thollis89 just curious, my rma already shipped or is atleast in the shipping phase, but it has the same 2986 model number as my broken one? are they going to have the same model numbers on both the fixed and broken ones?
If they are shipping you another 980 FTW, then yes the model number will be the same. Sometimes the serial number isn't updated either, with my second card I had to enter the new serial manually. Regarding the clocks, I don't think it's the clock speeds that were causing the crashes, was that the case, you couln't stop the crashes by just enabling DSR.

I also dont think that the clocks are the main reason for the issue of the FTW series. There could be a problem with voltage control, the cooling of some parts or another faulty part on the board, the higher clocks will only raise the tendency of failures. Like i already mentioned, 1380Mhz boost isnt that high, that nearly all FTW cards will show the same error, and this chips are advertised as selectet. But this is only my personal supposition.

That's best option for you guys, step up from GTX980 FTW to GTX980Ti, that mid range to premium model for 100$. Did you notice difference GTA V 2560x1440p GTX980 have 61 fps, overclocked GTX980Ti have 90+ fps. For 100$ you get 384bit not 256bit memory, and 2GB more. GTX980 is barely stronger than R9-390X 8GB in some games are even same but Radeon is better long term solution. Special for two cards. You should use chance and to step-up on that GTX980Ti. That's successor of GTX780Ti, 980 is more optimized only to look stronger than GTX780Ti to give people some reason for upgrade. But GTX980Ti is real successor of GK110... Only NVIDIA didn't allow full chip. NVIDIA should install more video memory on GTX780Ti and GTX980. One with 3GB 384bit, other 4GB 256bit, both limited.

Well, thankfully EVGA is offering a free advanced RMA for you. just call them or email them to get your fixed FTW.

Hey guys, i've been following this thread for a while now. Reading it on and off, and getting scared in the process mind you! Since i own an SLI 980 FTW set-up. ( specs below )
My experience so far has been ok i guess, back when i build-in in the second card. I had a few blue-screen/restarts that would suddenly leave my second GPU undetected, but i figured this was a PCIE-slot seating issue since after reseating it was gone.
Ofcourse in the Witcher 3 back after the launch i had a few hickups, but 99% of the time it was stable and smooth. I tried overclocking the card, but the experiences were mediocre, i would be able to loop 3DMARK/Valley/Heaven for ages, but WoW/EU4 would give it a "solid color" freeze-up and reboot.
These days i keep the card "stock" as in default FTW speeds , and the only thing i changed is the fan profile. And i'm having -no- issues that are not related to the ****ty Nvidia drivers atm ( the whole chrome thing, dissapeared after the hotfix ).
But i'm still worried, i sometimes get a freeze in Battlefield 4 but only on Siege of Shanghai, that makes my whole computer inresponsive, and just shows that single frame. Forcing me to reboot.
But i never had the black screens people talk about, or the need to underclock. It's just solid 95% of the time.
TL;DR - My question is, should i start pushing for an RMA/Step-up/Replacement like SC, or does it sound like my FTW's are actually ok?
Sorry i don't want to rub it in or anything, but i'm suddenly really unhappy/insecure about this purchase.

If you feel that you may start having the issues that everyone else is having, just RMA your cards for the fixed ones, and then you won't have to worry.

Ok, i ran the Sky Diver test, without any adaptive V-Sync. No issues at all.
Graphics score 93758 and total 39505 respectively.
I guess this is a good sign? ( I hope.. )
@Stalin, there are fixed cards? I never knew! When did they enter circulation, mine are relatively new, bought medio May.

Yes, EVGA found and resolved the problem with the FTW, but you will have to send yours in to get the fixed ones. There is no "BIOS fix". Just call them and let them know you ran into a few issues with your cards, and they should offer you a free advanced RMA service so you get the fixed FTW's pretty fast. Think of it as "recall", but a gesture for the inconvenience of the FTW. If you bought yours in May, you probably still have the issues with them.

Allright thanks man, never knew. Just to be clear, did they change the production and would we be getting new cards that have the flaw fixed, or refurbished send-in 980's from possibly other people that have it "fixed" ?

