they were saying $6 a gallon this summer nationwide, it seems to have hit faster.  I hope it doesn't last all summer but it seems like we should expect it to just climb higher at this point.

I have two EVs, a 2012 nissan leaf and a 2021 Volvo XC40 recharge.  these charge in my garage every night, (usually from my solar system, but sometimes plugged into the house power).  I don't miss the gas station, the oil changes, the maintenance.  Realize the EV option doesn't work for everyone, but I have been driving them for 10 years and they are great if they fit into your routine.

So long as the Ukraine war continues gas prices as well as food prices will continue to go up.

If it keeps up I wouldn't be shocked if soon EV and Hybrid was just what options people have from car manufactures.

The oil companies would love that and there is no way they wouldn't lobby to have gas cars still made...
/s

I'm just saying if you are a car company like Ford you probably are going to increase production of hybrids and EV and cut back on gas powered car production next year. We could see a 15% increase on the EV and Hybrid and a 15% decrease on non hybrid or EV models. That could mean in five years you will very likely be buying a used hybrid or EV. It's also true that the SUV went away mostly around in the 2000 when the gas prices increased and even had the Bronco get discontinued because of lack of cars sold. That is likely to be 2023 and 2024 regardless of lobbying from the oil industry. The automotive industry are going to produce cars that will sell at the dealerships. I am going to bet that the 15mpg Ford Bronco Raptor isn't going to sell very well and could doom the brands comeback to the same fate we saw 20 years earlier.

This is the funniest part for me. The last time gas hit $5 everyone went nuts and the half ton 4X4 trucks and SUVs didn't sell.... Well.... Because most people don't really need those to get back and forth to the suburbs and the office job..... We have very short memories.

That's only partially correct. That's only a small reason actually. Continuing the XL gas pipeline, and letting oil companies drill for more oil would bring down the gas prices. (Russia doesn't run this country).

The XL Pipeline would have been Canadian gas being brought down to be refined near the Gulf of Mexico for exporting. Also drilling more wouldn't really lower prices since in 2016 congress voted to allow USA oil to be exported for the first time in 40 years onto the global market so unless the global need is met it doesn't lower prices to drill more.

I am not going to get political but oil is a globally traded commodity not bound to one country so no one leader really has power to really change much without the oil companies working with them. That would be true for what ever person is president, king, queen or dictator in what ever country you live in.

OPEC has a lot to say about the price of fuel and global markets
OPEC did say it will increase production.
The government makes more off a gallon of gas than the oil company.
The gas station owners makes pennies a gallon. Their profits come from selling milk bread soda and the stuff in the store

Life is too short to carry a cheap pocket knife

Not too far from me is a gas station that is fully automated. No one there at all. You have to use a debit card or credit card to pump the gas.

More oil on the market means the price goes down.

OPEC is having a great time right now knowing their prices cannot be undercut and that the US refuses to produce more oil and that Russian oil is essentially off the market for most of the west.   (US and Russia are the #1 and #3 producers globally).

If you want to understand this in GPU terms, OPEC is basically the graphics card scalper of 2021.   But if Nvidia could have pushed a couple buttons and magically made more GPU's appear, scalping wouldn't have ever been a problem.

Here's a good question for the 0 emission cult to ponder.
What will they do when the next natural disaster occurs? In a grid down situation from tornado, hurricane, flood etc
What is the rescue plan?
e-chainsaws - charge the batteries how?
How will the rescue brigade get there? On foot?
I can see it now. Thousands of volunteers carrying solar panels and rolling spools of wire. Not.

Nuclear power, its carbon neutral. But big bad radiation so we can’t have that. 🙄

Nuclear fusion then. Better allocating massive resources to that than pushing EV when we don't have the infrastructure nor the battery technology to support it yet. It's all about virtue signalling right now, and zero about common sense.

The very recent drop in price is just a red herring.  We are depleting our strategic reserves @ 1mn barrels per day and predictions are that we will be at a 40 year low by Sept or Oct.  What happens when those reserves dry up and global tensions continue to escalate?  We could see prices skyrocket way past what they even are now.

Ahh yes, the old 'put the price up 100% and then knock it down 5% so the punters think it's a good deal' trick.

There will always be oil to pump out of the ground. Common misconception is oil is finite. Oil is constantly replenishing itself, it doesn't just come from dead dinosaurs. Plus there is oil we have not figured out how to get to, but we know it's there.

Cannot blame anyone except the greed of big oil. Just look at their record profits during 2022.

NOPE, it is a fixed percentage, that just happens to increase as crude prices rise

"Big Oil" makes a fixed margin, as a percentage of crude price.  Say margin on crude = 8.14%

So at $50/barrel (lowest profitable price) = $4.07 Profit/barrel - however - @  $100/barrel - their Margin doubles,  to $8.14/barrel @ 8.14% example

(source excerpt)  ---> Current and historical gross margin, operating margin and net profit margin for Exxon (XOM) over the last 10 years. Profit margin can be defined as the percentage of revenue that a company retains as income after the deduction of expenses. Exxon net profit margin as of March 31, 2022 is 8.14%.

Interesting reading: ExxonMobil Investor-Relations

IMO - Allowing Stock Market Speculation - is the real issue, driving these insane oil prices.

Why can people bid up (speculate) on oil futures - if they do not have the ability to ship, take possession, store or refine the crude?

You know the oil prices on the Stock Market have yet to be pumped from the ground, & will not "hit the market" for 3 months or longer?

That all (or almost all) the US crude is shipped overseas - US refineries are setup for "sour crude" - (like Saudi Arabia sells) & the US oil = "sweet crude" like Europe & Asia use.

Have you ever wondered why there has been no real shortages in the US?  As long as you are willing to pay, you can find gas, heating oil, propane .....

Back in the late 70s? & early 80s ..... Gas was rationed by Even days / Odd days .. had to match the last digit on your tag .... if you could find a gas station with fuel for sale.  Yet in the Chesapeake Bay, clogged Full of oil tankers - sitting very low in the water, because they were full of oil.  Tankers could not unload because the oil storage tank in port were full!

Now days it is easy to find fuel, kind of expensive though.  Yes, compared to pandemic years it is much higher; but, so are wages.

True there is no incentives for Countries or Oil Companies to flood the markets with crude, as they are enjoying the profits after a few years of minimal profits during the COVID world wide slowdown

I am kind of wondering if it will last because they said in June it would be worse in July since that is when the majority of summer trips happen. As we get into end of August people start back to school shopping instead of taking major vacations so hopefully, we are seeing the worst of the demand. In the fall we stop using the better burning gas that costs more that should also help lower gas prices.

$5.39 for 87 here in Chicago at the moment.
$5.89 for 89
$6.39 for 93

It was at $7 for 93 a few weeks back.
Just drove through Ohio and Indiana - 93 was $4

Really feels like they are price gouging in Chicago - its disgusting.
