Not to hijack the thread - but this same thing happened to me when I would load a checkpoint playing Doom 2016. On my 1070 FTW. It may just be that game because it's doing the same thing on the new 1070 I just RMA'd.

Trelor The card was in a 100% sealed retail box, it was missing the extra fan screws, the product manuals, and a few other things too. I bet that they are testing / inspecting the cards and someone dropped it and then put it back into the box threw a seal on it and sent it out. Chris from EVGA has already apologized for this and they will be replacing the card again as he knows that this is also unacceptable too.
Wait, did your RMA card come in an EVGA box? Mine came in a EVGA box with no software, manual or power connectors. I sent my old card back in the same box and kept the original retail box with all the accessories.

I am quite confident that the problem is hardware related, because once I got my RMA and before I installed it - I booted up Elite and caused a crash immediately. Then I performed a DDU, uninstalled the card, installed the RMA, installed the drivers, and a quick test of Elite showed the problem to be gone. Nothing else changed, I used the same version of the drivers, same power connectors, same PCIe slot etc. etc. And this is not a heat problem because I could boot the machine cold and make it crash within 5 minutes after boot in Elite Dangerous without even leaving the station. The problem that most of us were seeing was specifically a black screen with the fans on the GPU going haywire - like 4000+rpm or something. Not sure if you are seeing the same issue?

This is so frustrating for me, first email from EVGA Asia they said: Once we receive the card , we will advice our RD have firmware fixed the issue and send back the card to you ASAP. Then I asked again whether I get a new card or they just update the firmware and send it back to me and they reply with: We will arrange TNT to collect the card from you for GTX1080 FTW black screen issue, and we will replace the new card that already hardware updated. It's not grammatically correct so it's a little bit hard to understand, but based on the phrasing I would assume they meant I'll get a new card. Now after my RMA's approved, they sent me the invoice for customs with this message: We already arranged TNT to collect the card from you and will have your card firmware update once we get the card from TNT. So which is it? This is so not the quality of service that everyone is talking about, which is the reason I bought the card from them in the first place. Years of using other brand's card with no problem but the first EVGA got problem after a month. I am now stuck with this since Amazon's 30 days return is over, and EVGA Asia doesn't have any service other than RMA, which they can't even tell me what kind of RMA it is, neither upgrade or downgrade

Received my replacement 1080 FTW Hybrid today, thanks EVGA! Unfortunately may have to wait until the weekend to swap out the old one. The replacement appears at a glance to be brand new with full retail packaging, although I have not actually opened the shrink-wrap yet. tehbigbug For anyone wanting to know about EVGA serial numbers, here's what I was told by a rep: "The first two digits correlate to the year, so 16 being for 2016, the third digit designates the product type, 0 being power supply, 1 being graphics card, 2 being motherboard, etc. Then the 4th and 5th number designates the factory is was manufactured in, as far as I know. The 6th digit signifies the warranty length, this particular one being a 3, for 3 years, while 7,8,9 and 10 are the part number. The 11th digit is for the region it's sold in and the last 5 digits are simply the serial number sequence."
Hmm.. the 11th digit on my original Hybrid was 8, the replacement is 9. ..and the remaining 5 digits make the replacement within the first 10 issued. Roll on the weekend so I can open it up and try it out! :)

I should have received my replacement 1080 FTW today, but UPS being UPS, it was delayed due to a "mechanical failure." Very frustrating. I've had nothing but bad experiences with UPS. As a Canadian, it's not uncommon to get hit with exorbitant brokerage fees that can even surpass the cost of the item itself. Of course, that's not EVGA's fault or anything. They even gave me a free Advanced RMA, which usually isn't available to Canadians at all. Sent it Worldwide Expedited too, so it would have arrived in 3 business days had it not been delayed. As long as the new card doesn't have the same problem, I can live with it being a day late, especially after seeing what a hassle the RMA process can be for people in Europe or Asia. Fingers crossed...

jlp209 My latest replacement card was sealed but in that solid black box that comes inside the regular retail box. It didn't come with the regular retail box. Curious if anyone else is receiving replacement 1080's like this. I assume that means the card has been checked prior to shipping, fine by me.
No, it means that the problem is not as small as they pretend it is, and they have started saving money by not putting the Retail box around it.

Good morning everyone. So, my rma was approved. Obviously. But I have a question. I was approved for pick-up rma, but in the mail I got, it doesn' t say something. How do I continue from now on? Should I wait for someone to call me, or should I go directly to the courier office and send the defective card back without paying anything? And something else. Should I keep my retail box and send only the black box? I want my new card to come with its box and as I' ve read, this is not always the case.

You call EVGA, give them the RMA ID or RMA#, and they will arrange the pickup. According to the email you should only send the card and no extras, so you could keep the outer box.

FljpFl0pThat's what I thought too, until it happened again a week after, than again a couple hours later. All playing the same game, witcher 3. Now I can get the black screen around the 1 hour mark. I still have my old 770 so I don't have to stay without a card while waiting for RMA.
Downclocking my card to stock speeds and reducing the power limit slightly seems to have got mine stable while I wait for my RMA. Not sure which helped, but can't be bothered to experiment more, with an RMA on the way. Of course it could be a coincidence, but as it crashed about 6 times in a couple of hours when I first started gaming with it, so I doubt it!

Aha don ´t you go with another brand. .? I got Gigabyte G1 with EVGA hybrid cooler and with FTW BIOS- 1221MHZ all the way- I could not use the blower fan for PWMand RAM as Giga has got non ref PCB , but apart from that all is well. FTW must have a design flaw must probably on the PCB.

