im tempted to pull my 670 ftw out of my girlfriends pc to see if the issue persists on her pc, but her power supply isnt big enough

You will be wasting time. The card will fail in any system. Everything you can think of others already tried.
And the problem with GTX980 FTW was already confirmed by EVGA anyway.

good to know, i was reading this entire thread, but fell asleep last night doing so lol.  hopefully by the time they have the new bios up, arkham knight will be fixed

Just so everyone is clear, It is NOT a driver issue. Many of you already know this. It's the GPU itself; Nvidia has nothing to do with this GPU crashing. There is already a fix being made from EVGA for this card, specifically.

No updates from Dave though. This is depressing. :(

Things like this does take time. What we do know is that they have found the source. Maybe they are trying to come up with solutions to solve the problem, rather than "compromising" the problem. My suggestion to you is just spend time with your lady until the matter at hand is fixed.

i received an update from support about the issue this morning, "Hello

EVGA is currently working on a bios update for this card. Please stay tuned to the forum post as there will be a update posted shortly. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this matter has caused. Please let us know if you have any other questions in order to support you further with your EVGA Product."

in good faith im sure they're busy testing it on the benches dave mentioned.  and i am aware this is not a driver issue, but the hotfix drivers did fix a lot of my other issues such as games hanging and not being able to tab out to end them.

It seems we're getting conflicting news from EVGA. thollis89 was told that a fix is being worked on. However I have an e-mail from EVGA saying "I do apologize for the inconvenience. This just came in today. There is an update available for the 980 FTW. To assist you, I would like to offer you a complimentary Advanced RMA." I have EVGA Advanced RMAing my cards one at a time, but if the update isn't finished why are they Advanced RMAing my cards....

Hello all,
Alright we do have a fix now.  Unfortunately this is not a BIOS fix.  We will need to RMA your card(s) to get this resolved.  Currently we have a limited number of tested cards, and getting more tested is our primary focus at the moment, and we will be assisting as fast as we can as the cards are passing testing.  Please contact customer service for support on this.
Again we sincerely apologize for the issue and the problems it has caused and we will get all of you up and running again as fast as possible.

Well, hopefully my 980 FTW that was just received for my step up to a 980ti can get the "fix" applied and become someones rma card
Now i must say that it is slightly disappointing that I shelled out $30 (EAR) to have my first 980 FTW advance rma'd to just find out 100 days later that it was pointless and you are giving all other owners advanced rma free of charge and they are actually getting a working as intended card.

If it is not a Bios issue, and not a driver issue, does this mean some bad components of the card got through QI? I ask this because obviously not all cards are affected only a small portion.

Oh well. I was starting to guess that this will not be fixable. I really don't think that it is a small portion that is effected. Because people having the same problem after multiple RMA's. What are the odds of that if it was a small portion?
imho, EVGA should make a recall, because retailers will keep selling bad product that will need to be RMA'd again if they don't.
Only when retailer RMA your card they will most likely give you another bad one from their stock. This doesn't look good. After the customer gets 2, 3 or 4 bad cards in a row you can be sure that his next purchase will not be from the same card maker.

Anyway, who is covering all the shipping costs?
As far as I know Advanced RMA program is only available for US.
The rest of the world have to pay for everything?

I just spoke with the customer service and RMA managers, and yes the Advanced RMA is for the US, however we will assist with shipping whenever possible for non US RMA's.

Does this mean only cards sold in the USA have a problem?

No, it just means you can only use "advanced RMA' if you are in the states. No Cross-ship available for those of us outside the US, that includes me who has a US address but it,s an APO address.

well thats a bummer, but glad theres a fix, resubmitting my rma request

*edit*  why not issue a recall for the ftw series affected by this problem? seems like an aweful lot of recalls. are you guys going to be providing cross ship or advanced rma for the people out of their periods to buy it? or complimentary even for dragging this on for five (for me) months?

Well let's apply a bit of logic shall we! if it was the voltage issue that everybody thought it was, then a altered bios would fix that and any other programmable matters, as it is not a driver issue! well as far as you are concerned, we can rule that out.

