Don't worry about anything getting stuck. I have enough hardware and lube to make anything work around here. More pics coming soon. Made some progress in the wee hours of last night.

In due time friend.
If anyone find themselves in PA, go visit a place called Cabelas. Its a sportsmans paradise. Even the kids get a kick out of the indoor aquarium and all the "stuffed animals".
On my way home from a weekend getaway only to go right back in the basement. Have to calculate the tinsle strength of drywall screws, drill - tap & countersink somewhere around 3 dozen holes, and rig up a 60 lbs counterbalance. Should be an interesting evening.

ok, NOT getting the counterbalance done tonight. I will be lucky if I finish the 40 some holes to drill in the column reinforcements.

A better look at the back of the column reinforcements. 38 3/8" holes drilled, tapped, and countersunk in 1" thick aluminum bars. Should prove VERY sturdy. Here I am enlisting the help of a clamp and 2x4 to mimic a second set of hands. I was trimming a little bit from the bottom of the column because I got some fiberglass resin in the area where the bottom of the column normally goes. I can't wait to get back to machining the block, instead of this re-build, but hey... I had to do it.

Success and Failure all rolled up in an evening here at the blockshop... Success: Failure: That fancy sliding fixture idea is a good one, but poor material selection on my part. The cast iron couldn't take the stress of me bolting it to the column. It did survive the test even thought it was broken. All hope is not yet lost. I will try my luck at welding & reinforcing it. Then when that fails I will learn my lesson and make a new one from scratch

Yes. Lube your parts, and they will not fail you. I am debating whether grease is better then oil to lube the dovetail ways.
I have almost recovered from the broken Z axis part. Things are falling into place.
I'll have a better idea on a price once i finish it.

MUCH better motor mounting arrangement: Again, all I have to get surfaces parallel to each other is to turn a piece of round scrap on the lathe, which explains that round piece under that black bearing block. It takes a while to turn anything on my lathe. Now I have to adapt that other round motor mount to that scrap (and finally square) plate that I can bolt to the column. That little black disc is called an Oldham coupler. It allows to shafts that are not 100% concentric to each other to be aligned. Really facinating explination of one here: http://www.mekanizmalar.com/oldham.html

I won, as in i beat the machine! Generally you need a mill, to build another mill (think skynet, machines making machines). But since I don't have one, I had to rely back on my hand tools and simple powered tools (bandsaw, drill press etc). I have all the parts now, but still have to assemble everything, wire it up, hook up fluid, and probably do another coat of the resin/sand mix. I trust that more then the concrete. Sorry this is turning into a machine thread, but once the machine is done... its back to this block.
