Anyone else not able to view year 12 points? On 3/1/19 it was there but had negative points, but since then it has been gone. Points still showing up fine on EOC folding site.

Re: EVGA Folding @ Home Year 12 2019/03/04 22:39:50 (permalink)
Thanks to EVGA for continuing the wonderful promotion.  I am a little late to the party here but will give my input anyway.  I have a computer at home in Iowa that I fold on and now built one where I stay in Missouri during the winter months.  The Iowa computer only has GTX 970's x 2.   The MO rig has a RTX 2080.  I don't leave either computer running or actively folding depending on where I am staying.  Right now I am in MO and the points threshold is not going to be a problem with the 2080.  I am pretty sure the IA computer will not be able make the threshold unless I never use it for gaming or god forbid having to shut down for an issue.  I fold for the cause all I am able, but folding for the team and EVGA bucks is just an incentive.  I fear an unattainable threshold for the people using older gen cards will cause them to stop.  Especially if they won't make the threshold unless they choose folding over gaming, etc.  Even with the 2080 and a 9900k running full bore all the time I think my best is around 1.5 million ppd.  If I gamed alot I don't think I would make the threshold.  I will continue to fold as I always have and see how it shakes out.  I have to say it will be a little discouraging for the team if we loose too many folders, and for myself if I am not able to make the threshold without a dedicated folding rig.

I started Folding as an incentive to get my next graphics card, especially through EVGA and this promotion. I have a 980 Ti with a 6700K and I've been eager to upgrade, figuring folding for a year or so would give me a nice discount on whatever it is I buy next. However with these ramped up point goals that is no longer feasible because I've only made 12M max in a month. I keep my computer folding roughly 95% of the time because I'm in school and am busy. This massive increase just feels like its only incentivizing those who already have the most current powerful hardware (2016 isn't even that old).

I suppose it begs the question who the target audience is for this promotion. I really do appreciate the incentive, but it's not worth tiring out my equipment quicker if the goal post is going to move significantly farther away. I can't afford to go balls to the wall with my rig all the time.

It might be beneficial to put a small note on the year 11 page to note year 12 targets. Many "bucks folders" might stop near the year 11 targets not knowing the new goalposts. Could cause some confusion and bad feelings.

It will probably take us a little longer than usual, to be honest. The programmer who created the page is no longer with us, so we have a little catching up to do on that.  As you all know by now, we were spending a lot of time putting together the Associates Program, which ate up a lot of programming time, and we're still not done with it yet.

I appreciate if you can bear with us for a bit longer on updating the Promo page.

New site is up, at least on my browser.
Looks good.

Well, 3 1080ti and 1 2080ti made the 21 million mark within 7 days.

Re: EVGA Folding @ Home Year 12 2019/03/07 18:33:26 (permalink)
I guess I'm a little late to the party on the commenting period and I didn't know the finish line has been pushed further away until after reviewing this thread.

I am a gamer. I love EVGA cards. I am a "bucks folder". I don't need anyone's judgement.

My 2 cents...

I gotta say I love that EVGA has implemented an incentive for folding. I would have never started folding if they didn't! The bucks made me investigate what folding even was and justified spending money on equipment and electricity to do some folding. It's cool that it's for a good cause but that's not what drew me to folding and it's not what kept me folding.

I think the 7 and 21 million targets are too high. I thought it was still 2 and 4 but I've already started for the month so I'll try for 7 then retire.

2 and 4 were easier to hit. I've also got a 1080Ti folding though... 7 and 21 are an unnecessary burden on the casual folder and will I think you'll have some folks that quit and won't come back even if changes are made down the road.

I'm a gamer that folds. I'm not trying to win any trophies. The EVGA bucks were just about a wash with electricity costs where I am. The bucks can only be spent at EVGA, and EVGA sets their own prices for their store. They're making better margins selling directly than through a vendor. Depending on demand, they sometimes inflate price or run a sale. They have control over these prices and the bucks used in house promote spending on EVGA products vs competitors.

