Hi everyone. I'm new to both PC building and EVGA. Just got my first video card as EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3 and very exciting about it. However, there's a buzzing sound from the graphic card. I've searched all videos I could find on Youtube about coil whines and I think the sound is pretty much similar. Though the buzzing sound is not very loud but to be honest it is the loudest sound in my chassis.
I'm using an EVGA 1200 Platinum PSU and I've tried my friends' 1080 Ti FE edition in my rig and no buzzing sound at all. Now I'm trying to return is to Amazon and getting another one instead. But In the forum I can see that many users of 2080 or 2080 Ti are experiencing the same problem, making me worry about the possibility of getting another coil whine card from the dealer. So I open this thread to see:

1. How many of you are experiencing the same problem? How many of you don't have the buzzing sound or whining at all? I just want to see the ratio to make the decision of returning the card for a new one or just bear the sound and stay with this one.
2. Is it possible to get a buzzing free card if I go through RMA from EVGA? Or they're not able to make sure that if the RMA card would have the same problem or not.

And sorry for my English if there's something not clear.

I do have a RTX 2080 XC and coil whine is heavy on mine. I'm trying to RMA it but, yeah, like you, I'm still wondering what I'll received.. If it'll be worst or better.

2080 XC Gaming, no coil whine. Just crazy high temps under load even with 100% fan profile when my case is closed. Previously I had and 1070, and before this a 970. Temperatures where never a problem with my case and those cards. This cards on BF V with NO overclock goes to 80+ and will start to throttle itself. If I open my case it goes down to around 70~72. Maybe I don't have the best air flow, but really weird that this was not an issue with my previous card. It's kind "dumb" that I have to put more 2 fans pulling air out of my case because of a new graphics card. I guess i'll just open the case... hope next generation runs cooler.

Well I also do have very high temp without overclock (85°). I've undervolt the card to  and it seems to be better but that's not a "normal use" of course and I shouldn't have to do this. Also, if temps dropped by 10° with you case open, it's kinda obvious that your case is the only issue.

But well, that's not the subject of this topic :D

You have a definite heat loop going on - card is sucking in hotter & hotter air inside your case

Cooling is usually better when you pressurize the case.  If you add more exhaust you may need to add more intake fans - its the mix - are case fans @ 100% speed.

The 2080Ti GPU is both larger & consumes more power than your 1070 - so it is not odd that it can generate more heat

Back on subject:

I have 2 EVGA 2080 Ti - no coil noise that I can hear - they run 24/7

40C - 45C above ambient temperature in an open case seems to be normal - Yes they are OC & loaded ~ 90% Folding

Thanks for your reply!
The purpose of this thread is to see the possibility and ratio to get a 2080 Ti without coil whine. I've seen the linked thread in your reply. The replies in that one are mostly from people who suffer coil whine. This thread is supposed to have all 2080/2080 Ti users, whether they have coil whine problem or not, to make a reply to answer the question "how lucky you need to be for a no coil whine 2080 Ti".

I think the signal-to-noise ratio will be high (lots of irrelevant replies or duplicate replies) and the sample size will be too small, but I wish you luck.

If you aggregate the data and present it at some point, that would be useful.

RTX 2080 XC

I had very loud coil whine even with vsync on in many games, games such as RE2make, Far Cry 5 and even FIFA19 but not the low demand games like terraria. Witcher 3 was the loudest. Changed the PSU and the whine dropped for all the games. But still very noticable for Witcher 3 so I'll just have to live with that.
I still have the crash and reboots.

I need to find out for certain that the crashes are from the card before I consider RMA, hate sending stuff around and waiting for mail.

In looking at my profile, I've had 15 EVGA cards starting with the 9600 GT back in 2009. 2018 was the first time I ever encountered coil whine as both of my RTX 2080 Ti XC ULTRA's had (not subtle) coil whine. Coincidentally, I sold one and the other is currently in RMA for unrelated reasons.

New build pending....

I installed my 2080 Ti BE on 1-3-2019, and the only time I have heard coil whine** is when I was stressing the card with Geeks3D TessMark 0.3.0 and the framerate exceeded 1,000 fps. Other than that, I have not heard anything, and I have a very quiet system.

** At least I assumed it was coil whine, as I have never experienced it with any of my previous EVGA cards: Two GTX 260s, a GTX 570 HD SC, a GTX 770 SC, and a GTX 980 Ti FTW.

2080 XC Ultra here, no noise what so ever.  No coil whine.  I've had it oc'd to +1000 on the memory, and +150 on the core and it doesn't make a peep.  The fans are, bearable at 100% speed also.  I had a 2080ti FE that out of the box, a fan was whirring and whizzing pretty bad.  Sent it back after owning it for only 3 hours.  Waiting for the full refund to purchase and EVGA card this time.

Re: Open a new thread to see how many 2080/2080 Ti have coil whine problem 2019/03/03 11:22:48 (permalink)
Hello,

Coil whine is simply the vibration of the coils in a capacitor as the power passes through it, similar to running a damp finger around the rim of a wine glass. Every capacitor in every electronic device has some coil whine, but the vast majority of capacitors whine well outside the hearing range of humans. On occasion though, a capacitor vibrates at a frequency in the range our ear can detect. It's not harmful to the device at all, so there's no worry about the product failing just because of coil whine.

The combination of hardware components in your system can also affect the amount of coil whine you experience. Different motherboards and power supplies tend to have biggest affect, but adding or removing other components can also change the degree of the coil whine heard. High FPS games also seem to induce coil whine. I personally like this forum post about coil whine: http://www.overclock.net/...il-whine#post_14619220

Sometimes you can put the card under load for an extended period of time to help fix this issue. If you run a stress test of Unigine Heaven or Valley benchmarks on high for a period of 8-12 hours, this could help fix the issue. Please note that you should keep your fans at 100% for this, to ensure the card stays cool.

Please keep in mind, coil whine is present in everything. I have personally heard coil whine in keyboards and phones, as well as GPUs and PSUs. There is not a problem with coil whine in the graphics  cards, it is simply just a byproduct of how power flows through the capacitors.

If you hear constant, severe, coil whine, feel free to get in contact with us so we can look into options for you for the card. You can contact us via email or by phone at 1.888.881.3842.

I'm not an electrical engineer so I claim no expertise, but I thought it was called 'coil whine' because it was a coil, or inductor, that was generating the noise? As far as I know, capacitors have no coils.

Is it really usually capacitors that are generating audible noise on a GPU?
