Re:Get It Colder......2 2010/11/03 10:00:54 (permalink)
I would like to keep pushing the Q720M.  I honestly have no idea what is wrong with it though.  Now I can't hardly exceed 150Mhz Bclock.  I was having this problem before too, but it seemed like a certain combination of memory fixed the problem.  Now the problem is back again full force.

ARggh!  I want to get some boints!

I did see the core voltage spike for a split second at 1.8-1.9v at one point while drawing the pencil on the PWM controller.  I wonder if I nuked it.    I am getting memory related BSoDS while overclocking past ~150MHz BClock.  I wonder if I screwed up the IMC.  Anyone have a Q720M (A.K.A 720QM) lying around which they don't need anymore after upgrading?

On another note, I was wondering if anyone has some advice regarding getting XP working on my laptop.  I have tried slipstreaming SP3, SATA, and Chipset drivers into the XP install disk, but still I get a BSoD while starting the install (after it is done loading drivers and first starting the setup process) relating to my hard drive.  I don't know if it is the SATA CD-ROM drive which is tripping the BSoD or the SATA Hard drive.  Maybe it is a problem with AHCI versus IDE mode (which I have no control over with this laptop).  Any thoughts?  Success stories?

hummmmm, if you seen 1.8 to 1.9 v on a mobile cpu...that would be the last of that cpu you seen..lol
now if that is 1.0825 or something like that...understandable.

i just uploaded all the xp drivers for my g73...they may work for you as well.

as to installing xp. make it easy n yourself.
install it in ide mode and not achi mode. you can convert it after the install.

Ty_ger07, that's probably a question for John, resident laptop guru.  But I seem to remember an issue with my D900F that you couldn't run XP.  Check the notebook review forums too.

No, it definately was 1.8-1.9v.  I was booting up after applying some more lead while measuring the core voltage with the multimeter.  The multimeter was bouncing all over the place with load changes during boot.  The core voltage was reading around 1.2v during POST, dropped to around 1.1v for a bit, and then started bouncing around 1.4 to 1.6v during boot and flashed up to 1.8 and 1.9v for short instants.  Obviously the core voltage becomes very unstable with load changes on this CPU.  I already knew that to some extent noticing default vdroop.  But apparently the voltage swings become real extreme with more voltage.

yeah, not going to go to much into that voltage thing..since i didnt use it with my 720 and it ranks near the top... but you got me beat there at trying...only thing i might have tried was boosting 133 to boot 166. then start over clocking from there.

What do you mean by boosting to boot?  There is no way to force a boot OC with SetFSB, is there?

Yea tank works great.  They filled it through the liquid outlet and it took 25 min.  This time they said they're taking the top off to fill it.

Hey thought I'd share my 260 gtx from hell. I do have a full waterblock for the 260 but didn't feel like prepping the block plus I didn't have enough eraser. Just run this last-night with chilled water and got 3D06 @ 820 core before the mod on water my max was 760 core. Card temps during load are about 10c.
This set up will allow me to swap cards out pretty fast, loving the old DD GPU block .

Did you ever pick up the Tek-9, if so how long was the wait? I'd have to say with the 480 on Ln2 you'd be looking at some serious boints.

well i did some more tweaking and had some interesting results.
i read in shamaino's old i7 overclocking thread that you can "improve" your vantage scores by playing with the IOH voltages

sadly this did not work for me, results:

specs: 3way SLI 800core/900mem GTX 470
4.3ghz 980x

stock IOH (1.1v)
P40029
GPU 41057   CPU 37230

IOH 1.2v
P39919
GPU 40905   CPU 37227

IOH 1.3 QPI PLL 1.15 (stock 1.1)
P39798
GPU 40754   CPU 37183

may need some more tweaking, also my clock may not be high enough to have to worry about those voltages

anyway i just thought i would share

You probably don't have to worry about that too much.  IOH vcore rule of thumb is 1.1 for one gpu, and add 0.05 for each additional graphics card.  I run mine on auto.  In fact I run all voltages on auto except vcore, dimmv, and cpu vtt.  Honestly I found no difference across the chip samples I have for i7920/980.  Then again it just may be my beautiful 759 classy that's been holding up for a year and 8 months now, lol!

Well, LN2 was going good....passing vantage cpu tests @5.4ghz @1.7v.....and getting cpu scores (non-physx) of almost 49000.

BUT....now my 480's are not working.  They bomb any 3d bench with stock clocks and voltage.  Tested individually, and they do the same.  Nothing comes together when you want it to.  So not to waste LN2 I just did a quick cpu-z.

Who me, hellshealer?  Strange to me too. I think maybe pcie socket a little damp, lol!  I switched to pcie socket #2, which I never use, and now I got it to pass vantage oc'd @1900/2250.

Not home yet though.  Now waiting for the chiller to pull down temps and we'll see how it goes.