Why the change in the points?
  • Because the program is too expensive? I can totally understand that but people are using the bucks at your store. EVGA gets the sale of an EVGA products and with greater margins than through a vendor.
  • Because the targets are too easy? For whom...? You have people on this forum with 5 year old tech and you've got very active users with 4+ state of the art cards mining 24/7. Too easy is a relative concept. It depends on your audience. All people folding are donating their time, power, and equipment for charity.
  • Because you are trying to accomplish more work units in order to have a higher folding @ home ranking? I could argue that you're driving away a lot of casual folders including myself. Who knows if this will lead to a higher rank. Those who are alienated or can't make any bucks with their equipment might resolve that it's not worth the effort anymore.
Any folding > 0 folding when people quit because it's too expensive.

The great part about EVGA is it's community. It's very active and has a lot of great people that are very intelligent.
EVGA is generous with giveaways and promotions like this that incentivize philanthropy. I am very appreciative of EVGA for providing these benefits. They totally rock.

However,
I believe this change is too drastic and unattainable for the average gamer. It used to be mutually beneficial but now is turning into a high score contest where only a select few that have dedicated a lot of time, money, and effort will receive in return at most $10 in a promotional credit that can only be used in EVGA's store. This change will no doubt exclude some folders from achieving the incentive they were working towards to offset cost. It will also alienate others. Some diehard folders will continue to fold... They'll tell you too because they're very active on this forum. That is very generous of them to donate their time and money to a good cause like folding.

I think a lot of "bucks folders" will realize it's too expensive though and quit after they realize they aren't getting bucks in March. That's a shame because this program encourages brand loyalty, charity and an engaged community.

Thanks for listening to my voice

ksuaviator, Remember this from the First Post;

One other important measure to note for Year 12 is that the point totals are not set in stone.  This time, we're going to monitor the point totals to see how easy/hard it is to achieve these point totals for the community, and adjust if necessary.

I'm at 3.3m+ for the year 12 :)

I also think that 7m and 21m is too much. At least for me in a typical month 7m won't be possible, not to mention more.  Maybe there should be some more steps like 5, 15, 30, ... or something. I know that graphics cards are now more powerful but on the other hand also good cards cost much more than previous generations.

I've been folding since 2004 when I started over on PCper's folding frogs team (the_nforcer2006) when I was just 16, taking a break here and there due to heat or just the noise level of my PC. Never was a 24x7 folder, folding only during school, homework and sleep times.  Originally started folding due to losing both of my grandparents to it, may they rest easy. I ended up getting out of the folding scene for a while then started up again when I saw EVGA offered some kickback on folding progress. Thought hey cool. I can apply this toward a new card, I struggled to meet quotas on my 780 at the time. Saved up enough to get great discount on a 980TI and now a 1080TI.

For me, will I still fold? Most likely I will. Sticking to my work and sleep schedule of folding. I tend to only fold for 2 weeks out of a month 16ish hrs a day on a 1080TI. Usually decreasing production during summer due to heat. A warm bedroom that doesn't exactly get a good amount of AC makes for some rough sleep times. Seeing the point increase to 7mil and 21 mil was a shock to see for sure. Ill see what I can get during my two weeks I do fold, but if I don't hit any point levels, that's fine with me. I did fold enough for the 4mil point break most often of times. But some months I did push toward 6.3 / 6.9 mil this past year.

I didn't start this originally to get kickback on bucks, if I got it, i got it, but if I didn't. That's okay too. Knowing that I am helping with research that I have lost so many loved ones with is fine with me.

Fold on everyone and thank you for this great community!

