Evga has officially said that it will support 4 way SLI. Its not "internet chatter".

Halo_003

Just comparing this score to my score of my Stock Quad SLI score.
(no physx)

Mine: 23342                 30102
GPU: 26432                    32241
         71                          98
         83                          89

CPU:17280                    25106
         2413                     3525
         22.36                    31.99

So my STOCK scores are not that far off his LN2 scores?  am I missing something?  The 480's are not that much better then the 295's?

He is running the cards with a very mild OC Nate. His core speed is 770\mem 1020\shader 1540.

A single GTX 480 is on par with a single GTX 295. Quad SLI scaling is what makes two GTX 480's stomp on x2 GTX 295s.

I vote you buy a pair of 5970's. Far cheaper than a Quad\Tri GTX 480 setup. I also dont think Nvidia will be able to get the heat down enough to come out with a dual GPU card for quite awhile.

im wondering if nvidia is going to come with another high end gpu that doesn't need water cooling...

i still have to wait for the dual gpus to hit...grrrrr! might have to ditch this board for a 7 laner.

I am not looking at the 480's in terms of GPU's, but in terms of a videocard as a whole.  When it boils down to it, it is a single graphics card, vs another.  If they want to pack 2 gpu's in 1 card thats up to nvidia.  It is 1 card occupying 1 pci-e slot, and thats how I will look at it.  My 2 cards, vs his 2 cards.

I know there is more to it, but people hyped the crap out of those cards so I am going to be a skeptic still.  I am not in any rush to sell my 295's as of yet- but that wild 3d stuff I saw definatly has my attention.

1x480 = 1x295 look about right.  Too close to call right now.    I'm sure Nvidia is comparing the 480 to a 295 co-op when it shows it beating the 295 by a little bit.  If that's all correct, there's no reason to ditch the 295's just yet.  Wait for dual pcb version.....

I took my 980X out of the motherboard and noticed a small little scratch on the surface.  Like a pick mark.  It goes into the metal because I can see the copper color underneath.  The water block also as it??  Maybe some debris got in between?  I don't know.  Doesn't effect performance, but I'd rather fix it...at least the water block as I don't want to void the CPU warranty.

How and what do I use to lap my copper HK 3.0 water block?

I think that "scratch" is debris  and/or too hot, had it happen on my 920 when the pump went out.
Didn't seem to cause any damage.
Sandpaper and a flat surface.

He doesnt want to void his warranty.

Im not sure what to think if it. Definately not due to temps if it looks like a scatch. But I am really curious to see what kind of temps you are getting on water with 1.6v\4.69ghz

Quad SLI link.

I think for now I'll hold onto my 295.... Maybe see if I can pick up a 5870/5970 sometime over the summer if the price is driven down. I dunno, I agree with you guys. The 480 does look a little weak esp for LN2.. And that SLI pic I posted was on air, not LN2 IIRC.

Although... I still want a 285 Classified. Could try for some WRs with that.

you can do it with your 295's...just need some real 3d glasses. not going to look as great as what you saw....and no where near as fast either ...lol. i did it with my 295's.

vs the manufactures tri sli link....

now if it's quad...it needs to be quad as of right now. not 1 or 2 or 3 months from now.
dont remember anyone saying they found a quad sli bridge in their boxes either...

but we shall see... sure hope it's quad...

I would be terrified lapping a 1K$ cpu.  But to lap your HK block (or anything else)  start at 100 grit.  Get more sandpaper for the rougher grits because you go through that stuff more to sand off more mass & copper sticks in everything.

(80 or 60)

And can't you go to 4000 grit to make it extra shiny?

DO NOT lap the HK 3.0. People have dont this and it has only lowered performance of the block. The block is bowed and this is part of the design.

I did

400
800
1500

Mostly just used the 400 grit to get all the copper exposed and it completely flat. My temps dropped 2c-4c. The difference between the cores stayed the same though.

I checked my 920, and it has it too, but not as bad.  You can see the last pic of the HK 3.0 with the "blemish" that is causing the problem.  Can I just locally sand out that spot on the HK without lapping the whole thing, Rudster?  Click to enlarge, then click again to enlarge further.

I wouldnt bother trying to fix anything. Its not hurting your performance from your setup, so I wouldnt want to touch anything and risk making things worse\voiding your warranty.

John, under your art eraser insulation (assuming that's what it is), did you put any kind of tape anywhere? I am going to start prepping a board for DICE today, and am not sure if i should put tape down, specifically around the socket. Look at this guy's 5th and 6th pictures to see what i mean: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=201916. But then it seems Buckeye at 411 and XS doesn't use tape: http://www.411overkill.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=5552.

Your opinion on the matter?

Rabid, I probably have about a dozen dice runs under my belt now and here is what I do for insulation with absolutely no problems yet.

1. I painted the back side of my motherboard with liquid electrical tape in about a 6" square directly under where the cpu sits.

2. I put art eraser down all around the socket area out to the nb/pwms

3. I cut out a a folded in half piece of paper towel with a square hole in the center for the cpu then place that on top of the art eraser.

4. I cut a similar piece of 3/4" thick neoprene that sits on top of the paper towel.

5. I put a 1/4" sheet of neoprene between the back of the motherboard and the aluminum plate my 6/32" threaded rod goes in.

6.  I put my neoprene tube insulation on the pot, and wrap it up with paper towels.

This technique has worked fine for me with no problems at all yet.

So no tape? Also, would art eraser be fine for the back of the board? That is what i had planned, along with a piece of neoprene after the eraser and before the backplate.