AS it is not a universal problem, requiring a product recall, we can assume there may have been a batch of some components were not on spec and got out into the wild.

So, I am curious.  I sent my 980FTW back for RMA last week and they are now sending me a new one (and it was shipped two days ago).  Is this part of a batch that has that fix?  Or am likely to have another issue?

Also, according to my website I can do an Advanced RMA on the new 980FTW they are sending, but it will cost me extra money to sign up for that.

I haven't received any email updates regarding my 980 FTW that's currently defective and not functioning properly. Specifically, none offering an Advanced RMA. Is this something I should expect in the next few days?

I'm also hesitant to go this route, only because I've been in the step-up queue for the 980ti for several weeks now; if I forgo the step-up program, and instead choose the RMA my product (for a second time), there's a chance it may still be an issue, and I will be outside of the step-up window for replacement.

Like you I've been in the Step Up program for several weeks as well.  I guess you have to ask yourself how much faith you actually still have in the FTW series.  Do you think this fix is actually going to be a permanent one or are you going to have that nagging worry that your troubles are not going to be over?  I've traditionally had very good results with EVGA that has kept me coming back to the brand for the 4th or 5th time now.  But I get the feeling that the 980 FTW series is just kinda one of those "cursed" products and I am not sure I am willing to stake my gaming time for the next few years on a product that started out so poorly.

Morning all, I will try to cover some of the big questions here, yes the other centers (Germany etc) know about this so that should not be a problem.
For anyone needing an RMA, please contact customer service as in most locations we are able to assist with shipping, but because this is not a general we cover shipping for EVERYTHING (mobo, mouse, PSU, USB device, etc.....) and just for this specific issue if you check on the website ti will still list only the more general warranty info.
We will not be sending out 980FTW's that do NOT have the fix.
As for the stepup, the 980TI is clearly a better performing card.  If you are alright with the cost for the stepup, personally I would stay with the stepup.

Not necessarily. Increasing voltage also does many things to a card, especially on air. for one, it heats the capacitors, that's just for starters. There are other pieces that overheat when you just "slide the voltage up". Which is why, I'm sure, it took the techs quite a bit of time to make some "customizations" to the FTW to make it more stable. A little quick fix to the BIOS would not fix this issue.

I think their way of doing a "recall" is giving everyone a courtesy Advanced RMA for the inconvenience.

Please by all mean contact Customer Service at support@evga.com and/or 888-881-3842, we are trying to help out everyone with this issue.

Hello all,
Alright we do have a fix now.

If it is not a Bios issue, and not a driver issue, does this mean some bad components of the card got through QI? I ask this because obviously not all cards are affected only a small portion.

Problem is probably to high clock and only some of cards could work overclocked on FTW speed.
If EVGA explain BIOS is not problem and people resolve with downclocking than reason is obvious fabric overlocking.
They tried maybe to fix some cards with BIOS, but if chips are wea... its very hard someone to find solution for that. Higher voltage can't help always.
Maybe if owners inject more voltage as 1.300V with water cooling and only on fabric speed, but that's not 100% long term solution for gaming.
First on high voltage is not possible to work on Air in normal temp range.

Vlada you nailed it. It's what I have also been saying all along, probably too high clock speeds.

Still waiting for my step-up. Almost four weeks now that I've been in queue, and since April that I've bought the card. Thankfully they've acknowledged the issue and are working on a solution; however, I've had a $600 paperweight for months now.

I would have happily settled for a non-FTW card, even a reference model with nothing fancy; the only option I was given was step-up and pay $100 more or be left with said $600 paperweight.

When did they acknowledge the problems with the FTWs and what is the issue?

Thanks

Just wait to see what the other owners report back on these rebuilt cards and then make your decision.

EVGATech_DaveB...As for the stepup, the 980TI is clearly a better performing card.  If you are alright with the cost for the stepup, personally I would stay with the stepup.

This is what I am sticking with.

just curious, my rma already shipped or is atleast in the shipping phase, but it has the same 2986 model number as my broken one? are they going to have the same model numbers on both the fixed and broken ones?
