my GTX 780 ti Kingpin needed an RMA... twice, and even when it did work I couldn't get any OC from it (ran way too hot as well). I'm not saying that's always the case, but I guess I got hit by bad luck too. It's not worth the premium for me now I know, as I don't plan to water cool or use extreme cooling, so personally I'll stick to more normal cards now.
I know it's always the luck of the draw to some degree, but if you get dealt a bad hand, it still loses it's appeal.




Luck of the draw? I thought luck was eliminated when buying a KingPin card. Doesn't EVGA selectively bin the GPUs? Of course they do, right?

I am wondering what the clocks will be? TI clocks are in step with the titan clocks which is a little disappointing...IMO the 980 KPE took way to much voltage to reach 1600 mhz and all the drivers after 347.25 were unstable for overclocking. Heck they are unstable for stock speeds!

Yes. Nycx has a good point, lol.

People don't realize, the gpu is binned AFTER it is mounted to the K|ngp|n. They don't rip the bad ones off and install new ones. If it makes the initial cut of base specified clocks, binning is complete.

I miss the days when the "flagship" custom cards were actually edgy and came with insane clock speeds.  NV has everyone by the balls nowadays and you end up with a stupidly overpriced card that can support 60000A  but the voltage is locked down and the silicon limits the overclock long before the PCB design does.

Don't think EVGA has ever said how they actually determine what gpus go into a Classy or Kingpin card.  Do they have test socket cards where they can drop a BGA die in and check its performance before soldering it to a PCB?
 
What I would really like to hear is NV or TSMC tells EVGA the SICC and IDV measurements for these die and let them select which chips they want to put where.  That's real binning....

Do you remember the 780ti classified reference and K|ngp|n reference? You know, the ones that didn't make the cut at specified base clocks, but the die was already mounted, so the sold them for a few dollars off so that the ones that only wanted the looks could actually get just the looks and none of the stock overclock.... That tells me the binning process I mentioned is part of the reality of things.

Yes, I plan to buy some. I did have a pair of titans but decided to sell them. Looking to buy something different as I've always bought reference cards in the past.

Pure complexes. That 2 pin will make difference, for sure, they will not have enough power without that 2 pin.
That's only because they want to make everything little above EVGA.
But someone need and to support with warranty later increased number of unstable cards among
highly overclocked models no matter on vendor.

That is funny as i have never had a reference card... I am looking to get rid of my kpe's for reference or possibly the hydrocopper. I am wondering what the clock speeds will be on the kpe ti. If we look at the 980's the kpe was about 25 mhz higher then the hydrocopper. The current hydro TI is @ 1228 boost. Wondering why the clocks are so much lower then the 980's....

The reason the clocks are lower is because the ti/titan use a faster chip. The 980 uses a slower chip.

It's excellent because Galaxy install power connectors on back side, that is much better from cable management.
OK for their cards that will not help much... But on EVGA cards example that could look better.
You see whole card, someone who install 3-4 of them have mess with cables.

Any ideas what the second Kingpin model is? just a variant without copper?  That wouldn't make a cost of production sense.    I can't figure it out...surely it's not just one without the backplate.  According to that listing it has the ACX 2.0 cooling.

It sure is pretty. I'm looking forward to the G1 review myself, but this card has a certain appeal. It's slimming looking.

Wow that looks awesome! I have a 780ti Kingpin now and love that card over clocked to 1300 on air no problem. This is Definitely my next upgrade.

I've never understood why people buy the kingpin. Its capable of high over clocks but certainly not on air. And I don't see people running liquid nitrogen for gaming sessions. Its purely a benchmarking card. For gaming its not worth the price of admission. Ever since the 780ti one came out I couldn't fathom somebody paying such a premium for a card that has fans on it.

I got the classifieds, which are the same as the k|ngp|n without as many features, and just put them under dry ice for the first time. 90% of people see big numbers on the Mhz scale and huge edition to their epeens scale, so they must have bigger number and spend more money, because it has to be better for gaming.. At 70c, the 980 KPE is bad.. Absolutely tanks 100% and crashes.

