Hey Gotspeed, did you ever hear from your friend? I can’t respond to PM’s yet. Do you have Reddit or some other way we can communicate? If so, please pm me. I’m good with email too if you are. Thanks.

Glad you found someone else

Do any solutions exist for just generic water cooling for ANY backplate? It seems like its the only real difference between HC block and Optimus...

I used this with the HC block:
https://www.mp5works.com/
With adding additional thermal pads to the stock backplate (as discussed in another forum post), seemed to work well enough to keep things cool.  Only issue I had was that I could not use the stocking mounting solution to secure the card, the clips don't have a place to anchor on the backplate.  So I just laid it on top of the block.  I'm sure something could be rigged up.

You are the guy with Optimus block no? Any big difference in temp?
Yes something could definitely be rigged up.

Yup, I upgraded to the Optimus block.  If I recall the MP5works backplate block did a decent job at keeping the backside memory similar to the front of the block.  The Optimus block does give you a lower delta T than the HC + MP5works , but if you have a HC block I found the MP5works block a better solution than just slapping on a heatsink to the back of the block and pointing a fan at it.

Re: OPTIMUS SIGNATURE GPU BLOCK - KINGPIN 3090 2022/01/15 20:01:50 (permalink)
I don't have any hard numbers, and my main recollection is for GPU temp.  But currently, with the Optimus block running mid-to-high 20s at idle, and was only getting to high 30s for average during the run, may get into the 40s if the room is warmer.  So a delta of like 15-20 C.  My last decent bench with the HC block the GPU got up to 60c average.  But ambient was warmer back in May, maybe idle was maybe mid 30s, so like 20-25 C delta?  So something like a 5-10 C delta difference.
The HC block and MP5works block is definitely a better solution than the stock AIO.  It doesn't beat the Optimus block, but still an improvement over stock.

You placed MP5 directly over backplate?
Kingpin backplate gets really hot (where ram and GPU is obviously). I am surprised HC just left that untouched.

Well there was a thermal pad between the two, but yes, I placed the MP5 block directly on the backplate, over the area where the backside memory is.

Not too surprising the HC doesn't have an active backplate, to my knowledge active backplates really haven't been a thing before.  EVGA isn't necessarily known for innovation in open loop components, so the lack of active backplate isn't surprising.  And with the 3090 Ti (if it gets released...) supposedly only using single sided memory, I doubt they feel the need to chase it.  Who knows, active backplates may really only be a 3090 thing and die with 40 series.

I'm thinking of getting the block. If I would order now how long do I have to wait?

So I guess I'm stuck with this solution because the pump noise from the hybrid is driving me nuts. And because I'm from Europe there's pretty much zero chance that I would get my hands on the HC block.. EVGA hasn't even listed the block yet. So yeah.. Any ideas would be appreciated from you guys.

I'm thinking the wait would be about 8 weeks or so.  They are still completing the pre-orders.  If you are keeping your 3090 Kingpin, I'd go on the list as soon as possible.  If you are on the fence about keeping your 3090 Kingpin then I'd wait and see how they progress.

Yeah its definitely a must for 30 series. A functional but almost unnecessary option for previous series.

I got emails saying few months out. Still on the fence.

My stock Kingpin is also noisy with its motor. It was absurd when I first installed it. After placing small magnet on it it became very quiet.  I didn't keep it on, and after a while it quieted down on its own. Currently the compressor-like noise is till there, but its maybe half its original volume. Bigger concern is that its not performing optimally because its misaligned and impedes flow.

Maybe just wait... it might go away on its own.

One guy removed the card, leaving only the radiator/motor hooked up and started tapping and shaking the card while the motor ran, until the noise went away.

No idea because they aren't through shipping out the first day of preorders yet.  It could be a few months.

Why not buy a hydrocopper in the meantime?

I've got a HC block I never took out of the box if you're interested.

I keep debating on installing it to finish my new build while I wait for the Optimus block and then decide against.

It is probably machine oil or oil from the rubber gaskets.
It would be easy enough to take apart and clean off.

I think the black finish accentuates the wet look.
That looks amazing by the way!
I ordered silver.

The low numbers of blocks shipping out still has me concerned. So does leaving oil or water on the block for gasket installation.  Why didn't they bother cleaning it up?  It makes them look sloppy.

No problem. Best of luck. I'm going to take some photos of the teardown and install over the next few days. I'll be sure to post here.

The guy who got his first and had the wrong instructions backplate packaging looked like it had been soaked. Its only on the backplate which has a massive thermal pad so its likely the temperature swing in shipping causing the thermal pad to leach out.

What thermal paste are you going to use?

I used Liquid metal on my FTW3 block and was really impressed.

Yeah the thing is I'm interested in the RAW Copper Coldplate Finish. So I think I'll wait for more informations on this.. I think copper looks better with the Kingpin.

It's not acceptable for 2k+ card in my opinion. And it blows my mind that no Youtuber has discovered and talked about this issue yet!! And you know what? Mine is even a RMA card (first card was pretty silent though but faulty unfortunately). Not only the noise is the problem but the fact that is unreliable. Many here in the forums stated they had silent cards in the beginning and months later they become noisy. A few even stated that their pumps died. That's why for long term use I'm going with the Optimus block. The HC Block is not available to me and it doesn't cool the back VRAM modules anyway. So a clear decision for me.
I don't know what I should do in the meantime but I think I try to RMA again and hope for a more silent card but it just sucks man.. Magnet trick is not it. Could damage other components like my NU Audio Card which is right under the graphics card. So no I don't want to risk that. And cable mod does reduce the noise only a little atleast that was my experience with the 2080ti FTW3 Hybrid..

As many cards are in the wild It would seem like this is a real small number, sorry for your luck but there is no evidence this is widespread

I had a 3080 Hybrid and 3080 Ti hybrid and both were dead silent , MY KPE started up like an old fridge and I hit the power button and unmounted the Rad and held it straight up with with some slight shaking and it cleared right up in about 5 seconds , Ran silent since June last year.  The cooler internals are most like Asetek, Built for EVGA's design and I assure you its not a lack of care

It's not acceptable for 2k+ card in my opinion. And it blows my mind that no Youtuber has discovered and talked about this issue yet!!

Two threads full of people with pump issues across all 30 series cards, including Kingpin.
