The plot thickens. If this is happening to a replaced GPU then I think this goes deeper than a faulty batch of cards, but that's just me. I see a lot of people saying their RMA'd card is working fine for now after only a day of having it so I can't deem that reliable.

I'm decent with computers I'm no wiz but I honestly think...and I'm being hopeful..that this is software related. If it's not the drivers then it's EVGA all together and we have a RRoD situation on our hands.

Call their service number for sure.  Their hardware is faulty.  I called them last night and the process is already in motion. You just need a PDF of your sales invoice and your card needs to be registered and you should be good. They will send a replacement to you and you send your faulty card back in the same box. Fairly hassle free.  *fairly, heh.  We can only keep our fingers crossed that the new cards won't have the same problem.

You describe the advanced rma method which makes you pay again. I' m not going to pay for their mistake. I sent them an e-mail, requesting an advanced rma, without the extra payment. In case they refuse ( the most propable outcome), I' ll demand a full refund and go with another brand.

I should have cancelled the order when I first learned about the problem, but then I read that they have solved it, so I was convinced and did not cancel. Big big mistake.

How does advanced RMA make you pay again? Mentioned multiple times on this thread, so far nobody has had to pay anything extra - EVGA has covered all shipping costs (at least for US, not sure about international). EVGA will take your credit card details in case you decide not to return the old card, but will not charge it until a reasonable amount of time has passed for you to return the old card.

For anyone wanting to know about EVGA serial numbers, here's what I was told by a rep:
"The first two digits correlate to the year, so 16 being for 2016, the third digit designates the product type, 0 being power supply, 1 being graphics card, 2 being motherboard, etc. Then the 4th and 5th number designates the factory is was manufactured in, as far as I know. The 6th digit signifies the warranty length, this particular one being a 3, for 3 years, while 7,8,9 and 10 are the part number. The 11th digit is for the region it's sold in and the last 5 digits are simply the serial number sequence."

That's interesting. My 3rd digit is '8' ..I guess that's a special one for Hybrid cards? If the last 5 digits are the serial number sequence, I apparently have one of the first handful of hybrids released in the USA, but I know there were a bunch of people who got one before I did as they ran out of stock and restocked several times before I got lucky.

From the evga rma page I read:
"The Advanced RMA does require you to place a collateral payment covering the full cost of your replacement through PayPal. The cost of the collateral is determined by EVGA EU. Once the collateral payment is received, EVGA EU will ship your replacement product to you first. Once you receive the product, you can then send the original product back to EVGA EU".

You' re speaking about individual cases. I hope you are right though.

They just require you to enter your credit card details and they'll basically just do what gas stations do. They'll place a small charge on the card (that doesn't go through) to verify the card is legitimate, then if you don't return the old GPU within 14 days, they charge your credit card for the cost of the new GPU.

Like I said, they are sending me a card FIRST and then I'll send mine back in the same box. Advanced RMA, I guess.  I'm NOT paying anymore in the form of shipping or anything. They are replacing the hardware at their cost, rightly so. Call their 1-888 number and they'll sort it out.

And what if you don' t have a credit card. I only have a virtual prepaid master card which is  linked with my paypal account and obviously I don' t leave such large amounts of money there. I don' t leave it empty either, but again I' d love a clarification on that matter.

@northendninja : that' s good to hear. But I cannot make a phone call. We' ll have to sort it out via e-mail.

Dude, I don't know. Call the number if you want clarification.  For me, the guy said my card would be charged one cent, probably for verification purposes.

Yeah, they should take care of you. It seems there are a lot of us in the same boat here and they're taking it seriously. I don't think you'll have any problems as long as you have your sales invoice and your card is registered. Atleast from what I have dealt with since last night. Their communications through E-mail have been fairly fast aswell.   Good luck with it, it's been annoying, but hopefully they get it all sorted out for all of us. It's a good chunk of money for a lot of us and if they want repeat customers they need to handle it right.

Exactly my thoughts. And registering my card was my top priority when I received it. But, imagine my frustration, when I faced the problem after only 3 hours of gaming.

Anyway, I have already mailed them and waiting for an answer. I' ll update when I have my response.

I'm glad to hear evga is offering cost free advanced RMAs to those affected, even if it does sometimes require a couple tries to resolve it. EVGA is taking care of the customer.  I almost regret not just RMAing mine through EVGA. Had I known the process was nearly painless and at no cost instead of switching to another vendor. I love Asus products but god I hate their RMA process should something go wrong.

Indeed. You don't even get the opportunity for an Advanced RMA from EVGA Taiwan which is very disappointing.

This entire thread is giving me tons of stress. Just got a 1080 FTW from jet and opted out of returns...

I can't believe I discovered this AFTER reading a ton of posts about how EVGA is "the best"... Should have kept my strix 1080 o8G...

Were you experiencing issues with your Strix? Honestly after owning both, they perform exactly the same in real world games. I can't say one is better than the other outside this issue. At least with your FTW should an issue arise in the next three years, EVGA will replace it hassle free.

