Hey. This is my first post on here. I do not know if this has already been covered 100%, but if you download the PDF for the manual of the GTX 480, it says under the features section that it does support 4-way SLI!! This is just if people don't know 100% already

Yeah 4 of these cards in one system will be hot. I assume they will need to be hydro versions or water cooled by their own means.

Ya for sure. They bad boys pump out a lot of heat. Well, heat and power I guess. The power requirements for these will be an eVGA 1200w alone, just for the cards.

I don't think a 1200waat PSU will cut it... maybe a 1500Watt. Also the Hydro versions show 50c temps. I assume those temps are idle and not under load. of course they list the disclaimer of ( results may very depending on the configuration of your system)

Well, I don't think something like a Coolmax 1200W PSU can power much at all. NVIDIA says the GTX 480 uses 250W max... it is unlikely one will see such power consumption but lets use this number. So going by NVIDIA, four GTX 480s can use 1000W at max load, but then again video cards aren't completely utilized in SLI. But whatever. Add a highly overclocked CPU and you'd be looking at over 1300W max load, that is going by the official numbers. Then calculate drives, fans, etc. Oh wait, we passed 1200W already. In reality, 1200W might be cutting it a bit close with such a system. You don't want to put too much stress on a power supply. Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W, anyone?

When I said 1200w PSU before, I was referring to powering just the graphics cards, and having a separate one for the rest of the system. Sorry if I caused any confusion. But ya, either way they take up a lot of power.

He did say 1200 watts alone for four GPU's, which is correct provided that they are all used @ 100%. Much of today's applications will not require that kind of computing power. Folding anyone? :)

My thought is any board that supports 4-way SLI officially. I was leaning towards the eVGA one. I don't know of too many that officially support it with dual NF200 chips.

Based on the reviews the 480 is more like 300-310W not 250W. The evga 1200W PSU shouldn't have a problem doing just the 4x480's +OC as long as the 1500W peak is for a 120v line and not a 240v line. 4x480's + SR-2 MB = 2 evga 1200W PSU's.

Water cooling would certainly be a must. Even NVidia says that for a 2 card SLI configuration, there should be at least 1 slots worth of space between the cards for airflow. Having 4 cards all back to back would almost certainly fry a couple of them.

Well I think 1 triple 120mm fan rad would work fine for 2 GTX 480's, maybe even 1 dual 120 fan rad would work, that's all I use on my GTX 295. The problem is going to be after the 2nd gpu. You would have to run the loop out from that card and cool the water before going into the next 2 gpu's.
