Ty. Someone came by and got it all sorted it, family friend. It was doing some really weird things. Your write up helped me learn a bunch and I passed on as much information as was needed.

Latest whql. I had issues installing over the top from previous drivers on 2 different machines. Windows 7 64 bit 550 Ti and system in my sig. Extremely bad video stuttering when watching videos. Especially with the Windows 8 machine. First time I had ever installed drivers over the top since apparently. It is now safe to do and suggested. Now the fix. I simply uninstalled drivers on both machines and reinstalled them. Problem solved on both machines. Videos now run smooth as butter. I do not know what happened that caused this on 2 different machines. I am now hesitant to install over the top ever again.

The 310.70 are quite quirky and I do NOT suggest them for 500 series users.

The last few driversets appear to exhibit "random" install issues.
*Problems with Precision/Afterburner if not shut down and/or uninstalled
*Problems with "other" background software, the Asus AI being the worst
*Issues with non standard Admin/UAC and OS setups

Dont let this experience sour you, its probably a bug in the driver/installer in these latest sets...
The process of Custom/Clean over-installs has been working perfectly.

You correctly approached the problem with a second install and that was the ticket!
Good job

I did want to mention something very interesting that happened to me as I followed your guide to uninstalling old drivers just about an hour ago. It has nothing to do with your instructions being wrong by any means. Its just something that I thought was interesting, and worth mentioning.

I did everything step by step ( wouldn't do it any other way) interestingly once I had uninstalled the Nvidia Files in the order you describe and rebooted my computer, Windows would then install some other version of Drivers for my GTX 680. Now I know you said That something like this could indeed happen, and in case it did, you said to disable the internet connection temporarily so Windows wouldn't try to update the drivers on its own.  (read along)

So I did, I followed every single step (In order). I made sure to change the Windows Update settings as you instructed and to uninstall the Nvidia Files in the same order you instructed, leaving the Nvidia Graphics Driver File for last, then reboot.  I must state again, I followed everything as instructed. (read along)

Even before I uninstalled the Nvidia Files, I had deleted the Drivers inside the Display Driver folder, just as you instructed. Which was one of the first steps.

I just said I deleted  every Driver inside the Display Driver Folder, and that I changed the Windows Update settings, so Windows wouldn't automatically update the Cards drivers.  Then as you said it that it could happen, upon reboot windows still installed another version of Nvidia Drivers because I was still connected to the internet. So I disabled the internet (Unplugged the Lan cable)

Now, here is what happened and I find interesting. For some reason even after I had disable the internet and changed the Windows Update settings, Windows automatically installed Drivers for my GTX 680, but I had no internet!! Lol. Now it would make sense that this would happen if I hadn't deleted the Drivers inside the Driver Folder or where connected to the internet, but I did!

It did this to me 2 different times! HAHA. With no Internet and with no files in the Driver Folder! Odd huh?
Every time it was a previous version, like it was rolling back.
So I had to reboot and uninstall every time, for almost 4 times until I finally just got the VGA update, and not the Nvidia GTX 680 one.

So I say this because I think is worth mentioning the importance of properly uninstalling and installing drivers.
I think that If I had done (Found) the steps you mention in your Ultimate Nvidia Driver guide every time I installed new Drivers, I wouldn't have had any of these problems.

Very good guide by the way! Again, thanks!

So I must ask. As of now 12/29/12 What Driver do you recommend for the GTX 680? (None SLI)

This is because the roll back versions of the driver are stored in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository not in the C:\Nvidia folder.
This is for informational purposes only. I do not recommend deleting for modifying files in the driver store.

Realizing this post is quite old I have a couple of questions?
( 1 ) If your running SLI, after installing the new driver, is there a need to dowload it again AFTER enabling the SLI or wha tsteps need to be taken to achieve both cards recieve the driver OR do they both run off  the driver at the same time?
( 2 ) Is it necessary to uninstall EVGA Precision or other VGA related monitoring software then re-install them as well?
I have two 560ti's set in SLI & was wonding about the PROPER way to install drivers in reguards to each card!

