I believe removing the heatsink or tampering with the cooling apparatus will void your warranty...

No it will not as long as you don't physically damage anything and return it to stock when you RMA: http://www.evga.com/suppo..arranty/graphics-cards/

My card has experienced this symptom once so far, happened a couple of nights ago when playing Elite: Dangerous supersampled (effectively 4K).

After reading all these reports, I'm not sure how to proceed. I haven't been able to reproduce the symptom since, but I have a bad feeling that it's only a matter of time.

Hey guy's, I re- seated my card, re-installed my drivers and I'm still getting strange white lines across my screen whenever I do a cold boot. When the system warms up, they go away. I decided to try debug mode today, and when I did, The top one third of my monitor displayed little color full squares and rectangles. I rebooted, and all was good again. No crash today, but things aren't quite right. What are your opinions? RMA? I paid over $700 with tax for this card.

Sounds like you got yourself a defective card. Have you tried a different display cable/output?

I switched display ports and the white lines seem to have gone away. I also played Battlefront on ultra for a couple of hours and the card seems to be behaving normally, Good framerates and running between 68-70 Celsius. The only other problem I have, is that I noticed the card doesn't idle, even when I'm on the desktop its clock speed is 1721. I ran Malwarebytes and my system is clean.... Any ideas? Anyhow, I'm going to play the Battlefield 1 beta this week and if I have no crashes or other strange behavior I will keep the card, if I do, its going back. Maybe I will see if EVGA will let me pay the difference and get a classified edition card, they don't seem to be having all these problems. Oh and by the way, thank you for your help.

Glad to hear your problems are solved.

Here are the top causes of why a GPU would run at full clocks at idle...

#1 You're running multiple monitors. Fix: Enable mutil display power saver using nvidia inspector.
#2 Your machine has a virus. Fix: Scan computer using malwarebytes.
#3 One or more programs running in the background are using your GPU. Fix: Perform a clean boot of windows.
#4 Power management mode inside the nvidia control panel is set to prefer maximum performance. Fix: Set power management mode to adaptive then reboot your computer.
#5 Running a resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144Hz. Fix: Change refresh rate to 120Hz.
#6 K-Boost is enabled inside Precision X. Fix: Disable K-Boost.
#7 Shadowplay is enabled inside geforce experience. Fix: Disable shadowplay inside geforce experience OR completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)

Ran into this issue. Two weeks of using my card, it has been crashing all over the place including the 100% fan, black screen issue. Some games take longer to crash but some are shorter like the Witcher 3. I'm RMAing the card because I paid for an over clocked card and it isn't even stable at stock. Really disappointed as this is the first EVGA card I've ever owned. I've always gotten stock Nvidia rebranded PCBs and never had an issue in 15 years with several models.

While I'm glad I found this thread, it makes me sad that a replacement card I've paid advanced RMA fee for may still not work properly. Will report back in a week or so.

Now I'm just curious about this. How many people will have to complain before EVGA does more than asks us to call in? This is beginning to look like a major problem but I guess EVGA won't see it until there's maybe 15 to 20 pages of posts.

While all of this sucks, I'm just glad it's EVGA we're dealing with here, not ASUS or similar. I've never been let down by them in the past, this certainly doesn't dent my confidence in the brand.
I've emailed EU support and will probably hear back tomorrow. I still haven't seen the issue again, but I'm interested to hear what their team recommends.

I have had this issue since launch and the only solution for my 1080 FTW has been to uninstall Precision X OC. I can run the same clocks with MSI Afterburner and if it gets unstable it will just do a driver crash instead of the black screen and fan revv.

Wow so you're saying since you uninstalled Precision x OC you never had a black screen with your fans revving up? So just a driver crash?? And how long has it been since you uninstalled Precision x OC?

So I actually re-installed it last night before bed and just tried gaming today. About an hour of use and it black screened again with X OC installed. Uninstalling again to game for the rest of the night.

Does MSI afterburner cause the same problem? You should try that over PXOC and see if there is no crashing.

So, update for everyone. I RMA'ed the card, it seems like the card can't handle the factory overclock for some reason. *shrugs* It worked for fine for hours in Debug mode, but when I turned debug mode off to the overclock, it crashed within 10 mins.

