Can't compete with used Intel server parts. Build a rig for what the new CPUs cost. And they crunch just as well.

Nice addition yatz. I picked up a 2x E5-2670 setup from Natex when they had the deal. Very happy with it.

Pretty much ANY recent-generation discrete GPU has FP64 capability - BUT: On consumer cards, the top FP64 performance was team Red - the Tahiti based cards like the 7950/7970 and R9 280/280x - and to a lesser degree the Hawaii cards like the R9 290/290x/390/390x. This also applies to the 7990 (dual Tahiti IIRC) and R9 295x (dual Hawaii IIRC). They have better FP64 performance than any of the Titan line as I recall (definitely higher than the Maxwell or Pascal Titan line members, not 100% sure on the Kepler-based Titan). Current Pascal cards seem to have comparable FP64 performance to current RX cards - but I don't remember any of them achieving even HALF the performance on FP64 of the Tahiti (even the 1080ti or Vega). For higher FP64 performance, you have to go to some of the Quadro or specific members of the Firepro EXPEN$IVE workstation lines (but NOT the WX series as those used the same GPUs as consumer cards).
Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding. I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

The Titan 6gb and Titan Black are DP beasts They can do 10 Milkyway tasks at a time. My R9-280x not so much, maybe 2 or 3, about the same as my Gtx 980Ti The 280x is better than the GTX970 and close to the 980Ti not as good as the 1080Ti Maybe because of the raw performance and power/speed of the newest Nvidia cards. Either way not going to spend a bunch of $$ for just a couple projects we hardly ever run. If one falls in my lap, I'll use it..... Lets keep TX and LA in our thought and prayers.

Turns out I was wrong about the Kepler-based Titans - they have anywhere from 1.3 to 1.7 the FP64 performance of the R9 280x on FP64 - but I did say I was "not 100% sure on the Kepler-based Titans". R9 280x (and the 7970, same GPU after all) are capable of a bit over 1000 FP64 Mflops, the Kepler-based Titans range from 1300 to a bit over 1700. The Titan Z was a dual-core monster, at 3400 - but it's more fair to compare it to the ballpark 2000 of the 7990 which was also a dual-core monster. So yeah, they're monsters - but I'm not sure if they were counted as "consumer" cards at the time. The 1080ti and Pascal Titans are under 400 MFlops, the 980ti and Maxwell Titan are under 200 - those are all beat NARROWLY by the RX 480/580 at a little OVER 400 MFlops as I recall.... Those numbers are out of the OFFICAL specs for AMD and NVidia, but are pretty closely confirmed in the table at http://www.geeks3d.com/20140305/amd-radeon-and-nvidia-geforce-fp32-fp64-gflops-table-computing/ Note that a LOT of workstation class cards exceed 2000 GP64 MFlops - they're just EXPEN$IVE even now if you can find them used....

I suppose too that with the tasks we do that can use DP, can be done as fast with cards without DP Just the GPU speed and new tech. PG Genfer 20 and 21 can use DP. When I got my R9-280x they blew my 660Ti and GTX970away. But my GTX980Ti with out very good DP is faster than my 280, to the point I stopped using them. In fact I sold off my 280x and all my 970s a month or two ago when those cards were in demand.

If you want toasty warm for the winter, try having a folding farm well in excess of 10,000,000 PPD capability. GTX 1070/1080/1080ti are efficient folders, but 23 of them (and more on the way) do add up to a bit of heat.... 9-) (that's not counting my Moo/Dnet farm, or the scrypt ASIC farm that has been paying my bills the last few months).

Honestly since the bigadv debacle and all the other screwing of the donators, I do not care much about folding anymore. They did it to me several times, they do not want you to build dedicated folding systems. They want you spare cycles. So they say. All that folding lets students write papers. Not much more. They could not give a rats butt about the donors and how much money you spend. BOINC WCG has really saved lives, and has produced real cures. As far as heat for the Winter. I have well over 375 cores/threads and 9 GPus 980ti or better. It can go below zero before I have to run the boiler for heat, if everything is up and running.

Yeah, looks like they cover all the details quite well. WCG is very easy to get setup and crunching. Just remember to join the team while/after you create your account. Best to use the same name for every project you join. WCG has several different sub-projects to choose from.

What is a good knife, good question. I have carried a pocket knife since I was a cub-scout, back then I wore it clipped my belt in school! Many things to consider choosing a knife. What will it be used for, under what conditions. I like a carbon blade, they hold their edge very well and I can hone it to shaving sharp. Have to keep it clean and oiled or it will rust. Stainless steel will resist rusting, harder to sharpen, but holds an edge very well. There are many different steels to choose from. D2, high carbon, Damascus, CV, aus8 and several Chinese blends. I good knife with have good fit and finish. The back of the blade when open will seamless with the knifes backspring. Blade centered when closed to avoid the blade being scraped up. The back spring should make the knife snap when opining and closing. (walk and talk). The knifes scales should look good and even with all the edges it is near. Some exceptions, stilettos the scales are bigger than the bolsters. Like anything else, you want a company that honors their warranty. Kershaw makes decent lower cost knives in the 20-50$ range. I carry an Al-Mar Eagle Talon most of the time. Sometimes my Case stag trapperlock, Kershaw Damascus Leek Al Mar is AUS8 steel and weighs only 2oz and fit and finish if as good as I ever seen. Made in Japan (good thing) http://www.ebay.com/itm/A...543:g:QcsAAOSw03lY7Owt

Hey Cool, If you want to dip your toes in, the latest Boinc software should be down loaded from here. Not the VB one offered, the other. If you want to utilize VB later, best to download the latest version direct from Oracle. The newest Boinc Manager from Berkeley is the best. The WCG version is not updated as often.

All the above, and they inform you when they will be down with maintenance or are having a server error even a bad set of projects if there are any. Announcements when they have produced a paper on findings if there are any..... and no snotty forum mods that I have seen placing blame on the end user.....and the best part, there is sososososo much to choose from project wise.

Not that I know of.. Many of us here want no part of any crypto coin. We try not to speak of any *coin team here. Why would we? The EVGA BOINC crunching team pretty much started by people who were tired of Pande group and the way they treated donors. It is a place to crunch with no expectations on anyone, crunch what and when you want. Tired of chasing points, dealing with the folding forum and all the stuff that goes with it. Some of us enjoy challenges and the sprints, which in a way it is chasing points, but you don't have to do it. We are happy coming in 5th place, or in 6th place.

Spot on Bill SPOT on!!! I could have not worded it better. I began folding 10yrs ago as of this month actually. Stanford has not changed their habits at all, same BS with their forums and placing the blame on the end users. WU server failures and all that other garbage that goes with it. I will most likely not be back to Folding, I will stick with BOINC and the research that actually does publish and update their findings. Granted not all have to do with diseases and I am OK with that.

Moo! 9-) Gridcoin is a lot less about the money than CureCoin or FoldingCoin, as even a well-optimised setup doesn't do much more than cover it's electric usage. On the other hand, as I've mentioned elsewhere, I was doing RC5 (and DES and CSC) work for 19ish years before joining Moo Wrapper and Gridcoin made it possible FOR me to get the electric cost covered.... I think I've learned a bit about the subject of RC5-72 in the last .... 3922 days, AKA well over a decade, I've been working with that project. Now, off to see if I can get Canonical to get around to updating their BOINC version in the repository - they're STILL distributing 7.6.22 when it's been outdated for months now....
Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding. I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.
