist - register the card within 14 days of purchase, then you have 90 days from the date of purchase to step up.

To add on to this in a tldr fashion:

The card has to be an upgrade in some manner.
1. If its just the same card but with a new cooler, no.
2. Sameish card with higher clock speed (bios type upgrade), no.
3. New card with more memory upgrade, good to upgrade.
4. New product line (2080 -> TI), good to upgrade.

Good to know, thanks, brother. So 10GB to 20GB would work, assuming it was in a 90 day time frame.

seems like it would be better to upgrade to the latest parts that come out within the first 90 days from your purchase. with the EVGA Step-Up program. then pay $1,500 for them, and sale them for $500 on ebay why would anyone do that?

There's no need to be pissed. It's unlikely you'll ever use 20 gigs of vram, and we're talking about someone who is already sitting at 4k gaming. A ton of people who want 3080s aren't even gaming at 4k

Even then, it's not like the game is just going to explode in your face and burn your house down. In theoretical situations, you might get performance decrease or have to turn down a few options in those 1% of games.

Tons of people will be more than happy. ****, people are still happily gaming today on 1080tis and it's a 4 year old card.

what is see is tiers by resolution:

2070          - 1k on ultra settings
2080 10Gb -  2k on ultra settings
2080 20Gb -  4k on ultra settings
2090          -  8k

I find this list rather neat and comprehensible even for non-nerd customers.
I could communicate this to my grandma and she would understand this.

And it will help sell my 2080 10gb to a 1440p user.

And can I extend my warranty period?

Uhm, I've been playing games in 4K since the 1060, but sure. lol Not at 120 FPS on newer games, but still. That's a pretty poor chart imo

I'm gonna guess 6-12 months from now, all dependent on AMD.

What would be really funny is, if the 10GB GPUs were actually bait for scalpers so the consumer can than grab a 20GB version with a slight performance increase not long after.  Just a thought.

Use this Associate Code at your checkouts or follow these instructions for Up to 10% OFF on all your EVGA purchases:

YEAH after the "super" stunt in 2000 gen this was expected.
nVidia at its finest.

deep down we all knew this was going to happen with a gap so wide between the 10GB version on the 3080 and the 24GB on the 3090. it was obvious!

I also believe NVIDIA is going to carefully watch the AMD GPU release and then decide if they need to change their marketing strategy.
