ganji Hi maniac firstly id like to thank you for making this thread as ive just switched from ati and had no clue when it comes to nvidia driver installs. i have do have a question though and sorry if its been asked b4. where you say to delete the old driver folders from inside the display driver folder. do i do this before uninstalling everything or after but before rebooting? reading ur post i would think before. sorry again for the dumb question No reason to delete the drivers in the Nvidia folder -unless- you have been having real problems. Since you have a new install and no problems, I would just skip that step

Blue screen tearing sounds like a config issue, not a driver problem You might want to shut down, reseat the cards and the SLI bridge before installing another driver

ello again running 2 way sli 670's on 2 x Hanns-G HL231 60Hz, 1920x1080 conected via dvi. the game is only running on the single screen and not spanning both. when i launch planetside2 beta i get the horizontal blue lines about 2" high. Battlefield 3 when launched is blue and distorted looking but i can still see the game underneath but when i alt tab out into a window the blue goes. thanks again its very much apreciated :D EDIT: i found a couple of leftover ati drivers eventhough id ran driver sweeper and ccleaner when i switched to nvidia(not because of probs with ati). so removed the ati stuff and did a clean install as per your guide and now everything is honkey dorey :D thanks for your help maniac its much apreciated :D

Solution for control panel failure causing driver rollback
2012/11/11 21:23:42
(permalink)
I had been unable to install any driver past 270.61 on my GTX-580 - the control panel install would fail and the driver would roll itself back. With some kind assistance from several nVidia techs, I now have a solution for the 306.97 driver on Win7-64. After adding C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Display\ to the PATH variable, I un-installed all the nVidia drivers and did DriverSweeper while in safe mode (as well as deleting the C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation folders). I installed 306.97 using the 'clean setting' and only installed PhysX, and now, after many, many months, have a driver and control panel!!!

Hi maniac! Great guide you have here. I have a question about nVidia Control Panel custom profiles though, as it would seem that going the route you suggest for installing new drivers would completely nuke custom nVidia Control Panel profiles. Is there any elegant way to avoid doing this? I have custom profiles for quite a few games, and always worry about them getting deleted when I do clean uninstall/installs, so for the last update I avoided doing a clean install. Since we are now at release 310 drivers, I am not willing to accept anything besides a clean install, and the only way I know of avoiding losing all custom profiles is to back them up one-by-one with nVidia Inspector. As someone who obviously spends alot of time messing with nVidia settings/drivers (I saw your BFBC2 guide.. LOL), what would you recommend to make this process as convenient/streamlined as possible when updating drivers? Thank you!

Return your card to 100% stock defaults, and make sure the Precision is NOT set to "Start with Windows" then ShutDown Precision/Afterburner and do one reboot. After the reboot run the driver installer of your choice in Custom Mode and use the "Clean" install option. You issue would appear to be releated to the driver changing your cards behavior, thus causing your previous overclock to be unstable. After the new driver is installed with the card at default settings, you can then attempt to redo your overclock.

Thats a great question The only way to save setup custom profiles is to NOT use the Clean install option. Since you appear to be on 310.xx the perform a clean install option does NOT have to be used, until such time as the driver or driver/behavior changes significantly -or- you are having a problem. A Clean install should however -always- be used when moving backwards with a driver version. Right now the simplest method is using Nvidia inspector or screenshots and punching them back in. Both are less than optimal... -->Using NVinspector can generate errors should the driver basis change, and punching profiles back in is a pain if you have alot of them In the old days you could copy out the profile data and paste it into the new driver location. This method appears not to work correctly anymore and the last time I tried it totally corrupted the Nvidia install..... *I am working on a updated Guide and will have alot more information, testing and methods for the exact issue you describe. http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1776353

ok followed your guide to the letter. after uninstalling the current driver i reboot, windows installs the VGA adapter. reboot again and now i have a NVCP saying that it installed 306.23. I have downloaded 306.97. the whole reason for this is to try and get CS:GO to work. i even tried using a driver sweeper to blow everything out. and i really dont feel like doing a fresh windows install....

The reason CS:GO is having issues is the OpenGL version in the driver *You need to go to the CS:GO website and find out what driver or game patch is needed, then either patch or use a known driver version with the OpenGL version that works

My FSX-machine also suffered the Black Screen of Death (System i7-2600k, 8GB DDR3, GeForce TGX 560 Ti 1GB on W7-64 Bit).
After screwing around with driver updates, going back and forth BEFORE reading your excellent manual, my system was already quite messed up.
Since my card is still under warranty and it was pretty obvious, that even your manual wont help anymore, I return my crapped out 560 and will receive a new GTX 560 in the next days. So far so good... -----
The point, where I couldn't 100% follow your manual is: You suggest, first to uninstall PhysX and last the old driver. But I could only enter safe mode with the corrupted driver IN (where you can NOT uninstall PhysX) or uninstall the driver first, then get the VGA adapter, boot normal again und finally uninstall PhysX.
So... how to uninstall PhysX first, when you only are able to boot in save mode?
BTW: Had some good laughs reading your stuff about how stupid the industry got... people like you are the heroes of the internet. Thx for your time!

Maniac I followed your wonderful guide however I have been having a few problems. Now after freaking out the first time when 310.70 threw its fit I did go into safemode (Stupid of me, oh so very stupid) which self installed some drivers however I then immediately backed out and uninstallled those drivers (they were 310.61) which had the same problem as that listed below. As you might imagine im freaking out. What happens is I follow all the steps (uninstall in the control panel) until I get to the graphics display driver. Whereupon I select it and click uninstall and it starts. However the black screen flash never recovers. It simply stays black. So i have to reboot my computer and lo and behold while the computer acts like there isnt a driver installed with the low resolution and other factors, the actual driver is still installed. However this time I can unisntall it without any black screen flashing. I can then normally install my driver. Mainly im concerned that this will corrupt something and mess with my drivers. I have tested this twice with 310.70 and the latest WHQL drivers 306.97 I believe. I did run a benchmark in CoH and that all SEEMED fine. No distortions or artifacts and a constant 60fps. IM using a gtx 570. EDIT: I did select advanced options and used clean install to reset all the previous settings and such to reduce the chance of previous inconsistencies messing with things. 2 EDIT: Following your corrupt drivers section I ran evga afterburner for 15minutes which turned up absolutely nothing. In addition NVIDIA control panel is telling me the driver I wanted to install is installed. If this is in the wrong place please let me know if I should PM you or something.

Welcome to the EVGA forums I would appear you are running a monitor that has issues redetecting the signal from the videocard after the driver is installed. This most often occurs when using a TV or post-processing TV monitor. In these cases (black screen) all the is often needed is to turn the monitor power OFF and then back ON Just what make/model of monitor are you using, and what type of cable and any adaptors are you using? Also: " I did go into safemode (Stupid of me, oh so very stupid) which self installed some drivers however I then immediately backed out and uninstallled those drivers (they were 310.61" This should be incorrect if you are in Safe mode and have turned OFF installing device drivers in Windows Update as shown in the guide. This would seem to show a Admin rights issue related to login The bottom line is after the driver uninstall, black screen and then reboot, it appears you driver goes in and is working correctly. Thats the result wanted, however you get there. *Important Once you have 301.24 or higher drivers installed, it is no longer needed to uninstall before putting in a driver. Simply shut down Precision (or Afterburner) reboot once and then install the driver in Custom mode with clean install checked. Rebbot once after the install is completed.