@Gutterblade Loop the skydiver demo (default settings!), the error occurs randomly (for me). Sometimes it runs 1 hour, next time it crashes in the first or second run. I dont think that they could change the production and have "new" cards available in this short time, they would only fix the cards they have in stock or getting back from RMA.

You must decide crash in one test can't be unstable card, but because we know for problematic FTW series than reason is probably fault cards. All over net heavy overclocked cards pass Skydiver... But let's think better... RMA card for only one test if everything other work OK is stupid. But than card should pass other tests and games on at least 50-60MHz more overclocked. But than she need to work in any other situation perfectly, if driver is problem card will not crash only after full load, you will have problems in idle, during watching movies, you tube and other things... But if card stuck in some other situation same with crash on desktop with message driver stop responding, than no help for such card and gaming or benchmarking could be only more stressful for your nerves... Stop with testing as fault card. If she crash in 2-3 games, some benchmark tests she is not normal and constantly will make problems to you. But if she crash only and only in Skydiver every normal person will keep such card... When you try to OC card she will tell you everything, if she can't work on 50-60MHz overclocked over fabric OC she will make you problems. If she can't OC 10-20MHz nobody can say software or driver is problem because she crash. That's simply no one can't give you hardware exactly overclocked to the last MHz and to expect to stay stable next 3 years. No one is capable to understand hardware so good, special because drivers and applications are different to tune card on last stable clock... I have no crash with CPU on 4.5GHz 3 years because he pass very hard testing and long on 4.8GHz... but I can't sell him and give warranty few years on 4.8GHz or 4.7GHz... but 4.5-4.6 I can... Same is with graphic cards but manufacturers want to make more premium models even with limited number of good chips.

My card for example crashes in different games, i only use skydiver because it seems to reproduce the blackscreen error very good. I have owned highend nvidia cards from nearly each generation with beginning of the Geforce 2 Ti Series, but never had such strange issues, also not with massive overclocking under water, maybe i was only lucky the last 15 years.

I'm very curious to hear some news from you, hopefully you will receive your card soon. As a last resort i have the chance to take the step-up, but the 980TI is very expensive in Germany, 749€=830$. So i have to pay with shipment about 180€, this are 200$, i dont now, if its worth the money.

But what was actually found to be a problem? Is it a component that must be replaces? Is it some kind of firmware issue but needs special hardware to be applied and is not fixable with a simple BIOS update? Or is it something simple as thermal pad not touching what it should be touching, because this is fixable in minutes for some of us. Because if this is something that some of us can fix without spending all this money on shipments then why not just tell us. If it's bad components and there is nothing we can do about this. Except returning the cards to be fixed in the factory. Just say so.

I just got my new 980 FTW today from EVGA. It was shipped on 6/29/2015 at 9:59AM. I have the same results, black screen and buzzing sound on a number of games. I called Tech support and they claimed I have one of the fixed cards (they apparently started shipping on 29th). So, that means its something with my computer, I guess? Not exactly what to do at this point, except for step up. I guess if I pay the extra money and step up and I still have the same issue with the 980 TI I will definitely know I have some sort of issue...but I am not sure what as my PSU seems to be handling everything fine... EDIT: Also, I guess I have the same issue as others are reporting...signal loss...computer unresponsive until I hit the reboot button. Kinda hoped the fix would work, but its not working for me...

cnidarian I just got my new 980 FTW today from EVGA. It was shipped on 6/29/2015 at 9:59AM. I have the same results, black screen and buzzing sound on a number of games. Did you have a 980 FTW that you RMA'd previously with the same problem? The 29th also seems unlikely, since the post here about the issue wasn't even updated until the 1st of July. Seems unlikely that they would change these things before they even knew what the problem was.

I just got a call from Eddie at EVGA and he was extremely helpful, and got me all sorted out. It turns out that you were right, and I had sent my RMA in prior to the fix. Anyway...this is why I buy from EVGA. They are sending me a card that has the fix, so I am good!