Re: EVGA Folding @ Home Year 12 2019/03/08 10:25:18 (permalink)
Has anyone looked at this from EVGA's side?  Probably not, SO, lets just say that for Year 11, 500 people hit the mark and got 10 bucks every month for the 12 months last year.  Thats 120 bucks x 500 people = 60,000.00 dollars in revenue they gave away.  But what if 2000 people hit that mark of 10 bucks a month for 12 months?  That means they would have given away 240,000.00 dollars in revenue, and lets just say, those same 2000 people have been hitting it for all 11 years?  Well, then EVGA has given away over 2.6 billion dollars in revenue that they could have made by just selling their products and not giving back.  Yes I know that it could have been less, it could be more, only EVGA really knows those numbers.  Yes I also know, that some people would probably go buy product from some where else other than EVGA.  That's your freedom to do so.  The fact that EVGA is willing to do anything is AMAZING, lets not forget EVGA is NOT required to do anything.
With the old tiers I could hit those two tiers within the first day, but now since I don't have all the rigs that I had.  It's going to take 10-15 days, maybe longer depending on what work units I get, and if I don't hit the marks, I don't.   I just want to find a cure!!  Or at least a better treatment, that is less harmful to the body as radiation.  My Uncle had to stop radiation last November because it burn a hole in his colon.  Chemo wasn't having any effect, so he is now living his life to the fullest he can for what ever time is left.  And my friends' mom, Mary, her Alzheimer's progression has been slowed by the drugs that have come out lately.  I think one of them was developed from the findings of Folding at home. But she's not cured, it's only slowing down the memory loss.
So in my opinion, stop caring so much about how you may not getting your 10 EVAG bucks.  And care a little more about the peoples lives that could be affected by a better treatment or a cure!   If you need the 10 bucks that much, then don't go to Starbucks a few times a month, take your lunch to work a few times a month.  There are PLENTY of ways to save up 10 bucks a month.

Oh and also, for those that still don't get it.......   "THESE NUMBERS AREN'T SET IN STONE!"    EVGA said the will adjust the numbers up OR down as needed.

Legit upgraded for 2 reasons, to game on a monitor that I bought too soon, and to try to make these goals...
Also, RTX looks fantastic on a 4k

Asus PG27AQ > Cooler Master HAF XB EVO > ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 > Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.3GHz > CORSAIR Hydro Series H90 > G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB @2400MHz >EVGA RTX 2080 > EVGA SuperNova 1000G3 Power Supply

Re: EVGA Folding @ Home Year 12 2019/03/08 13:18:16 (permalink)
Although I supported Folding and its cause let alone EVGA's incentive with the EVGA Bucks, I still think this new tiers are far too high, atleast for me.

I Dont have a dedicated folding machine, so in my case my folding stops when im using the PC and it continues when I go to sleep and work.

I am running a 1080Ti (single)...
to give you in numbers, say the PC runs the fold, it will use about +/- 250W from the wall.

to me that would translate to:
Power consumption per day 6.00 kWh
Consumption costs per day € 1.32

running 24hrs none stop, whats the current avg PPD of 1080ti? say nearly 1mil? to reach the tier 2 goal of 21mil this would have to run 21 days none stop (remember? this is not a dedicated folding pc).

so just to reach the 21mil mark it will cost me roughly €30 in electricity bill and gain 10 EVGA bucks back (€10 for EU) so total bill would be €20 if we deduct the evga bucks.

although I can tell you, that I am not complaining about the extra bill I have to pay, cuz i truly dont mind that extra €20 p/m but for me it would mean having to fold 24/7 for an entire month as I do stop folding in between to make use of my PC on an acceptable performance.

at the same time I do see why EVGA would increase the numbers this far, this is pretty much to keep users from folding more and longer, which would benefit the cause alot more instead of users stopping after 4mil mark (which i do sometimes as well).

but I wonder howmany users would stop folding because of this, as its not worth doing it anymore, I really doubt theres more users here that folds for the cause against users who are in it for the evga bucks :) as I am someone who actually put 2 together and decided on both.

with those numbers though most likely I would stop folding pretty much as I dont see the incentive that great anymore, might aswell fold curecoin ><

I’m coming up on my 10th year folding for EVGA, I want to say thank you for your support in folding. I got into it because my grandmother had (unfortunately had) Alzheimer’s. This was the only way I knew I could help. At first before kids I sunk thousands and thousands into folding. Back when getting a million a year was huge.
10 years later with kids and other responsibilities I can afford the new technology. I guess it’s cool I made it 10 years, this is a great team....find a cure!!!

Folding whatever I can :o)

Brilliant move from EVGA these new limits. Lose half the money folders and still get same amount of fold done way less bucks

Edit: https://eu.evga.com/folding/MyFolding.asp still shows Year 11 page
