I cannot wait to see what it looks like.  It is the same steel configuration as that apocalypse chopper.  The spring steel wrapped tool steel.

Thanks!  Yea I kind of like the straighter edge as well.  Also its easier to do.

While waiting for a slab of 5160 to make a working prototype of the cleaver, I went to finish up some other fighting knives.  Cut some of my own harvested stabilized burls.

What do you guys like better.  I have a blackened blade, (forward) and un-blackened (rear)

Do you guys like the brown on the blackened blade, or on the plain steel.
OR, the burgundy on the blackened or plain steel blade?

Don't ask me what kind of wood it is.  The brown one came from a swamp.  Its a root burl.  I have some samples of it I plan to mail out to a place that identifies it if enough people like it.  personally I think its the most beautiful wood I have ever seen.  My buddy says pin cherry, but I want to be sure first.

no input on the regular brown wood vs the reddish finish?  I think both look sexy on a black knife.

Update on the cleaver...

Paper cutout on the sheet of 5160, with the O1/5160/Ni above it.

You can see the reflection of the machine itself in the finish.

Ready to cut:

Will have updates shortly after this.

Finishing up some handles, but they were too hard to drill through.  Had to soften them up with heat, but heat would ruin the blades.

Solution:

a close up:

In other news, I put the spring steel Damascus billet on the machine to cut the shape.  Since it was properly annealed, its so much easier to work with.  Even being tool/alloy steels.

Thanks!  btw, need to know if you prefer black, or steel for the center.  Black will be O1 Tool Steel, Regular will be L6.

Opted for some beefier pins.

These knives should be finished soon.

Why do I love CNC?

Cause its a near flawless copy.  They all fit together so nicely :)
I plan to make these cleavers as inexpensive and quickly as possible (the carbon steel kind, not the forged kind), without compromising quality.  Nothing hand made is ever cheap, but due to their simple shape and the addition of a belt grinder, (and some jig's made after) it should make for easy & repeatable manufacture.

Going to be building a bench grinder next.  Putting the cleavers on hold until the bench grinder is finished.  Picking up 90% of the steel for it tomorrow.

burgundy on the blackened  (the brown burl looks too green in the photo - Nice pattern though)

Now if the burl wood had the burgundy & blackened

did a VERY quick and dirty etch on the forged cleaver:

Purchased most of the steel (should be all) for the belt grinder.  Hopefully the mobile folks switch over to wifi before I post that build.

Haha I've been around since you made water blocks, never bought any but certainly admired the work.  I used to work with CNC Machines using Microvellum back in the day for wood working, now carpentry is just a hobby of mine for home made cabinets/furniture.   I will certainly reach out at some point!

I look forward to it!

Larger pins fitted.

Now to trim them and then comes the detail work.

Got started on cutting the steel for the belt grinder.  Should be doing some welding tonight.

Belt grinder  is nearing completion...   But I also started on a prototype tomahawk.

The billet was questionable as you can see it started to split from some VERY aggressive squashing in the press:

I got plenty of handle material left over to try again as you can see the entire thing is over 36" long:

Chopped off the handle, ground and a quick etch gives me another billet to goof around with

Close up:

I will stack it 5 times giving me 100 layers, but I am going to add 2 sections of L6 in there (perhaps some other stuff) to add to the mass.  The L6 will be like a chrome steel and will resist the etching.

Update:  The billet above was layered with some L6 steel and made into a billet for a fighting knife.  I started over with the tomahawk billet:

Starting with 20 layers of 15N20/1084

Drawn out to around 18" and roughly 2" wide and 1 " thick:

1x2x3 block for scale

Now its stacked up and ready to be made into an 80 layer billet:

This lump of coal:

Turns into a tomahawk:

A grossly inefficient process.  There will be so much wasted material, but whatever works.  My forge press isn't designed to actually shape tomahawks, so it will be more of a stock removal process.  This is as wide as my forge can handle.

240 layers.

Since the pictures make it look small, here is a ruler for scale:

Not exactly small, but not exactly large either.

After heat treating and temper:

A quick sand blast shows the different layers:

I keep forgetting to post here.  Haven't been as busy with the forge as I would like.  I need help trying to figure out a nice handle for this knife.  To go with the black and white theme:
simple etching:

Gun blue'd after etching:
