Seems like a vary knowledgeable thread. I have a 3090 hybrid XC3 at home in a box that just arrived but I literally just got the email to buy the FTW3 3090 hybrid. Anyone here able to break down how much better the FTW3 is vs the XC3 ?

Not sure if I should just save the 200$ difference and use the XC3 hybrid or return it and buy the FTW hybrid

Xc3 18 power stages 366w powerlimit
Ftw3 23 power stages 450w powerlimit

If you're going to oc go ftw3, if you're going to plug and play stick with xc3.

I'm going to test out the undervolt I had on earlier at some point, it was something like 2040MHz @ 981mV, tested through Port Royal just fine, and gave me a higher score than a +105 offset, while running 3-5C cooler throughout the test.

I'm definitely happy with the performance of the cooler so far, that's for sure.  I want to set it up in push/pull, but with my current mounting situation, that will be "fun", and not the good kind. lol

I think these clocks are dependent on workload. I can run higher clocks on PR as well, but significantly lower in a game like RDR2.

Yeah push/pull can get tricky. I had to sit my pull fans on the top of my case :p

What update from the Factory? I have a day one 'regular' card, no issue hitting 500 with XOC...

There was a firmware update for the early-launch 3080s that Precision X1 prompted people to install on first use, not sure if the 3090s had it as well or not.

pellaaa
ah good to know! do you suggest to use XOC bios also without oc and for daily usage? i have 1200w psu

If you're not going to OC the card for daily use, the XOC BIOS doesn't even have much of a point in being installed, unless you just want the extra power target "because it exists", it serves no real purpose if you're not OCing a lot.

If I were you I'd look in to undervolting.  You can either get an overclock while running cooler and less voltage, or if you want to run "stock" speeds, you can undervolt quite a bit and thusly have much lower temps than what "stock" normally runs at.
Even on the Hybrid card, I'm seeing a decent temperature decrease at 1995/1980MHz @ 950mV.  I imagine the 1935MHz @ 900mV would run even cooler that I was testing earlier, and that's pretty much where the card runs at stock, at least speed wise, but it runs 1905-1935MHz while using 1.05V+, resulting in much higher temps.

ok thanks mate for undervolting i have to edit the whole curve? i mean edit voltage for each frequencies range or i can just apply a global undervolt offset?

I would consider what you're actually going to do with the card.  Are you going to push for high OCs, trying to squeeze every last bit of performance out of it for the sake of longevity (and for the fun of it) or just plug the card in & go?

The FTW3 will overclock better, period, because it has superior power delivery (3 plugs vs 2) and a higher power target, full stop.  I'm sure the XC3 probably runs cooler & the performance difference unless you push to the limits on the FTW3 will probably only be 1-2FPS in most titles that are GPU-bound already.  Maybe 5FPS tops, depending on your resolution.

I'm gonna have to hammer this 3090 myself for the next 24 hours to make up my mind on if I want to take a shot at the 3080 Hybrid or just stick with this thing for the foreseeable future, GPU wise.

So far, temps wise, it has definitely impressed me, performance wise, I haven't looked at enough to make a call yet.  The performance is DEFINITELY not worth the price difference overall, but considering I've recouped most of what I ended up spending on this thing by the time I'm done getting rid of my 3080 FTW3 Ultra (adding in the funds of my resold already 1080 Ti FTW3 Hybrid & the 2070 Super XC Hybrid I used for 2 weeks before my 3080 got here).  That to me, in my head at least, makes this 3090 "actually cost" less than it did :-P lol

I do undervolting in Afterburner.  It's a lot simpler there.  What I do is apply a -290 clock (so that every part of the curve is underclocked), apply that.  Then hit Control+F, then you pick the box for the voltage you want to use (i.e. 950mV or whichever), drag it up to the speed you want, and click apply.  Save it to a profile once you're sure it's stable, and you can use it whenever you like.

Today I think I'm gonna remount the radiator with push-pull, because it sure as heck, as expected, does put out serious heat under load even with a 240mm radiator.  I think Push/Pull will further help temps.

Good call. Yeah these cards need a custom loop really, but I didn't want to deal with the hassle of that

Didn't happen to get a length on those hoses did you? It's going to be quite a reach in my case.

I can tell you the GPU hoses are reaching the EXACT same position as my CPU hoses are, the CPU ones are strained (even though they're traveling less distance), the GPU ones are still pretty relaxed.

Illustration of what I'm refering to:

From where the tubes go IN TO the card, to where the tubes touch the fittings on the radiator (so ACTUAL usable/moveable tube length) looks to be slightly more than 400mm, I can't get an exact exact measurement with it installed because of the curves in the lines.

You would definitely need an open loop with a full coverage block if you want the best VRM & vRAM temps on the 3090, that's for sure.  Because even with this absolute unit on it, VRMs are still getting in to the 50s/low 60s... which is better than in the 70s on air, but still, not even close to a full liquid loop setup's temps I'd bet.

at idle it only runs ~1390RPM, at which it makes no noticeable "noise"... at full speed, there's definitely a bit of pump whine - But I'm fairly certain the Gen2 Thermaltake Floe like what I have is a Gen5 Acetek pump, so that's sort of to be expected.