Absolutely zero issues with Strix. Overclocked to 2050 and stayed cool at 65C. I actually love the RGB backplate, pin connector lights, and 2 pwm fan headers on the strix.

Only reason I put it up for sale is because jet had the FTW on sale for $610.97 - no tax no shipping (after discounts)!

I got to get back like $100 or so and get a brand new card to play the silicon lottery again lol.

Also, here are my benchmarks:

userbenchmark      -----      /UserRun/1666615

And 7814 Graphics score in time spy.

That's a excellent price, I can see going through the hoops for a $100. Let us know how your new card is when you get it.

Something weird has just happened to me and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen too?

Like others here, my 1080 FTW was black screening with the fans at full speed within 10-15 minutes of playing games like Witcher 3 and Skyrim, except with debug mode on. I sent it off to EVGA Taiwan and I'm waiting for them to receive it. In the mean time, I put my old card (Gigabyte GTX780 OC) back in since advance RMA isn't available here. I have never had problems with this card. I fired up Skyrim and 20 minutes later I've just had the black screen and fans speeding up error happen... so I'm quite confused. Is this a driver issue, or something else? It seems silly, but I wonder if the pci-e slot was somehow damaged by the 1080 FTW - it would explain why a card I've had for around 3 years has suddenly given me the exact same error that I've had with the faulty card. But I've never heard of a card damaging a slot before...

Okay so just an update on this, I moved my 780 into another slot and the problem stopped happening right away. Debug mode didn't work and I'm using the same driver version. I'm pretty confident in saying that the pci-e slot I was using is damaged now. Maybe it's just coincidental timing, but I find it odd that I start getting the exact same black screen + 100% fans error that I had with my 1080 FTW on a card that I have never had problems with before. It makes me a bit worried to test out my RMA card when it arrives, because I don't exactly have many slots left to spare.

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2016/09/18 21:32:43 (permalink)
Background: I was helping my little bro with his GTX 1080 problem - black screen, fan spinning and then long white bar during a boot. It crashed again while playing games, such as CSGO and Overwatch. There was nothing wrong with it for 30 days before the issue struck. He and I have almost identical setups except for CPU cooler, SSD, RAM and PSU. He is using triple monitors including one 144hz monitor in the center, while I'm using ultrawide monitor.

His setup:
MB - ASUS Z170I Pro Gaming
CPU - Intel Core i7 6700K
CPU Cooler - Corsair Hydro Series H60 Liquid Cooler
GPU - EVGA GTX 1080 FTW
PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 3200
SSD - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
HDD - *I forgot the name but I don't think this has to do with this problem*

Again, mine is almost identical as his. I only have:
CPU - Coolmaster Hyper 212 EVO
PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GS
RAM - G.SKILL TridentZ 16GB DDR4 3200
SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 500GB
HDD - N/A

His first GTX 1080 FTW faced similar problem as you guys have. He filled his RMA and received the replacement three days later, which was last Friday. Same problem appeared in this replacement. He ended up asking me to do hardware swap with him. After I installed the replacement in my setup and play games for an hour, I had not yet receive any problem. He asked me to use my RAM but I had to disable the XMP in the bios before he was going to use mine. The problem disappeared with XMP disabled in his setup. This is not final solution yet - the issue came back half a day later. He was distressed and about to request for second RMA. I took time figuring out and realized that SSD in his setup has not configured yet. So I install Samsung Magician and applied "Maximum Performance", it didn't crash during few hours of playing Overwatch. No downclocking/undervotage involved. It remains stable at stock overclock speed of 1950MHz at 65°C. That was happened yesterday (Saturday) and I periodically monitor his setup. I haven't witness and hear any issues from him ever since.

I think the memory has to do with this FTW issue but I don't know the exact cause. There's one person from few pages ago mentions similar issue as I wrote above. Pretty much the PC hasn't configured yet, not only for GPU. So much unexpected stuff going on, like GPU can change the way the PC behaves.

I don't know, I'm completely stumped. I'm going to try again in debug mode (this worked with my FTW) and see what happens.

I should mention that I've used DDU and installed the newest drivers every time I've swapped cards, all temps are normal, and I had no issues with the 780 for the week that it spent in another computer while I was using the 1080 in mine.

See attached screenshot – This is what I did, I only applied "Maximum Performance". Probably, virtual memory is a culprit but don't quote on me because I'm not really sure. If you don't have Samsung SSD, this may give you an idea. For HDD only, try fixing the virtual memory. Try first before you request for a RMA.

My lil bro's motherboard has only one PCI-E slot because it's a mini-iTX. Try the solution from my previous post above. Let me know the outcome.

I have the same issue but for now, only on Star Wars battlefront. I reinstalled the driver, i moved the card from the top PCI slot and it was fine but it did it again today..

i just try to put maximum performance in nvidia panel to see if it changes something

When I put the maximum performance option, I had the crash in 15 minutes. I believe that this is random.

Got a question about the RMA, do I need to pay the shipping cost first? As I need to ship the card to TW and just want to double check. Thanks
