I have 1080 ftw and I have this problem too. In 3dmark's skydiver benchmark, my card gives the black out problem everytime at exact point that when woman fires a flare in the cave. But, it doesn't happen unless it is in debug mode. So, I think the issue is cards boost profile related. It might be hardware issue that some cards are not able to go beyond base clock or something. Since it is ftw and advertised as with its boost clock, they have to exchange failed cards with new ones instead of bios update which would change boost clock lower than advertised number. Just a guess. :) I bought my card directly from Amazon on August 28th. Instead of Rma process, I am going to try Amazon return program.

You might be better off with the RMA. If you do the return and buy another or they exchange it, you might end up with an old card.

I tried ATS + K200 again, on the old cards. It works fine now, so I guess it was an (un)lucky combo of the cards and 'something' in ATS (it was a beta version when I encountered it, now it's a release version). So I can't use that anymore as a quick test. Old cards still randomly crash in WoW, so definitively defective. Will swap them out later today, after some more testing with the old ones to see if I can't find something that gives me a quick result .

JonIrenicus Well, guess what. Black screen and fans spin up to 100%. No overclock, no nothing. I received my 1080 ftw yesterday, and this thing happened some moments ago, when I was playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. I bought the card directly from eu.evga.com and I made the purchase on the 2nd of September and it was shipped on the 8th of September. Obviously I will RMA it, but I hate if I have to pay the shipping cost. I already paid too much for a frustrating issue. I hope someone from the evga team wil explain better how the process goes exactly, because it asks a lot of information, just for one support ticket. I don' t know if this is relative, but my serial number is 16125xxxxxxxxxxx. I' ll try this debug fix, but I didn't pay premium for that. First evga graphics card and I' m starting to regret it. I hope at least, that the support is as good as I hear.
And it just happened again. Just idling in desktop. I didn't even have the time to enable the debug mode.

*Quick update to hopefully quell some fears with the replacement RMA cards being sent out, 7 days + now with no black screens. Fingers crossed that the RMA's being sent out from about a week ago seem to be performing as expected, I will post again if I experience any further issues. FYI games and benches used: Arkham Knight Bioshock remaster Outlast Metro Last Light redux Alien Isolation Overwatch 3dmark - Firestrike and Time spy When using the benchmarks I overclocked the card by 120mhz, it throttles down to a stable 2088mhz at around 66c. Otherwise the games I'm playing are at the cards factory overclocked settings.

I tried this. Indeed, after the flare black screen etc... I'm not in debug mode. And I'm running standard clocks. The moment it happened 1st card was @ 1506Mhz. EDIT: Ugh, after a reboot it runs fine. I'm getting fed up with this guessing and testing, I want an official statement with technical details and an explanation of what they did to resolve it

So I got the problem again after a week of not seeing it, also while playing Witcher 3. Problem is, this time the card simply dropped dead. After resetting, there's only a single white bar on my main monitor. Plugged in my old 770 and it works normally. No choice but to RMA this time.

How long is everyone's 1080 FTW Hybrid RMA taking for their replacement card to ship out? My RMA ticket was entered 09/08/2016, almost 10 days ago, and still has not shipped. I guess they are waiting for more stock, but would be nice to know since it says to allow 2-3 to ship from when the ticket was entered. The NVidia debug mode seems to be working in the meantime so no rush, just wondered what was happening. I've put a ticket in requesting the same btw, just wondering if this wait time is normal for everyone. (note: this is for the 1080 HYBRID, not the non-hybrid FTW cards)

So far my first RMA is working perfectly, and I have been able to play Elite Dangerous on the VIVE for 4 hours without a single problem. Card sticks mostly around 2020Mhz which is pretty much what I was getting before. So far so good, it looks to be fixed.

I received my RMA yesterday from EVGA. So far, it has not had a problem at all. I have put in a good 6 hours of different games that would cause the issue within the first 1 hour of play. Sometimes, within 5 minutes. I am glad they did an advance RMA to save me the trouble of having to wait even longer! I will update this if I for some reason run into it again, but I believe this card does not have it or else I would have gotten it by now.

EVGA responded to the ticket already - they are just waiting on more stock, as I suspected. Thanks.

This black screen crashing nonsense happened to me for the first time today, I've had this card running perfect for over a month now and I read this whole thread and realized that I'm not alone. The funny thing is it happened after about 6 hours of ESO and maybe 10min of Overwatch it honestly scared the hell out of me because neither game is that graphically intense and I've played the Witcher 3 for like 8-9 hours straight with no issue.
I decided to run Heaven for about an hour and my temps hit 74c max and have had no issues. My room was abnormally hot today so I'm hoping it just got too hot as when I decided to take a look at it, it was extremely hot. I'll update if it happens again and I'll be sure to monitor temps and keep the a/c on, if it becomes a consistent issue I'll probably just RMA.

i have had the exact same problem. after rebooting it looks like that. what i did to get through that is go to the UEFI at startup then exit and let it reboot. then you should be able to boot windows. just make sure you go to debug mode. And have it RMA'd

Flash forward to today and I was checking out Guild Wars 2 again with a friend. Boom, black screens and omega fans. Restart PC. Restart Guild Wars. Not even 5 mins in, boom black screen and uber fans. I get pissed and check on EVGA's forums and find this thread. Now I'm pissed. How many people are having this problem? Pretty unacceptable if you ask me. Am I supposed to RMA or should I just get a new card.

