you can, and keep the warranty, re-TIM the cards...

That's what I'd do.

I'm also having the same issue sadly, my 1080ftw isnt even stable if it's underclocked slightly. I've tried everything in the troubleshooting guide, and it seemed to be stable for about 3 hours of witcher 3 in debug mode. That being said I'm still going to RMA it most likely. The card should at least be stable at its intended clock speeds.

Have you tried my solution? Use Precision X OC and just set the fans to run at max and run your tests. Obviously you'll go back and tweak the fan settings later for less noise, but just to see if something else is overheating.

Is there an application that lets you view temps on other card components? If i'm right about the issue, there must be other sensors on the card that aren't displayed.

I'm also going to try and take the back plate off when I get home tonight and see if that helps at all.

Normally there is no temp sensor for the ram or the power bank. Has anyone taken apart the card notice any missing heat pads for the ram or power bank? Turning the fax to max wont do anything if the part that is overheating isnt touching the cooler IF that is even the problem.

Hi there,

i have got mine 1080 FTW yesterday. I have massive Coilwhine but the biggest Problem is -- Blackscreen and set Fanspeed to 100% -- i have no idea why. First i thought the coreclock or voltage i set is to high but i got the same issue with standard settings.

I think I figured it out but I need an experts thoughts.

So this happened to me too but only when I played Far Cry 4 without turning on a custom fan curve. This happens when the card gets too hot.  When the thermal limit of 94c is reached the black screen comes up and the fans spin to 100% to keep the card from dying.

How do I know this?  I did a test using the Unigine Valley benchmark.  In Precision X OC I set everything on default without any fan curve.  I just left everything on Auto.  So first I thought..wow great zero fan speed..ok when will it kick in?  Someone told me it would kick in at 60-65c.  So I ran the Valley benchmark and the card got over 90C and was approaching the 94c mark.  The fan never kicked in!!  So I went into the EVGA precision OC tool again.  Reset everything to the defaults and ran the Unigine Valley test again...this time the fans kicked in at around 45-50c and during the test the card did approach the 94c mark at all - it never got above 75c.

So I think this card needs a BIOS update or its needs something that will ensure that the fans kick in!  Test this yourself and enable the precision tool to display your fan speeds in the game.  Please let us know what you find out.

I also think its a fail safe feature when getting too hot but i dont think its a problem with core temps but rather either the ram or VRM's and causing voltage fluctuation but that is speculation. Could very well be a problem with the firmware/driver or we just have a bad batch of cards, a lot of possible reasons. Taking the backplate off and look at the thermals with a temperature gun MAY give us some hints.

See my post above.  The problem lies with the fact that the default profile sometimes does not spin up the fans.  God! I just hope we did not do any long term damage to our cards.

Thats not the problem, the fans dont spin when not pass a set temp for noise. When under load they spin rather it is kinda slow its to save on noise. Even if the card got to hot on the core would lower its own clock and voltage to reduce heat this is known as thermal throttling and is common. Also if there are components not touching the heat sink fans at 100% wont do anything for them. Also my issue happen both times with fans closed to 70%  with temps under 75 degrees C.

Wow if yours does this black screen when the temps are under 75c something is very wrong for sure. Like I mentioned I got freaked out when the fan did not kick in and the card started rising above 90c in that Valley benchmark.

I'm having the same problem as you (coil whine, black screen monitors, fans to 100% after black screen) with my 1080 SC ACX, my problem becomes chronic when I try to play any game with nvidia DSR On.
You had success with the RMA?

-I have a 1080 SC and experiencing same issues minus the coil whine...

When do you experience it?  Did you monitor your temperature when it happened?  Did the temp get above 94c?

I am also having the exact same issues mentioned here. Been watching this thread closely hoping for a resolution before I RMA. My card has gone to the black screen and fans revving up at 60 to 70 degrees C. My card has never gotten hotter than 70 degrees. Yesterday I had left my computer off all day, booted it up and started playing the witcher while it was cold and it did it within about 45 seconds, card was showing about 45 degrees at the time and had my fans set to max to make sure it stayed cool.

I am really beginning to think the problem lies with how the card handles tesselation. I have had it happen, then I play for 2 hours before it happens again, then it goes 10 minutes before the next time. Seemingly at random. However I have reached an area in the Witcher with a lot of smoke and particles in the air and I get to almost the exact same spot before my card goes haywire every single time. I still haven't been able to pass the area. Completely cold computer it does it.

Has anyone had any luck with the RMA yet? Or does anyone who has this card not have this issue? If it is truly a tesselation issue I am hopeful a driver/firmware update could resolve it before needing to ship this off.

Cold boot will sometimes black screen. The issue varies. Sometimes it's 30 seconds into a game ... Sometimes it's 3 hours. Nothing to do with my system specs. Tried the card in 2 different PCs and have same results that vary. I'm beginning to think its an EVGA PROBLEM. I just bought an MSI 1080 to test out and it's flawless. May keep it and sell my EVGA cards to a random fan boy in here. 😇

Just got my 1080 FTW 3 days ago and its doing the same thing. I set the fan to 100% in precision X, card never goes above 65 C. During game play (usually takes 20 min but sometimes an hour or more) all monitors will go black and the fans on the card will spool up big time, only way to fix it is to power cycle the machine.
Would RMA but from the looks of this thread EVGA has got some kind of problem with these cards and I'm worried the replacement will do the same thing. Not really sure what to do... wish EVGA would let us know what is going on here.

