I don't think anyone has yet confirmed that this mobo will have 40 pci-e lanes or still 32 like all their other x79 offerings.

Very nice board compared to anything I've ever seen related to EVGA motherboards. Now that has all the swag and style for the win! :)

I want the prosessor thats best for gaming between 3820 and 3930K. Want to overclock it, but not an extreme oc.
I read several times that many think 3970X Extreme  is not worth the price difference regarding gaming????

One of the reasons I am intrested in the Dark is that it seems I can run my 2 680 classy's in x16 + x16 and my OCZ Revodrive 3 x2 in a pcie 4.
And have room for a third GPU in x8? If I am not badly mistaken?

The Dark is suppose to have 40 lanes of PCIE.

If you can wait I'd go with the Ivy bride-E processor Core i7-4930K

IF you really can wait I would wait for Haswell E processors.

I'm one of the lucky ones who's X79 mother board works fully to spec. I'm not sure if its because I'm on the SLI version. I know the other guys on here that have the classified and FTW have all the same problems.

Once in a while I'll notice the USB 3 hub will be off. Happens every great once in a while.

I'm not doing any more project until Haswell-E processors are out.

Wait? I needed my gaming rig up and running yesterday( my mb is caputt)
Well the 4930K look seems not coming before September 2013 and Haswell E I se speculation on eta is from Q3 2013 too Q4 2014.
It could be a  very long to wait when now just using a simple laptop and cant play games.

If I going to wait to September this year I need a nice 1366 MB in the meantime, I search here in Norway it seems impossible to find one.

I Found a new EVGA X58 Classified 4-Way SLI, but the price is 864 US dollars  http://www.eliteshop.no/datautstyr/hovedkort/intel-socket/evga-x58-classified-4-way-sli-socket-1366-xl-atx-ddr3-2xgblan-2-3-and-4-way-sli-7xpci-ex-2-0-x16.html

The arrival of the "Dark" is hopefully closer than September.
I check around on Monday for a x58 MB with nice pcie layout(since we dont know when dark is ariving) when the stores open, but if I cant find such MB I could be forced to go with something else than Evga uppgrade from my x58.

Now that's what I call for the win! Has it stands now all the other EVGA Motherboard's look aged compared to the likes of Asus, MSI and Gigabyte. I'm glad EVGA finally got their creative side flowing. Now their motherboards look has sexy has their top end video cards.

He should just move onto another motherboard like Asus, MSI or Gigabyte. I've not had a single issue with my MSI MB ever since the very first boot. It all has to do with R&D and engineering prior to release. Why fuss on the forums when there's so many options. Sure I've tried EVGA X58 and the EVGA FTW X79 and didn't like them so I moved on to other hardware. I still love EVGA video cards no doubt. But for motherboards I will keep clear of anything EVGA releases for awhile.

Haswell E won't be if it does come out for the consumer line (not Xeon) will end up being Late 2014, so I wouldn't even worry about it this year.  Not only that socket 2011 is dead end anyways with Haswell E chips on a new socket.

I'm saying, If someone is considering building a new rig right now I would wait for Either Ivy-E which is speculated to launch around September this year and or Wait even longer for Haswell-E which is being speculated to be released around end of 2014.

I couldn't agree with you more.  If I didn't have a couple X79 builds right now and was looking to upgrade from X58 (keeping the same enthusiast platform type) there is no way I would purchase and X79 board, new or not.  Wait until September or so, pick up a board designed for Ivy-E specifically and a new Ivy-E chip.  With all the little hiccups and problems with X79, why not get the latest and greatest with FULL certification for PCIE-3.0 etc.    Purchasing an X79 Dark in say June/July juist doesn't make sense to me when Ivy-E is launching this Fall.

The fact that this STILL has gone unanswered scares me.  Anyone?  Single fact is that many people were/are running X79 for the extra lanes.  Taking them away is counter intuitive and counterproductive.

The main reason I would get a Dark is because, at least they are going to help with something that would cost less than a whole new MB and be better than the FTW.(Providing it comes out and works as advertised) ALL along I planned to buy the Ivybridge-E when it came out. Since that CPU will have be PCIe 3.0 cert. on the chip like the Xeon chips shouldn't that work peachy with with the Dark? Plus is Intel going to have a new chipset out for the Ivybridge E? I have seen the roadmap and I thought the latest chipset coming out was going to be the NEXT Intel Cpu...

I know people here know a LOT more than I ever will and I learn tons here, so I will be corrected if I misread... My goal for the summer is a 100% working computer, I hope I am not asking a lot...

Sometime in June .... could be in two weeks or six weeks. Or in July.
Never mind, I just hope it beats the new Xbox to launch. Otherwise I'll have a real dilemma ... ;-)

If it's anything like GPU's, you have to step up to the next 'series', ie: X58 -> Z77, Z77 -> X79.. can't step up to a different model in same series. At least that is my best guess... although unsure what EVGA will put in place for this particular board considering the issues on this thread.

Re:EVGA X79 Dark 2013/05/14 07:25:18 (permalink)
While this does not specifically address what they will be doing with the x79 dark, this is EVGA's usual step-up rules for motherboards:

"Motherboards
  • EVGA motherboard products are limited to pre-approved models and same socket-type only.
  • Products known to have limited availability will not be made available to the Step-Up program. (Limited availability determined by EVGA.)
  • Customers who received their EVGA motherboard as part of a complete computer system are not eligible - except for those listed on our approved system vendor list.
Motherboard Examples:
  • P55 SLI (Socket 1156) → X58 SLI (Socket 1366): NO (Different CPU Socket)
  • P55 SLI (Socket 1156) → P55 FTW (Socket 1156): YES (Same CPU Socket)"
Based on this, I would assume that you would have to have purchased some flavor of socket 2011 board to qualify for a step-up.

I notice Jacob mention about gpu can run at x16 - x16 -x8

My question is then:
When I have 2 x Evga GTX680 Classiefied and one pcie ssd OCZ Revodrive 3 x2 can I then get a third GPU and manage to have a config like this:
2 x classified in x16
Third GPU in x8
OCZ  revodrive in pcie x4 slot(quess/hope is what the little pcie slot is ?)

I looked into many MB, and that I bought the ocz revodrive seems more and more not to be an smart move, if one wants 3 gpu or more.

If I remember right everything gets stuck at x8 except for one of the card if you are running all 4 pcie slots as you only have 40 pcie lanes. I'm sure Jacob will confirm this or correct it.

Yup that's right, but from what I understood, he is running the Revo in a x4 slot...but the outcome will be the same.  X79 boards from EVGA for some silly reason only have 32 lanes instead of 40.    8+8+8= 24.  Revo in a x 4 = total of 28 lanes.  Only 4 are left over so it won't help him any.  Now, if he had a FULL 40 lanes, he could run 16x8x8x4x.
If he didn't use the Revo, he could run 16x8x8x on an EVGA board OR 16x16x8 on any other X79 board.

Jacob confirmed that EVGA boards have 32 lanes by stating that if you run 4 graphics cards, they will all run at 8x since 8x4 = 32
