what card would you recommend? a different EVGA 1080 or do you think the SC and Classified will have the same issue? i hear that the MSI Gaming X is pretty good, my friend has a Zotac card he's ran into no issues with it and says it runs great. havn't heard much about Asus' Cards with the 10 Series

If I was you I wouldn't take another chance with an EVGA card. Take a look at this one it's the one I got and it looks fantastic.

I can confirm that this theory is very inaccurate as we do test 100% of the 1080 FTW cards prior to shipping and that is why there is a DT model as not all cards can pass at the higher settings.  This is not due to a bad card, but rather how every GPU overclocks differently.

I do not recommend downgrading your product, but instead finding the true cause of the issue.  We are here to help and please contact us so that we can work with you.

Please call or email us if you do need help as we are here to assist.

EVGA should immediately issue a recall and stop selling these FTW cards!! Here's my theory on how it went at the manufacturing plant: So out of a hundred cards manufactured they took a sample of 10 cards to test for overclocking stability. So 7 out of these 10 cards failed so rather than deciding to go back to the drawing board and find out why they failed they instead decided to create a whole new category of graphics card called the FTW DT! So now they can sell the FTW DT cards which are basically those 7 that failed their tests and we're down tuned as a result... hence the name FTW DT. For cost reasons they decided not to test the other 90 cards but instead just assumed that they would be ok! And now we the users are stuck with our games crashing and these stupid black screens and fighting with the retailers to get our money back! What a cluster f@#$$!! For a moment I actually thought I would get  a FTW DT card, but then I thought what the hell am I thinking getting a $700 card that actually has been DT (Down Tuned)!! Hell no!  So no more EVGA for me. I decided to get the MSI gaming 8G. I would rather get a non overclocked card and overclock it myself and ensure stability.

Thank you so much for responding! What would be great for all of us users experiencing this problem is for you to replicate this issue in the lab and help us with the diagnosis. I'm sure in your Advanced Labs you have much better equipment to diagnose the issue then we all do. Thank you again.

Thanks so much. I appreciate that. I haven't given up on EVGA. Just this round. And I'll let you know how the replacement card works. I'm praying this is not an Nvidia problem.

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2016/08/26 23:37:12 (permalink)
Well, if it makes anyone feel better, I have 2 1080 FTW cards in SLI. The top card likes to run at 2100mhz and the bottom 2000mhz on their own. They get to 65c with maybe 200 - 400 rpm on the fans. I have not experienced any issues with these cards at all but I am currently on a 1080p monitor while I research 1440p 144mhz and 4K monitors. I am not sure which direction I want to go although the 34" Ultrawide monitors from Asus and Acer have peaked my interest but my bank account is still recovering from my recent build.

I primarily play World of Warships which probably is not stressing 1 card out let alone 2 at 1080p but the settings are maxed out on the game as well as the following

Arma 3
Black Desert Online
Doom
The Division
GTA 5

Once I get a new monitor and start making the cards work, we'll see of those issues arise..... I hope not!

Hey people, I also have this problem.
I sent my first card back about a week and a half ago because of coil whine. Tried loads of stuff to get rid of the coil but no luck (new psu, burn in test etc).

I just got my rma 1080 FTW replacement yesterday and unfortunately that also had the same level of coil whine ..so I though I would learn to live with it rather than yet another rma.
So I booted up the heaven benchmark for the first time with the new 1080 ftw. After 15min of running the bench I got a black screen and a hoover like fan noise from the card.

The card reached about 70°c on ultra, and about 55-60°c on low settings with a lower resolution ..all setting resulted in the same black screen fan problem after about 15-20min running heaven.
Tried just about everything to get it working, I lastly used debug mode via the Nvidia control panel and still no luck.

I did not have this problem with my first card and I haven't changed anything in my system since. I now wish I didn't rma my first card, but you don't really expect anything like this to happen I guess.

I am having the same problem with my gtx 1080 FTW playing the witcher 3 on 1440p ULTRA Settings it reaches 80° (my case is not the coldest one) and it got black screen with fans spinning to max. 80° are not normal but it should be due to the case not getting ventilated enough, but anyway this shouldn't cause the error I am having.

I will ask just for a refund I am not going to the RMA process.

Hasn't happened in a week.

I'd also like to add when I was on the 372.54 the crash only happened when I was playing a game on the highest settings. If I lowered settings it never crashed.

Ill try rolling back the driver to 368.81 like you did tasbx and try the bench again. if it lasts longer than 15min ill keep it going and report back.

I was with 368.81 and it still crashed after few hours of gaming. Now I am on .25 the temperatures are high but it didn't crash in 2 hours of the witcher 3.

I received my GT 1080 FTW today from Scan.co.uk and am experiencing the same crashes to black screen and fans spinning up to 100%. Very disappointed. I'll try and roll back to an earlier set of drivers.

