What’s the advantage of a higher power limit?

Well, simply put, it allows for higher and more stable clock speeds, especially when the card is put under water and temperature isn't a concern any longer. With the default 366W vBIOS, you're super limited in that regards, even with undervolting to something lik 0.800V or even lower than that since you're constantly hitting the cards power limit.

Asus is apparently releasing a tuf bios, cmon evga tuf has 2x8pin aswell, show xc3 some love.

Both bios from xc3 & xc3 ultra are stated 340 to 366w but won't go past 340w.
 

 

 

Not sure whats going on there, but my 3090 XC3 Ultra is definitly going up to 366W max (before clocks start fluctuating cause it's actually hitting power limit). Afterburner says 104% power, which should be 105% (EVGA program says 105%).
 
Anyway, even 366W is not nearly enough for a 3090 to achieve decent stable clocks. 400W would be sufficient I guess, with some undervolting applied.

They will be hitting the GPU Chip power limit. Which is 200W on 3080 XC3 and 250W on 3090 XC3.
On high leakage chips you wont even hit the board power limit because of the chip power limit being hit first.aa

You can look back to page 1 for the scaling my card had with power.
Nearly 1000 points in port royal going from 366W to 390W.
Then another 700 point going from 390W to 450W.

We wont ever get a bios over 375W since thats the max spec of the slot and 2X 8 pins.
But there are some issues they need to fix up with the bios.
Losen up the chip power draw on the 3080 xc3 so every one can use the full board power.
Release a 375W bios for the 3090 XC3, A power slider up to 400W would be nice but doubt it would happen.

Uh, 375W is a strong “recommendation”. The FE card can draw up to 400W with two 8-pins hooked up to the adapter. You can absolutely draw 400W through two 8-pins safely on a decent PSU, but that also depends on how confident the AIB is on the board quality and how close that would bring it to their fancy flagship model with three 8-pins.

So you did flash the Gigabyte Gaming OC BIOS to the XC3 card? Did you notice any difference regarding video-ports or anything else behaving differently?

I might just do the same once I get my water block... unless, of course, there'll be an official EVGA vBIOS update :)

Other have reported the middle one being disabled while on that bios.
The Aorus master bios tho I only have HDMI and DP1 that work, Thats another 390W bios.

Any luck with the Gigabyte Bios? Any suggestion or things to report? No issue? No fan problem? Using X1 or Afterburner or both? Sorry to shout but I'm really trying to get some more idea with this XC3 black I got. The power limit appears very strict and the slider do nothing.

I just flash the FTW3 bios onto my XC3 works fine gives you around a 400w power limit.

Which one specifically?

I used the FTW3 Ultra bios, force flashed the default bios off TPU then just updated using the exe from the forum, its been running sweet for 3 days zero issues.

Oh. Interesting. I only tried doing the 94.02.26.48.88 directly, didn't do the one with an extra update and it yielded no performance improvement. Can you tell me what your current bios are in GPU-Z if you have the time? 

Will have to check when I get home, the FTW3 is just a XC3 with a extra 8pin and extra VRMs for power delivery apart from that its a reference board with extra temp sensors, pretty sad to tell the truth.

Any luck on the bios version that you are using? Just wanted quick confirmation before I jump to do the same thing. Since I'm not sure I already tried that bios.

I tried to get in touch with Jacob on Twitter today and he actually confirmed that there's no plan to increase power limit on the XC3 due to cooling and VRM solutions.
It sucks because I have great temps on my 3080 XC3 Ultra but the card just can't sustain 2.0Ghz under heavy load (sometimes not even 1900), and it's all because of the power limit. 320w is extremely restrictive, i feel like even a small bump into the 350-360 could be great for us.
I really hope they'll reconsider, I don't think an extra 40w would set my card on fire.

Yeah. Even if the power slider works as advertised it would be great. 330 * 1.08 would still be 356. Which is more than enough to at least perform similarly to other AIBs. I don't need anything else. Just get that slider actually working would be wonderful even if we don't get the full 366w as stated in the bios.
 

Just found this thread after a little reading, I'll be replacing my 3080 FE with the 3080 xc3 ultra hybrid.  Kind of was wondering if there would ever be a bios update to increase the power limit now that we have these hybrid cards?
