Was at work at Boeing in Washington.  I had just gotten to work when one of my co-workers told me a plane had crashed into the WTC.  I thought that was kind of odd, and since it was right after it happened the news reports didn't have all the details and it sounded at first like it was a Cessna type plane (and was what I assumed as well).  Then the truth came out.  Pretty much the whole day was shot just watching streaming news online.  Eventually over the next year I was personally impacted by 9/11 due to the layoffs Boeing implemented for 30,000 employees due to the economic hit on the industry.

I was very young as well at the time, 10 years old. I was at my grandpas house near my grade school for lunch and I was resting on his little foot stool watching tv when the breaking news report came on and said what was happening. I didn't much understand it, but I understood the consequences and that those buildings were full of people just like me and you.

It was a very sad time and I will never forget that it happened for as long as I live.

My condolences go out to those who lost loved ones in the terrible event, and those who are stuck with the memory.

I remember I was in my second week of college. I was in my townhouse sleeping with my 3 other roomates. My roomates phone would not stop ringing, he finally answered it and jumped out of bed to turn on the TV. He yelled to me in my bed to wake up, and told me planes hit the world trade centers. I didn't know what the world trade centers were (I knew when I saw them but I didn't know that was their name) All classes were cancelled that day. Very sad and gloomy day on campus.

I was listening to Howard Stern.  Made me think of the B25 which crashed into the Empire State Building back in July of 1945.  I thought it was one of his usual skits or something until I got into work and saw every TV in the place turned on to the news.

Went straight to my armory and we started to plan some relief efforts from across the river.  Spent quite a while on "bridges and tunnel details" and babysitting power plants.

I remember that day like it was yesterday, i was doing some work at a church and had just stepped out side for a smoke break, i started looking my pager, it was one of those pagers that got news feeds, and saw it scroll across that a plane had just hit the first tower, i went to my van and turned on the radio and few minutes after that they all of a sudden gasp and said another plane just hit the second tower. i could not move and listened for another hour as the pentagon was attacked and there were all kind of crazy reports of other planes. then i got a text page to go to the office, every one was there, about 400 people, and we just watched for a little while and then they told every one to go home for the day. 3 days after that i was at the office with about 30 other techs and we were loading all kinds of phone and data equipment in our vans and heading to new york, we had about 15 customers in the towers and surrounding buildings that our new york office serviced and they needed help setting up temporary office space for these customers, it was surreal, we worked for like 36hours that first day getting thing going and not one person complained and no one wanted to stop. i was there a total of 7 days working and even though was dead tired i remember every detail.

I was at work and had just gone into the break room when an upper management personnel walked in and told a co-worker and me that the Twin Towers was being attacked. My co-worker and I looked at each other puzzled, he had then told us to turn on the TV. He let us watch for about a minute,  then he told us we were to call in all necessary personnel because we are now under Emergency Status. He gave us a couple sheets and told us to call in every one on the paper.

As we were calling people in, we saw the second plane hit the second tower.

I had to work 16 hours that day and was on call for the next 7 days, because no one was sure if something else was going to happen again.

Also, remember, when I got home that day the airport looked vacant from where I lived. It is one of the major hubs of the US ... and being that quiet made me and I'm sure others nervous.

I was working just outside the River Bend Nuclear power plant, which is more or less right next to the Marathon Oil Storage facility. Then they announced the President was in Louisiana, and possible other targets. Two of those possible other targets were Nuclear Power plants, and Oil Storage facilities. Few minutes later the alerts went off at the plant for security lockdown. I learned just how fast my truck could move on the way home. As most Americans, I was horrified at first, then angered that someone had done this. I was in New Orleans for Katrina, and worked cleanup down there, and as bad as that was. It did not even come close to the feeling of loss as watching the events on 9/11. RIP to those that died, and prayers to those who survived and have to relive it in they're memories.

I was at the university attending the english language lesson. We were watching tv in the class instead of the normal lesson. The teacher was very democratic so we were watching the news chanel instead of studying. What we saw was terrible.

Another thing I recall is the USAF fighter jets flying extremely low around Manhattan and the Hudson (F16's I think?) on the day ...and in the days that followed the sound of those military jets flying patrol over NYC - particularly late at night when there were no other sounds but the deep high-altitude rumble of the jets.. again, quite surreal.