#1
There is no need to reinstall the driver for a SLI setup.
After the driver is installed, you simply go into the NVCP and turn ON SLI

#2
It is critical that programs like Precision or "other" such monitoring software be SHUT down -and- disabled from starting at Boot -BEFORE- working with your Nvidia drivers (installing). Failure to do so can result in all kinds of problems and should not be done.

Hope that answers your questions

The 310.70 are quite quirky and I do NOT suggest them for 500 series users.

Are 310.90 any good for 580's?
I followed the instructions stated in this thread for the last 6 or 7 driver updates. When I installed 310.90 recently I had nothing but crashes. I had to reinstall the whole OS.

I am on the 310.90's and they are running perfectly for my 580 SLI setup
No crashes or issues of anykind to report.

When you installed the drivers...
-->did you uninstall Precison or Afterburner (before beginning the Driver install) and answer NO when asked to save profiles and data? and then one reboot after the uninstall, and THEN go to Custom/Clean install the driver?
Alwayd reboot once after the driver install is complete and then put back in Precision (check for a newer version of Precision first)

Looking over your posted config, are you running anything overclocked?

No, you do NOT need to remove system overclocks for installing Nvidia driversets

Precision/Afterburner must -always- be properly ShutDown before doing -any- uninstall or install of Nvidia driversets.
*This is currently one of the -major- causes of user reported issues

I'm running 197.45 drivers in my GTX 285 and these temperatures are extreme. The 306.xx drivers seemed to run cooler. Driver fusion's latest version now asks that I buy premium to remove registry entries where as previous versions did not so I'm screwed in that department.

I looked at your newer guide however. Would I be fine just doing a clean install over these current drivers with a newer version or should I uninstall them first via the uninstall programs list?

Given how old those drivers are, I would uninstall the components one at a time in Programs and Features (Graphics driver last)
And then Custom/Clean install the new ones (with perform a Clean install checked)
*Dont forget, if you are using Precision -uninstall- it fist and answer NO when prompted to save data and profiles.
After the new driver is installed and REBOOTED once, then you can reinstall Precision (use only the latest version 3.0.4)

Hi. I'm having trouble uninstalling PhysX System Software 9.12.0604.
I get the error:

"There was a problem starting C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corportaion\Installer2\installer.4\NVI2.DLL
The specified module could not be found."

Does this mean that it is already uninstalled? I tried uninstalling the NVIDIA Graphics Driver after that message but in the middle of the uninstall I get a black screen and I need to reboot my computer. Only after the reboot I am able to uninstall the driver.
When I try to install the newer version (310.90) I get another error about PhyX System Software failing to install.

Any ideas?

Go to Programs and Features
Uninstall PhysX (do NOT uninstall anything else)

Go to Windows Update and make sure its set correctly "to check for updates, but let YOU choose to download and install them"

Now reboot
Launch the 310.90 installer in CUSTOM MODE
Uncheck ALL items except for PhysX
Be SURE to put the checkmark in the Box that says "perform a clean install"
After the install is complete, reboot once

No open the Nvidia control panel / HELP / System Information / Components TAB
It will show you the installed PhysX component version number (show below for 310.90)

Thanks for the reply.
The only problem is that I can't uninstall PhyX through control panel. Gives me this error code:
"There was a problem starting C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corportaion\Installer2\installer.4\NVI2.DLL
The specified module could not be found."

That would be damage to the file path then
Try a Custom/Clean overinstall as posted below (do NOT attempt uninstall anything at this time)
Make sure Precison (if used) is uninstalled and answer NO when asked to save data and profiles
Go to Windows Update and make sure its set correctly "to check for updates, but let YOU choose to download and install them"

Reboot once to the desktop before beginning the Driver install attempt

Launch the 310.90 installer in CUSTOM MODE
Uncheck ALL items except for PhysX

After the install is complete, reboot once