Confirmed roll back to 368.81 didn't work for me.  I was on latest drivers (372.54), didn't work either.  I have GTX 1080 FTW DT at STOCK/DEFAULT settings.  I do NOT want to try debug mode because that is NOT why I paid premium to buy a EVGA card with aftermarket cooler and factory OC.

Far Cry Primal, Crysis 3 blank screen + full fans comes up especially quickly.

I also followed instructions for driver cleaner, uninstall, unseating, switching PCI E slots.  As others have said here, clearly a hardware issue (not driver issue either because other brands do not have this issue).

This is getting a bit ridiculous.  I bought this card in Hong Kong and I think RMA won't even help because they'll just send me another defective card and retailers in HK do not even do exchanges past 7 days purchase....... I am stuck with EVGA.

I'm a first time EVGA customer and NEVER AGAIN

Same for me. 1st time buying EVGA GPU but I think I won't ever buy from 'em again. Especially with their low profile on the issue, did not read anything from them.

Tried with 368.25 and nothing, still black screen and max rpm.

Monday I will ask for an advanced RMA or refund.

The only game I'm having problems with now is COD Advanced warfare.  I can play my other games for hours without any problems.  Thing is all I did was set the power target and temp target to max and cranked up the fan profile .  Both cards sit at 2025mhz under 64c.  But advanced warfare still hard locks, way less so when debug mode is on but still does.  So I just play that game on my other rig.  At least it runs perfectly with it..

Once I can get the battlefield 1 beta we will see how that game works.

I've had the same issue .... gotta be something with the drivers / OS / software since it only happens in some games randomly

I hope anywayz!

As I mentioned above, my previous rma card had no issue with the black screen fan problem ..it took about a week and a half for the new card to come. The only thing I can remember that has changed on my system since then is the Windows 10 Anniversary Update maybe, and ofc the recent Nvidia driver.  Maybe the most recent batch of 1080's are just faulty, and if that the case than getting an rma will more than likely get me another faulty one.

I got my first black screen+100% fan speed today when playing rocket league... ROCKET LEAGUE! Not the most demanding game. Albeit I had the card overclocked +75mzh on the core and +175mhz on the vram. Full power and everything. I have dialed down the overclock a bit now and tested with heaven and it has not crashed again. It would be nice if you could overclock the card without being stressed out about this crash. We'll see what the future holds I guess...

Would be nice, like somebody else mentioned, if EVGA could replicate the crash in their labs and see if there's a solution to the problem.

If I was you I would return the card to the place you purchased it and see if you can get a store credit. Get a 1080 that does not have "FTW" in the name. I hope that EVGA now sees this as a big enough problem to issue a BIOS update/work in progress report etc.etc. something to tell the scores of users that this problem is being addressed and that a fix is coming soon.

I exchanged my 1080 FTW at the store I purchased it at for the same card. So far zero crashes at stock speeds *Knocking on Wood* in Fallout 4 or Heroes of the Storm, the two games I had the most trouble with. Sajin was right from day one. If this is happening to you, you should return or RTM the card.

Thanks Sajin, wish I listened to you, would have saved a lot of time.

Nice! Be sure to test your card at different resolutions and also for a good length of time and then please let us know how everything turns out after that. You just might have won the Silicon Lottery with the new card. 😀

Well, I received my new gtx 1080 ftw yesterday from Amazon and it looks like I'm in the same boat as you guys unfortunetly.I did a uninstall and shut down using DDU, removed my EVGA GTX 980ti and seated my new 1080 ftw, plugged in the power cables, hooked up the monitor and fired my rig up. I then installed the new driver from NVIDIA 372.54, I installed the MSI Afterburner Beta 4 and set up my fan curve and osd and began to play Overwatch. The card performed wonderfully, no problems at all. This morning I fired up my rig and noticed white, horizontal lines running across the screen every time I opened a new window. So I rebooted and they went away, everything seemed back to normal. I left for a bit, when I came back and woke the computer from sleep mode, the white lines were back. I rebooted, and once again they were gone and everything was normal. I played Overwatch for about an hour... No problems, then I decided to play some Battlefront and after about 15 minutes I noticed that my framerates had dropped from an average of 130 to about 85. I was looking at the osd and the gpu temp was 68 Celsius, and the core clock was at 1936 and just then my display went black and the fans ramped up. I just don't understand what happened, nothing was hot or being pushed hard and it just lost the signal and my monitor went into power saving mode. After I got shut down and restarted, I checked windows event viewer and low and behold, there were no errors concerning the video card or drivers, what the heck? The one thing I forgot to do when I installed my new driver was to change the power setting in the NVIDIA control panel, It was on optimal, so I changed it to maximum performance and haven't had a problem the rest of the day. Keeping my fingers crossed, if it happens again Ill be calling EVGATech Chris I guess.