I have been playing WoW and F1 2016 for a week with my RMA card from EVGA TW, so far there is no more black screen occurred (touch wood). Noticed that at 65 Celsius degree with fan speed curve at 80%, the clock is at 1974 consistently.

Having the same problem... decided to RMA to EVGA TW (I'm in Singapore). They said that they have already arranged a courier service for me, and requests me to accept the confirmation e-mail from the courier. Thing is, there is no such confirmation e-mail to accept. How long does a courier contact you, or am I just being ignored by them? This is my first ever RMA (and EVGA purchase for that matter), so there may be some things I'm unsure about.

I went in and looked in event logs and nothing was listed. maybe a driver fail? It has only happened once. SN: 16129362XXXX1775

Mine has also crashed several times in Guild Wars 2, and earlier in this thread I noticed a number of people mentioned crashes while playing GW2 (among other games). You will need to contact EVGA and they may run a few tests and likely you'll have to RMA the card, but EVGA have been giving free EAR returns (they ship replacement new card to you, then you ship old card back using supplied pre-paid shipping label). In the meantime, if you go into NVidia control panel and click "help" on the menu on the top of the window, then click "debug mode", that seems to stop the crashes (and also limits the boost to 1860MHz). You need to do this every time you restart your PC btw. EVGA will ship you a new card btw, not a refurbished one. This problem is apparently some hardware issue with a small number of cards shipped from EVGA prior to 8/30/2016. To contact EVGA, just go to EVGA RMA and start filling it out, and one of the following screens should give you a toll-free number to call and they will take it from there.

I went in and looked in event logs and nothing was listed. maybe a driver fail? Seems like the same problem I've been having. Half of the crashes, the computer's sound began looping a small section very rapidly. The other half of the crashes, the screen went black and fans to 100% but I could still talk to people in Discord where they could hear me and I could hear them. Even in that situation, there was nothing I could do to bring the screen back and a shutdown/reset was necessary. I have my new card now, but with everything that's been happening and a failure to let us know how the problem was addressed or even a definite way for us to check our cards, I'd rather be safe than sorry and just return the RMA and then return the original so I could go with a different brand. Customer service is great and all, but it doesn't mean much if the product itself is faulty. Limiting the hardware through a software solution doesn't fix the problem. I have no assurance that is not what's happening, especially considering the number of people who are getting new cards that are only capable of a lower clock speed than their original. An overclock that pushes too high should leave you with artifacts on the screen or a driver crash, not an unrecoverable GPU crash.

Called EVGA earlier and got everything set up!!! No questions asked. Just had to send a PDF of my Amazon invoice and I'm good to go. New card should be sent here in the next few days. As much as it sucks to get bad hardware, it's rather nice when the company that makes it takes the responsibility and replaces it promptly. Now if I can just talk em into upgrading it to the Hydro.

Well, I just put the old card in and it looks like the BIOS versions are the same with the BIOS dumps being the exact same on the byte level too. A CS rep said they were told it was a hardware issue and not firmware. I suspect the post earlier about hardware differences was so the tech could see if one of the power connectors had something wrong. In any case, the Panasonic SP-caps on mine varied slightly. The old had 668QJ while the new has 66WQK. Not sure if that is pertinent, but it was a topic of discussion so I felt I should put it here anyway. Plus, the serial numbers only varied by the last 4 digits. At this rate, I do not have much confidence in this new card. With the old one, it would crash on any of the last 3 driver versions from Nvidia. Someone else mentioned that theirs crashed suddenly after a month of no problems. EVGA, we are paying a large chunk of money for this card. If this is the quality of the component we receive, I want to know why and what has been done to fix it. I don't want reassurances, I want facts. I talked to someone through the technical support and they said the Product Team assured the customer service reps that it has been fixed but were given no details. EVGA, your customer service reps need details because your customers need details. To the customer service reps: I understand that you can only work with the information you are given. Thanks for being awesome. I'm happy to see that all the good things said about the customer service are true, as far as I can tell. For anyone wanting to know about EVGA serial numbers, here's what I was told by a rep: "The first two digits correlate to the year, so 16 being for 2016, the third digit designates the product type, 0 being power supply, 1 being graphics card, 2 being motherboard, etc. Then the 4th and 5th number designates the factory is was manufactured in, as far as I know. The 6th digit signifies the warranty length, this particular one being a 3, for 3 years, while 7,8,9 and 10 are the part number. The 11th digit is for the region it's sold in and the last 5 digits are simply the serial number sequence." Knowing this, chances are good that if the last 5 digits of your serial number on your new card make a number larger than the last 5 on your old card, you have a card made later in production with the fixes. I hope this helps.

My RMA is from EVGA TW, so the last five digit are way smaller than my original card. Surely the region code is different in both old and RMA cards.

That is not comforting at all... It means that while my replacements come from another factory, both the old and the new cards seem to be from pretty early on in the production process