It was also fairly common to see the black helicopter gunships - often they would fly low right over our apartment building in Brooklyn, heading towards Manhattan (presumably we were on their assigned flight path). Very different sound from the normal police/news helicopters.

Many good people died that day. Please show respect to those that lost they're lives, and those that were there. If you feel the need to crap in this thread, please goto ground zero and spout that nonsense and you will get the response you are looking for.

Crazy you can gauge the differences in generations for just a decade. Hard for me to read people that said, "I was too young to remember" and "I was just a kid playing with my toys." It just doesn't register.

For me, I was a junior in High School walking into 3rd period Spanish class when I saw the first building on fire. Then only a few minutes later, I saw the second plane. I couldn't focus one bit because my uncle worked for NYPD and I knew that was his precinct. I failed my english test (4th period - later I retook the exam) because all I could think about was my uncle.

By the end of 4th period  the school notified me that my dad was on the line for me. He said that my uncle was at the site (pretty much the first officer on site), but NYPD moved him to the Empire State Building before the first building collapsed. He lost quite a few friends and co-workers that day.

All this feels like this happened yesterday. The memory and emotions still seem so vivid.

Re:9/11, Ten Years Later... 2011/08/16 13:48:27 (permalink)
I was on the school bus on the way to school. I was a Junior in high school, a high school that was primarily kids with military families (our town is next to a major military base called Fort Carson), and some families also came from military bases only a spits drive on the interstate (in all, there are 5 military bases/establishments in our area).

Anyway, I was really tired, as it was just after 6:50am. I overheard several kids talking. Over the normal noise on a school bus, it was hard to make out exactly what they were saying. Being half asleep didn't help much either. I kept hearing them mention that a plane flew into the World Train Center in New York. It make almost no sense to me. However, I figured a small plane probably crashed in Grand Central. I mean, if any place in New York was going to be called the World Train Center, it would have to be Grand Central.

In first class, no one really talked about it. But in second class, the teacher had the TV on. It was then that I got it was the World Trade Center. Made a bit more sense to me. But at the point everyone was in shock. When class started, the teacher turned off the TV and said its best to focus on school and not something that horrible. A good portion of the students objected.

By then parents from the nearby bases started showing up to school and pulling their kids out of class.

Last two classes of the day, both history classes, kept the TV on while the teachers talked to us about it. It was definitely meaningful for the teachers to actually discuss how the world really is, and why this happened.

I later found out that the bases went on full lock down. Students who lived on base with their parents got stuck for hours in traffic before they finally made it on base.

My best friend was stationed in Kuwait at the time. I remember him telling me that they suited up in chemical/gas warfare suits, erected make shift barricades at the entrances, then sat there with fully loaded 50 cal machine guns.

My dad was working in a skyscraper in Atlanta when the attacks happened. He said that after the general disbelief, they started to evacuate the buildings out of fear that the same would happen to them.

But after I got home that day from school, the whole family was glued to the TV. There was some discussion, but we mostly just watched the TV.

We tried calling my sister who was in College in Rhode Island at the time. It was difficult to get through, because the phone system simply couldn't handle all the calls going through the nation. Eventually we got a hold of her. Our biggest concern was that she may have gone to the towers that day, as she was always talking about going to visit them 'soon'.

Horrible day, my elder Dad was to get on a plane that morning to visit me, as all the airports shut down he was never able to see me. He was crushed and so disappointed, and with his age was not totally understanding of what had happened. His health did not allow him to make the trip later and has sense passed away. 9/11, I was sad, horrified, and angry all at the same time...the evil of it still pisses me off.

I remember it well. I was visiting my friend and we were sitting in the livingroom watching tv, then all of a sudden the news came on saying that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. I remember it being very surreal and at first i dont think we even realized what had really happened. But unfortunately it was very real.

I live in scandinavia, but when this happened 10 years ago, i felt much much closer than you would think.

9/11 will never be forgotten.

I had graduated HS earlier that year and was waiting for college to start later that month. My Mom came downstairs, freaking out telling me to turn on my TV. West Coast time zone, so I was sleeping and I was pretty scared just by how upset she was.

Like many others I spent the day glued to the TV, horrified.