Yeah one thing I think EVGA did not realize was how much of an impact the new GPU boost 3.0 would have on a video card. So basically GPU boost 3.0 is already pushing the card to the Limit and now you have this additional aggressive overclock and it's more than the car can handle. Did you RMA and are you getting the same card in return? I chose not to. I don't want to take the chance again for it not to work. And I got lucky with Newegg that they gave me store credit. I'll give you an update as well with the new card I get.

I hate when this companies do not reply to the issue speaking directly to the community, it's frustrating and they are NOT offering us a solution, since all they do is send us a bunch of other faulty cards.

Yep, mine does this too in Guild Wars 2. Tried it in different computers and the same thing happens. Sending mine back to seller and hopefully get my money back. Don´t know what to buy now.

for me at least its not software unless its the display driver, because i did a clean install of windows, and only installed nvidia drivers and started Guild Wars 2, didn't take long until the black screen.

Having the same issue as you guys. Can play DooM, Life is Strange, BF1 Beta with zero issues as far as I have played. But Rocket League uses only about 60% gpu usage and it crashes without fail after about 10-20 minutes. Monitor loses signal and gpu fans go to full blast, only way to recover the PC is to hard reset by holding the power button for 4 seconds.

Like others, i have tried different power supplies and all combinations of drivers, programs Uninstalled, etc.

So i got an advance RMA done, new card came fresh in it's box. And Dun Dun Dun, Dun dun....Dun, this brand new card has the same exact issue. They offered to do another RMA but they would open it up and abuse it first to see if it crashes for them. Not exactly the most enticing offer...im looking at possibly returning it and going with an Asus Strix 1080 instead since the 1080 FTW is clearly a card with some sort of inherent design flaw, and there is no other 1080 that they can swap us to without going to a different brand altogether.

Wow that sucks. So it's possibly when the game doesn't use much of the GPU and frame rate is high it may be caused? Very strange.

Do any of your games crash at all? Are you running stock clocks or overclock ?

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2016/08/30 16:39:50 (permalink)
100% stock, no overclock at all. My first 1080 had some artifacting in a games but it strangely went away. No issues with regular game crashes, and event viewer is spotless. I watched every imaginable metric using gpu-z sensor logging. We know it is the card itself since atleast one other person had their second card have the same issue, but the third finally fixed it for him.

I wanted the 1080 FTW so badly, it was the only version even in my mind going into this build. I have used only EVGA cards since switching to Nvidia 10 years ago, and while I know any card can have issues, any company can have a manufacturing problem, this issue is nothing like what I've seen before, and without any official word from EVGA on what specifically is happening here, any 1080 FTW being in my system would just feel like a ticking time bomb. I would happily trade up to the classified card since its a whole different PCB but that is not an option they allow, so my only option they gave me is to take my business to their competitors from now on.

Yes, im very frustrated but not trying to be Overly dramatic even though it may read that way, im just extremely dissapointed here. This rig as a birthday build, all i have had is 3 weeks of constant Headaches(literally) and stress from this, I'm too sick to work for 4 years so my only joy is gaming, and that's not possible on this card.

Got my gtx 1080 ftw 10 days ago. I had no problems so far. No overclocking or anything. I was playing on an xb271hu the predator 1440p gsync 144hz screen. I was playing wow legion for 3 hours until the screen went black and fans on max speed. I shutes the pc down from the button. I restarted it and tried witcher 3. I played for 1 hour and the problem didnt happen again. I dont know what it is but maybe its something with the drivers?? I bought this card from overclockers uk. Btw i am fully happy with the performance but that crash worried me. I hope evga will find a fix i dont want to RMA

Received my RMA today and am actively testing it as I write this. I set my fan curve to start at 60% at 35C and stepping up from there. The fan curve is the only thing I changed in Precision Xoc.

Thus far card temps have not gone over 48C, which is 12C cooler than the previous card with the exact same fan curve. I have also noticed that the gpu clock has not exceeded the factory OC as my previous card did jumping to 2025mhz.

Will continue to run benchmarks and update as I get any more info. Thus far it has lasted longer than the other card ever did outside of debug mode.
