test20090424 What a mess! Apparently EVGA made a bad decision on how to handle this black screen issue. Time to correct?
I concur. From looking around, this is not how EVGA is known to handle issues. It's damaged the reputation of the company (even though my card is *I hope* fine and an RMA has been offered) and will make my hesitant about other EVGA products, especially PSUs. However, I will continue to purchase EVGA, but I will certainly not purchase another product just after release, instead I'll wait to see if there's an issue. Edit: For anyone interested, my card's serial starts with 16108 and I've not seen any issues yet.

Something weird has just happened to me and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen too? Like others here, my 1080 FTW was black screening with the fans at full speed within 10-15 minutes of playing games like Witcher 3 and Skyrim, except with debug mode on. I sent it off to EVGA Taiwan and I'm waiting for them to receive it. In the mean time, I put my old card (Gigabyte GTX780 OC) back in since advance RMA isn't available here. I have never had problems with this card. I fired up Skyrim and 20 minutes later I've just had the black screen and fans speeding up error happen... so I'm quite confused. Is this a driver issue, or something else? It seems silly, but I wonder if the pci-e slot was somehow damaged by the 1080 FTW - it would explain why a card I've had for around 3 years has suddenly given me the exact same error that I've had with the faulty card. But I've never heard of a card damaging a slot before... I don't know, I'm completely stumped. I'm going to try again in debug mode (this worked with my FTW) and see what happens. I should mention that I've used DDU and installed the newest drivers every time I've swapped cards, all temps are normal, and I had no issues with the 780 for the week that it spent in another computer while I was using the 1080 in mine.

Is your CPU and/or memory overclocked? If so, revert to stock frequency and see if that helps.

Nope, neither are overclocked. I haven't overclocked my cards either because the 780 was OC'd by the factory and I wanted to make sure my 1080 wasn't faulty before I tinkered with it (which was probably a good thing in retrospect)

Did you guys tried using the windows 10 GTX1080 driver? I mean remove all the driver from Nvidia and let the windows update and install the m$ display card driver. I did this and seems I can complete the Skydiver test but wanna to get others to try is this is the issue.

I have not had any problems since receiving my RMA. I ran Heaven last night for 12 hours and this morning it was boosted to 2050Mhz @ 61c still going strong (with XOC on K-boost to max). I also run TimeSpy, FireStrike, etc. (all the free 3dMark benchmarks) several times without any problems whatsoever. I am running on the latest nVidia driver and performed a DDU, and manually deleted Precision XOC registry entries prior to installing the new card. Tonight I will start testing Elite Dangerous as that is the program that would cause crashes 100%. Defective Serial #: 1610xxxxxxxx3140 RMA Serial #: 1612xxxxxxxx0043

Glad to hear your having good luck so far. This is how my card was too initially, it would pass synthetic benchmarks with blinding colors for hours. However loading games the story changed, keep us updated.

I'm curious - does anyone here reading this have or know someone with a 1080 FTW card that does not have the black screen and fan problem? The reason I'm asking is because I sold one of my FTW to my brother and I'm concern if he should get a replacement. He doesn't have any problem yet, but it feels like it's just a matter of time before this problem kicks in.

I've had my 1080 FTW for a couple of months...no issues...have it currently overclocked to boost at 2125 MHz (I think it has more, just haven't spent the time.)

Enabling "Debug Mode" did fix the issue when I was using my OLD card, but that also locked the core lower so was only a temporary solution for me. I too have not had any problems since I got my RMA 1080 Hybrid FTW replacement card from the blackscreen 100% fan issue a few days ago. New card is running a little warmer at 44c at 1925mhz then the old one under load. Was stable with 15min of benchmarking but then again my old card did not have the problem with benchmarks running all day. It was crashing when I was when playing World of Warcraft, usually once every 1-8hours. I've done over 22hours in that game with the new card & no black screens yet, looking good so far!