Yeah Gen5 is what I have in my AIO, have it set to max speed in Bios, cant hear it at all even with my ear as close as I can listen to it.   Gen6 seems to be the villain for a few, that's the one I'm worried about but based on yours it seems to be okay?

As far as my ears can tell, there is zero noticeable pump noise coming from the GPU area - and my ears are pretty sensitive i.e. I can hear people's phones ringing from most of the way across our house and the like lol

I even put my phone up next to it to see if it could hear something I maybe can't because of the fans - I heard nothin' from it, but I did hear something from it being next to my CPU block - so I think it's a good one.

There ARE very clearly some BAD ones out there though, that one guy's grinding sound pump OOF - I hope they got him taken care of, cuz that pump sounded like it was in the process of destroying itself at a rather rapid rate.

Heres how I did push/pull on my case. I also have a pcie slot fan array of three 90mm fans blowing onto the backplate since it gets so hot with the memory and all.

Looks like I got lucky with the Lian Li riser cable, I ran the pcie express test on 3dmark and my gpu has almost the exact same bandwidth it would if it was plugged directly into the mobo.

Got the hybrid ftw3 ultra today. Performance is great but the noise coming from the AIO is very noticeable during idle/surfing the net. I will be calling support in the morning.

3080 or 3090?  Sorry to hear you're having pump noise issues, hopefully support will get you taken care of, especially if it's actually abnormal sounds that indicate a serious problem - out of curiosity, you do have the GPU radiator mounted above the GPU as the guide included with the card indicated right?  Having the radiator below the GPU will result in a lot of pump noise as that makes any air in the system get "stuck" near the pump a lot of the time.

Also, as a suggestion, try removing the card (but leaving the radiator mounted, assuming it's at the top of your case) and give it a light shake back & forth a few times to dislodge any bubbles that might be stuck in the pump area - that could be a simple fix that may solve your noise issue.

Thought I'd copy pasta this to this thread so people can have a giggle at something that happened to a reviewer happening to a normal consumer as well:

SOoooooooooooooooooo

Apparently either a firmware or some other form of update is definitely needed here, outside of the fact that it won't hit the "500W" power limit:
I noticed during testing, both with OC Scan, and with Port Royal, that occasionally in GPUz, something would pop up, for just one sliver of the graph, that I've never seen before on PerfCap: Red.  Red means Thermal (for those like me that have never seen it).  I immediately went "That is literally impossible, Hybrid card, highest temps iCX is seeing are in the low 60s on some Mem & VRM areas".  I figured it had to be an erroneous reading of some sort, and sure enough, after gaming for a bit just now, HWInfo just so happened to pick "it" up - I'm not sure if this is something that can be "fixed" or not, but if so, it definitely should be lol:

To borrow a GN line: "To my knowledge, the inside of my GPU did not exceed the temperature of the Sun during testing."

Edit: this has happened twice now that HWInfo has picked up - if it continues I may contact support just to see if they think I should RMA it or if it's anything to actually worry about.   This time it was a reading of over 100C on a memory iCX sensor for a split second - obviously it didn't actually hit that or the card would've throttled itself to prevent damage.

That's literally what I have been getting since I first got my GPU although I've never experienced crashes or anything wrong except for those readings in HWINFO.

3090 version. Yes, mounted on the top. The noise is def coming from the gpu/pump. I will do that now. Leave the radiator connected and shake the card a bit and re-insert.

3090 version. Yes, mounted on the top. The noise is def coming from the gpu/pump. I will do that now. Leave the radiator connected and shake the card a bit and re-insert.

Secondary question: are you traditionally mounted, or vertically mounted (showing off the card)?  I've heard a lot of people have noticably worse pump noise when vertically mounting, but I'd assume from the sound of it that's not the case for you.

Do you mean the hybrid bios won't reach 500W...?

Do You have metro exodus?, you can try this

Nice.  I think you'll be very happy with it, I am with mine so far.

Took this shot just a bit ago because someone asked for the airflow profile/whether or not my GPU radiator is setup as top exhaust:

The pump noise thing is really scaring me away from this card.

It shouldn't the vast majority don't have problems.

3DMark Time Spy Extreme @ completely stock on the GPU: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/54968818 9108 - that takes down my previous best of 8932 (which was heavily OCed on the 3080) easily, but not by a lot.  Interesting.

Even more interesting:

489W maximum power draw  While I'm happy to see it at least near the advertised 500, I am disappointed it's that close, at STOCK, granted the voltage is way higher than it needs to be for that given frequency, but it seems the headroom even with the higher BIOS stuff, isn't really there.

I'll continue this testing after some sleep, been up for 29 hours & I'm officially exhausted.

Pump noise is subjective. Personally it's definitely audible since I ramp all my fans down at idle. Don't hear it while gaming. My guess is the pump is 2000+ rpms judging from the noise

Hey there. Can you check the average board power draw during a run? High power spike readings are very common and does not mean the xoc bios is working. I've had spikes over 500w but never close to 500 on average. For those that have the bios working, they will draw about 500 watts average, not max.

That's literally what I have been getting since I first got my GPU although I've never experienced crashes or anything wrong except for those readings in HWINFO.