Shouldn't we start a sharepoint/google doc to centralise information about our cards 1080 FTW (shipping date, geographical location, serial number, RMA or not, Boost clock, temp....) It would ease the understanding of the problem and have a better view. Reading all these pages, it seems that Evga has not a full understanding of what goes wrong. I do not have enough time to play intensively to check if my new RMA card from last week is fully reliable.

Yeah that describes my issue perfectly. Doom briefly worked for me when I first tried playing the game. About 3 hours into it I had my first black screen with the GPU blasting full speed requiring a hard reset. Over the course of 2 weeks I attempted to play the game about 10 more times. Each checkpoint load resulted in the crash. Fearing for the GPU's health I stopped trying altogether and yelled at Bethesda support. Seems like this issue wasn't uncommon on their forums but they had no real advice. About a month and a half later I decided to give it another attempt thinking that maybe they had patched the game. To my surprise the game worked and I was able to make it near the end. Unfortunately, later that week, I came home to a black screen and the fans blasting just like they did when Doom crashed only this time the game wasn't running. I was unable to tell how long they had been running like that as I was out for a couple hours. I hard reset the computer and everything was fine. I did not boot Doom in the interim. The following evening I went to bed and woke up to the same issue. Again, I was unable to assess how long the fans had been blasting - probably half the night. This time the GPU was dead. Could only get monitor signal from my motherboard - Windows would not recognize the card. RMA'd the card and everything looks OK with the new card for now. I will not touch DOOM again as its the only game giving me this issue. I have no idea if it was the game that sped up the death of the card or if it was some underlying hardware issue. Just posting my story in case anybody is experiencing anything similar.

I think you need to test doom of its the only game it had the black screen with.. though I'm sure all games will eventually do it if your card is faulty. It's just a matter of time as it can happen within minutes or hours. You prob just played doom long enough for it to show up. Doom is not that hard on vga cards. Witcher 3 is.

EVGA will be shipping me a brand new card, but I suggest your all check yours immediately! NOTE: My RMA Card shipped in a nondescript EVGA box and was missing all of the original accessories, this is what got me worried it was a used card.. and I was correct.

wow, I'm on my 3rd RMA 1080 ftw (4th card) from Evga and I was never handed a recertified card before. My 4th card is arriving tomorrow so I'll have to see. Amazon have kindly extended my 30 day return to 60, if I get any problems this time round I'm getting a full refund and going else where.

Hmm, maybe I should've kept my original retail box then? I sent the defective card(s) back with everything they came with, including the retail box. The 1st RMA card I got came in the sealed retail packaging but had the missing bios switch. My 2nd / current RMA card came with just the black box (no retail box) but all accessories and manuals were included. No idea if refurbished or not. I haven't experienced the black screen issue now for almost the 5 days I've had the card, but I don't like the manufacturer silence on the matter and who knows if it could happen again 5 months from now. No idea whether or not I want to keep this.

J0NOX wow, I'm on my 3rd RMA 1080 ftw (4th card) from Evga and I was never handed a recertified card before. My 4th card is arriving tomorrow so I'll have to see. Amazon have kindly extended my 30 day return to 60, if I get any problems this time round I'm getting a full refund and going else where.
Wow that sucks, can you tell me how you got your Amazon return extended?
I contacted Amazon though their Contact Us page. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us (UK ofc) Choose "An order I placed" > "choose a different order" > selected my Evga 1080 ftw > then continue to "Tell us more about your issue". Just explained the situation that my order was going back and forth to Evga, and that each card was having the black screen + fan issue. They said if it comes back again with any problems just send it back to us. That's when they extended my return to 60 days to ensure I have enough time to test the card out. If there is a problem with the card all I need to reply to the last email Amazon sent me and they will create a personal return label. Just need to send it back then and done.

Thanks for that, I've decided to return the original defective card for a full refund, and send the RMA back to EVGA. I am very unhappy with this whole experience and will likely choose a different card or wait a while for the FTW issues to be fully resolved. EVGA support has been great, but at the current time I am not confident enough in the process to accept a replacement.

I got my replacement FTW from the RMA and I can say that it doesn't boost as well as the older card did (about 75 MHz less). I also notice quite a bit of coil whine under load and the LED seems to do a rainbow effect from the back of my case, where the older FTW was quite more white. However, the black screen/100% fan issue seems to be corrected but I'm still worried if it's gonna re-appear later since I haven't been able to play much since then (working lots of overtime hours lately).

I've read this entire thread and I am worried with buying a FTW edition. Even after several RMA's after the 'fix date' people seem to have issues. I think it is a better option to go with the Classified instead. In my Country the Classy is 2$ cheaper than the FTW anyway.
What do you guys think?

I haven't heard about the Classified having the same issue. But, if I had a choice now having 2 bad cards I personally wouldn't get an EVGA 1080, I would choose a different manufacturer all together. I don't have the confidence in these 1080 cards.

Go with the Classified. If its cheaper too its a no brainer. Not seen any indications that this issue effects the Classified....but then that could just be because they're still in fairly limited supply

I would not got with evga for the 1080 GTX, facts are : - We are completely in the dark regarding this issue (no official explanation from EVGA)
- Several RMA cards sent after 30th of August have still the issue.
Custom evga PCB seems to be the root cause because it is the only brand suffering from this kind of issue.