For me so far the only 100% fix over the past 2 nights of gaming has been to enable Debug Mode in the control panel. No more black screen + fan ramp up with factory clock settings. For the people wondering about temps, I've used a custom fan profile since the second I installed it and even when benchmarking it hasn't been above 65c, the lockup was only ever below 60 anyway.

First day after installing card, after about half an hour playing WoW, black screen and fans kick on full. Downloaded Precision X and turned on the OSD to watch card info while playing WoW. First thing I noticed was that the GPU frequency was boosting to 2025 MHz. Around 64c, almost every time, it would crash the card. Went back and looked at the specs and for the 1080 FTW and it shows 1721 Mhz base and boost to 1860 MHz. Adjusted through precision x -200MHz to match what the specs say, not a single crash since. Boosts to about 1850-1870 MHz now and runs like a beast. I think they overclocked the cards higher than the stated specs show. Hope this helps, 8 hours straight of playing WoW and not a single glitch. Cards hovers around 58c.

I'm having this issue on a Founders Edition at stock clocks. Card will OC plenty just fine (2000+), but I have it at stock. Within a few minutes of booting, with no gaming or even video playing, it will go black and full speed fans almost every time, needing a reboot.

Played it for several weeks in long game sessions and never a crash. Now suddenly it can't even handle idling at the Windows desktop.

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2016/08/20 03:27:25 (permalink)
Does anyone have any idea what causes this ?

I just installed a GTX 1080 FTW and can't play Rise of the Tomb Raider for more than 3 minutes without having the blackscreen and fans vamping up to 100% crash. Sound still carries on in the backround but can't alt tab or alt ctrl delete or anything, have to hard reboot to stop it... It seems as if my clock speeds are boosting to over 1900 while in the game too which is weird because I haven't over clocked it at all?

I've read a lot of mixed opinions about what this may or may not be, faulty card, faulty power supply, a plug not seated properly, driver issues, report issues... is anyone getting any closer to a possible answer?

You have to monitor your temperature. Best guess in my opinion is that the card is reaching 94c and then it's shutting down.  So do a test.  First set your fan profile to aggressive, make sure that the OSD of Precision X is running in game, see how hot it get's and make sure the fan is spinning.  Also then if that will not work then put your card in debug mode and run the test again.

Temperature climbs to about 72 degrees and sits there before the crash occurs, memory usage was about 2800mb and clock was sitting at about 1959 - The same as what it sits at when playing the Witcher 3 - Except the Witcher I can play for long periods of time without experiencing the crash - So far the only game I've had this problem with is Rise of the Tomb Raider and it occurs within the first few minutes...

Is it normal for the clock speeds to drop to 259 when in some menus / non 3D sequences like FMV cut scenes etc ?

I'm running into the same issue for the GTX 1080 FTW. I was advised by support to check my power supplies 12v rail. Since I can recreate the issue nearly on demand (Dragon Age Inquisition, Storm Coast) I decided to set the file to log. No changes in the 12v rail. I did notice that it appears the GPU Clock Speed dropped and then spiked hard before the crash. I have had some luck in the XOC software of backing the clock speed down by 100-200 MHz. Which I find to be a problem as that tells me the card might not be stable under it's advertised clock speeds. Currently I'm trying to decide between RMA or straight return to vendor for refund.

I have a 980 Ti, but I was getting black screens (no 100% fan speed, I am under water) with the new 372.54 drivers.

Then I saw that Nvidia has the 372.54 drivers for both Windows 10 AND Windows 10 Anniversary update. I was running the standard Win10 drivers on my Win10 Anniversary update PC, so I used DDU to uninstall the drivers and installed the Anniversary version.

Black screens went buh-bye!

Edit: For posterity, the two drivers are different file sizes.

Just a FYI to everyone monitoring this thread... the OP's issue was resolved by rma'ing the card.

And the Anniversary driver is a larger file - so it isn't the exact same.

Definitely nothing to do with temps. Like I said, idling at the desktop.

Not what I saw yesterday when I finally fixed my issue. I deleted the old file, I'll redownload and check.

EDIT: looks like they changed it on their end - the original 372.54 non-anniversary update that I downloaded was a smaller file size than what is now on their server (which is the same size as the anniversary update now).

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2016/08/20 15:33:06 (permalink)
So my card was crashing like this with a GPU temp of 50c. I noticed the back plate was getting super hot. I just derped a large spare fan to blow air over the card. I haven't crashed since and my GPU is getting 70c+ and doing smart things like ramping up fans (default profile) and dropping the clock as it gets hotter.

Maybe the issue is that something else on the card is overheating, a component on the back of the PCB and the back plate is trapping in the hot air, and my case airflow just sucked.