I have all 3 of mine cooled with waterblocks, and I have the pot's for ln2, but I am testing the 780 Classifieds before I move up to the 980s, which are irrelevant to the world since the TitanX and 980ti are out.

I will skip those two, and probably look at next year's flagship more than likely.

What was funny was watching all the epeen kids freak out during the days before the 980 KPE pre-order when I said they should allow the people that are going to use the extreme overclocking/benchmarking card as an extreme overclocking/benchmarking card get to order 24-48 hours before the others... That was fun to watch all of the people that strictly wanted to boost the status of their build freak out at that idea..

Good luck getting to 1600. KPE was a good paper weight under water. No support from it's namesake...the little support we did get from him was useless in sli and to get near and over 1600 required way to much voltage. IMO these maxwell cards do not scale to voltage as the prior ones did. Maybe it was just the horrible bios mods that they put out maybe not.  I will ever buy another KPE again.

seriously disappointing... Can you direct me to the post you mentioned? All i saw was a video of him talking about working on a bios for the "TI""

I'm running a reference 980ti at 1450mhz on air, no overvolt,doesn't get over 70° on load. Wait till I water cool it



 
Good luck getting to 1600. KPE was a good paper weight under water. No support from it's namesake...the little support we did get from him was useless in sli and to get near and over 1600 required way to much voltage.


^ that is the REAL disappointment although Vince posted over at the OCN he would be working on the 980 KPE for "us" .... I hope quickly as my lungs don't hold much air.

So really What are KP cards all about?
Well KP cards are 100% an enthusiast targeted card that is designed to do things OUT OF THE BOX (meaning no physical modification) that NO OTHER card can do. These KP designs are completely based on our LAB testing with heavily modded reference cards of every generation. We improve the vrm design, memory layout, and also pack it with extra features such as RGB LED, pcb heater, single slot capable, dips/jumpers, and a unique cooler. The kp card is essentially a HEAVILY modded reference card with an epower on it
Also the bin of the gpu is what determines how well a card clocks on air/water usually, you wont see huge difference between different cards with voltage control (classy/kp/strix/hof/etc) at these temps. The biggest differences you will see amongst these cards is how many mods/reworks a card needs to fly on LN2. All three KP cards need NONE, only XOC bios.

There will be robust bios support on 980 TI KP edition similar to 780 TI KP, you have my word on that. We (EVGA) are the only company right now that can XOC TI gpu, because I put in a lot of work on bios this past month for this latest version of maxwell.

I have the XOC bios ready for KPE 980ti already, and it works very very well. We did 2100mhz on 980Ti gpu yesterday live at computex. Meanwhile EVERY OTHER manufacturer is still overclocking titan-X at computex even though Ti is already released and just as fast . Why? Because not one single manufacturer other than evga has figured out how to extreme overclock 980ti yet due to a lot of things NV changed in their recent drivers. I was able to confirm it now after visiting with all my friends at the different vga vendors computex. Sadly 980 was delayed and came a bit late and ran up against titan-X. KP 980ti on the other hand has been done for awhile and it will be available quite soon and like I said bios is already set . Timing really makes a huge difference guys...

Not only will there be better bios support on kp 980ti, but also previous kp cards as well. I'm currently working 980/780ti to get them working the best on latest geforce drivers.

EVBOT is a product that should go hand in hand with these cards, but its been EOL for awhile now waiting for a much needed update. so we designed a much more advanced evbot control and put it into the new keyboard. Now you will have the proper tool I would highly recommend to get this if you are a fan of these cards as it will allow you to get the MOST out of your kp gpu and let it run to its full potential. It also helps with voltage control issues on air/water not just for XOC. New "keybot" as we call it internally lol should be available around same time as card release to retail. It's backwards compatible with older products and will have one master fw flash that can control EVERYTHING, no need for different fw flash for different products anymore.

I can still step up (45 days remaining) to the 980ti, but maybe I should wait and just buy another 980 KPE when you peeps start dumping them.   :)
