for those curious -- these are the smaller standoffs that EK sent me.  They sent two, one for each of the two waterblocks I have.

 thank you for contacting us. 
 We recommend that you open an RMA ticket where you purchased the graphics card. One customer informed us that after a successful RMA replacement of the graphics card and reinstallation of our FTW3 water block, everything works as it should be. The problem must have occurred while removing the stock cooler. After you receive a new graphics card from RMA, we recommend that you remove the stock cooler very slowly   and carefully. Stock thermal paste and thermal pads are very sticky and can damage the graphics card when removing the air cooler if you are not careful. Make sure to heat up the GPU with some benchmarking to loosen up the thermal pads.

This is really interesting I just got a message from EKWB Support telling me sending me two standoffs and show me where they should go which contradicts this picture above.

And, from what I can tell, you both have 3090's so it's not like that's the difference.

Yes I do have 3090 just waiting for RMA. I will try and mount the block and backplate when I get the RMA card. I did have the Red Lips Card if that helps anyone when I first tried this.
 

Personally i would go with a different block. There's just too much of a coincidence for me to accept. Sure, it could be stress on taking the card apart, or it could be a contact issue with the EK block/pad setup.  

Just a little update on my cards/block. I contacted EK multiple times now trying to get something done with this paperweight. They have still not mentioned standoffs or a new design to me. The responses I get from them are there is nothing wrong with the block, open a RMA if you want. I opened a RMA and they told me they wont RMA the block there is nothing wrong(still blaming customers for bricking cards with bad handling and EVGA for sub par board construction). They then told me to contact my retailer because they dont do RMAs on blocks not bought from their store. I contacted my retailer and they are waiting for a EK response.
 
Those of you looking to put the block on a RMA card I would wait until the design changes. I bricked my 1st RMA card instantly. My original card ran for about a month before bricking randomly. Hopefully my retailer will have some kind of pull to get the issue addressed.

Just wanted to give update. Installed EK block and backplate and used the standoffs EK sent me. Success it is booting. I will report back when I get it back in the loop.

So got my RMA card today. It came with the black lips. Now the question is do I temp to install this EKWB block again or I leave it on air. I can not decide.

I installed a Alphacool Block and backplate, no issues. My Ek Block and Back plate are sitting in their packages, paper weights, junk wont install them, won't sell them to any1.

Yeah I understand I was about to go that route but decided let me give it another shot. I put the two stand offs EK gave me on the block. Made them ship me new pads and cut the and put them on card. This time cleaning new card was easy the paste was not all over the place. Installed the block and tested card without back plate and booted. I did pads on back plate and covered the other parts in back of board shown in this thread and booted again and no issues. It is in my loop and have ran 3d mark . Rebooted few times too and ran heaven. Temps are about 52 on GPU and 67 on memory. No overclocking yet.

are you planning to get their active backplate when they come out?

I'm still not clear where the replacement stand offs go. I have the block & the card & I really don't want to mess up the card if I need to procure these modified stand offs
 

I see that but do you add the standoff to the existing ones or do the existing ones unscrew? Because the exisitng ones almost look like the are machined out of the block and are not removable

Remove the existing one. Trust me they are not machine out.

Wait so did EK tell you the one standoff in the bottom left corner that needs to be replaced or is it the two bottom MIDDLE ones that you need to replace? I'm assuming the picture with two red circles is yours and the one that is a schematic to be EK's. Which one is the one we should follow is what I am asking basically.

It would really be helpful if EK would publish some additional information on this topic like how to identify if your block needs this modification.
