Ok, i figured this thread would be a good place to ask a question i have. I am looking into a new PSU for my benching rig. Currently i am benching cpu only, as i do not have the $ for high end video cards currently. I am benching on air right now, but i have cpu and nb DICE pots i plan to use once i feel like i have mastered the mobo and maxed the 2 procs i have out on air. The PSU needs to be around $100 - $130. ($130 before MIR's). Here are the one's i have been looking at: TT 750w modular [60 amps on 12v] - $125 free ship: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153104 Antec 750w partial modular [62 amps on 12v] - $130 free ship: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371025 Silverstone 750w [60 amps on 12v] - $130: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256049 Corsair 750w [60 amps on 12v] - $110 free ship: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 A little out of my price range, but very nice: Corsair 850w [70 amps on 12v] - $140 free ship: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009 Ignoring the 850w Corsair i posted, what would you choose(TT, Antec, Silverstone, or Corsair)? considering brand, power, and price?

Well, it is about extreme benching, and this is a decision for my benching rig with DICE. I consider any sub-zero benching extreme. If you want me to, i will just make a new thread in the overclocking forum, and will delete my post here.

General hardware is probably the place. Of the ones in your range, get the Corsair. I'd make the effort to spring for the TX 850, though. You'll use every bit of it once you start benching multiple cards.

Especially sub-zero benching. To answer your question, I would go with the TT, or the Corsair as they're the brands that I've heard most about.

Ok cool. I just wanted a few opinions. Two more quick questions. I am a big fan of Corsair units. But the 750tx and 850tx are only 80plus cert. while the other psu's (TT, SS, Antec) are 80plus bronze. How much of a difference does the efficiency actually make? Especially when drawing near peak power (which i know won't happen without a highend gpu or 2 and a heavy oc on the proc). I know Nate is running a 1200w and 860w pc p&c. If i got a 750w now, would getting a second one and running dual psu's of this wattage be sufficient for very high end benching? Or would one main large psu (1000-1200w) and a smalled secondary (550-650w) be better? I am just trying to plan out my power usage for when i start benching all very high end stuff. Remember, i will be going under DICE very soon, and ln2 eventually...

your going to need to spend quite a bit more than your willing... you can start with a corsair hx1000 1k. it seems to max out at about 1130 watts or so before the unit just shuts off. that will run your whole setup including you over clocking your cards and running on dice. http://www.nextag.com/cor...80516-D88E87AC654989C4

So John, you are saying a bigger psu and smaller would be better than two average sized ones? So a 1000w+500w would be a better option than 2 750w ones? Or are you saying i should have a big and average one? So 1000w+750w?

with what your running now.. that 1k will do you fine...now if you we're running dual gtx295's and an i7...that 1k will not be enough, but you can add another power supply or a vga power supply addon. nate: you see he has a budget going on...lol...single rail is like the most expensive one...isn't it? oh yeah, im waiting to see the end results.. side note: just got my 5970 ordered at microcenter. should be here saturday. and to the rest of the public..NO! THEY DONT HAVE ANY MORE AND THEY AREN'T GETTING ANY MORE EITHER...more like next year, from what the word seems to be...although, they may get like 1 or 2...lol hell, i dont even know if mine will be there. they said it's on the truck.

Well actually i have a separate benching rig. You are probably looking at my main rig though. But i will probably try out my main rig's cpu and gpu's in the benching rig eventually. My cheap a$$ benching rig currently: DFI UT P35 T2R - i plan to get alot of use out of this mobo. When i get some better chips, i plan on shooting for 600+ fsb. 2x1gb 1066 Dominators Pentium D 915 and P4 660 - i have yet to try the 660. I am currently working on maxing the 915. I have hit 4.6ghz fairly stable on air right now with the 915. ATI x600xt Antec 550w psu The x600xt, 550w psu, and p4 660 came from an old rig. The PD 915 i had laying around. The mobo i bought here, and the ram is from my main rig, which i replaced with 2x2gb 1066 Doms. (I had 4x1gb Doms originally) I know this will never come near 750w. But if i use my main rig's cpu and gpu's i definitely will need more power than 550w. I also plan on picking up some more chips for benching (e5200, e7400, e3200). Another reason i want a new psu for my benching rig is that the current one is 4-5 years old now. I honestly don't know how much longer it will last. ____ I actually have thought up a little plan, since i don't have the $ for a quality 1000w psu. What i am figuring is that i get a 750 or 850w psu now (probably the 750tx or 850tx.) Then, when i have the $ for really powerful hardware later, i could purchase a 1000w psu or something similar. So smaller now, and bigger later. Does this seem like a reasonable plan?
