The fighting knives are very well balanced, but the kitchen knife is blade heavy.  Definitely a fantastic chopper.

I really think that kitchen knife is the sexiest picture I have ever taken.... and its just a prototype.

Oh that shiny knife with the ebony wood looks super sexy   Well done sir, job well done.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

The san mai nearing completion:

All that remains is the cutting edge and to be blued.   Only the cutting edge will show up blued, so the entire knife theme is black and white.

Will work some more on the kitchen knife tomorrow.

That san mai has taken MONTHS to complete.

SAN MAI is COMPLETED.  PICTURE TIME...

The high carbon steel in the middle of the knife was gun-blued, so it helps protect against rust by accelerating a patina on it.  You can see the stripe along the entire perimeter of the knife.  Months of work.

More updates on the kitchen knife:

Down to 400 grit.

ONLY the edge is hardened.  Skates a file with ease.  That is what that line you see is.  Its a hamon

More sanding, and blue'ing up next.

The last pictures of the San Mai before I send it off.  I will miss it.  MONTHS of work...

Sheath made:

Strap is removable.  Had to machine those disk looking things to fit a 4-40 thread.  So the belt loop is removable if that isn't your type of thing.

So we started with this forged lump, and turned it into this knife:

There will be plenty of updates :)

Like these:

The inside of the forge.

After all day at the forge, the san mai bar is drawn out and cooling or "normalizing".  If I cooled it too quickly, it would be harder and more difficult to work on.

Now I need to grind, and shape the billet.

Hey Nateman, is the material the same or what are the thicker bars [mid-stack] in the layer?? The working pictures are really nice and sharp. It all looks like a lot of work ,but fun and satisfaction at the same time.

Re: Made some more metal things. Looking for opinions. 2017/01/03 18:11:03 (permalink)
that stack is normally how a damascus blade is made.  Generally you use alternating steels to get something of a wood grain, or zebra patterns.  This is the same principle, but those thick bars in the center are a very high carbon steel which will make up the cutting edge.  The outer layers are a high nickel steel.  So when the knife is dipped in acid, the center of the knife will blacken, and the outer layers will remain shiney.