Hi, I purchased a GTX 1080 FTW Gaming less than 10 days ago and everything was fine, playing mostly Elite Dangerous and doing 3D rendering. Today after 30 min playing Elite with an HTC vive with there high graphics settings for VR, my computer crashed with the fan of the GPU at 100% making a very loud noise and keep doing it until I force the complete shutdown of the computer. What I don't understand is that I've been playing for hours before sometimes for 2 or 3 hours staright with the same settings and never had any issue since today. The only recent update was the Geforce Experience and my drivers where up to date since the release of the last one 372.70. I contacted EVGA support and waiting for their answer. I am running a I7 6700k with Asus Z170 A, 16go Kingston 2400 and a Seasonic 650W 80+ Gold. EDIT: After the crash, I did a test with the Heaven Benchmark and didn't have any issue. Still need to find time to try again with Elite. And no OC.

This is exactly my story, hours, days of stable performance than out of the blue with games black screen. Seems to me this issue is a simple case of OC cards getting pass QC testing that would otherwise fail which explains the hardware issue. It's no different than OCing a computer having it run all tests than crash miserably in a unique stressing scenario. Hope your issue gets resolved quickly.

There is no rhyme or reason why, at least in my case. The error just happens. You have a faulty card and EVGA will replace it. Join the club!

Hi, how is the OC for the RMA card? My RMA card is on the way and it has the similar Serial Number as your RMA card.

Cards with sequential numbers won't give you any ideas of overclocking.. I know I've been threw 11 1080s and many were close if not brother and sister. All cards overclock differently from chip to chip.

I had just spoke to an EVGA rep, because I was concerned about this issue (and just order a 1080 FTW today), they said the problem has been fixed down the line, and all cards from here out *shouldn't* have that issue. Lets just see how accurate that is.

zmarchant Totally agree it's hardware. My point was that something must be set in certain games that is triggering it while others aren't. A 5 year old game crashes in 5 minutes but newer more demanding games don't seem to as fast (for me at least). Definitely hardware, yes. Just interesting why some cause this failure and others don't.
Yes, I'd like to know the root cause too from the technical point of view, not blaming EVGA. Just pure curiosity.
Without knowing the root cause; this issue (black screen + 100% fan spd) is difficult to reproduce. It has happened once during COD BO III gameplay but I have difficulties to reproduce the issue. I have tried Heaven and 3Dmark stress test but it doesn t trigger the issue. Which benchmark, stress test is triggering the issue 100% of the time? I have submitted a ticket and just got the answer to run in debug mode, are we sure that debug mode is 100% proof to avoid this issue ? I didn t spend 800 Euro to be stuck in debug mode. Thanks,
It's interesting that no Benchmark triggers this issue. I tested this numerous times with my defective EVGA FTW Edition by running numerous benchmarks with Heaven and Valley and 3dmark. Only games for me triggered this issue. It's just so interesting again that the benchmarks don't trigger this and of course all the reviewers on YouTube just basically test the card with those benchmarks. How convenient for EVGA. 😒
It actually crashed on me while using 3dmark surprisingly for the 1st time. I just ARMA'd mine today as it started crashing more heavily on all games i played except Ghost in a Shell.

Since EVGA knows of this issue and have supplied some customers with a Advance RMA within the US. I have purchased the EAR plan, will that be gone now since i have "technically used it" or can it transferred to the replacement? i don't want to have to keep spending on a EAR plan each time when some are being offered it.

vaxutopia I feel quite anxious about the new RMA card, the serial number is 1612536286802389 which is prior fromer card 1612536286802508 having the black screen + 100% fan issue. It was said that a hardware fix was put in place after the 30th of August (in your official forum) and I get a fully sealed card from prior that date.
How can I make sure that the new card is bullet proof ?
Plenty of suggestions in this thread I would think ?
BTW my faulty cards are 16125xxxx aswell. replacement will be 16129xxxx
Both my faulty Cards are 16125 aswell. dont know what the replacement will be yet.

Received my 2nd RMA FTW Hybrid card today, this time with a bios toggle switch . So far so good with minimal benching, out of the box with slave bios and voltage set to +100 in Afterburner, no overclock at all my boost clock runs at 2025mhz. Fingers crossed I won't experience any crashing over the weekend. Thanks EVGA for the prompt support.

Received my RMA card today. Seems to be doing fine... Like others say, it doesn't overclock as well. I have yet to see a clock above 2 GHz (although I haven't pushed it much and haven't had much time to test games so far). The serial numbers are the same except for the last four digits, the old being 2998 and the new being 5430.

Well, guess what. Black screen and fans spin up to 100%. No overclock, no nothing. I received my 1080 ftw yesterday, and this thing happened some moments ago, when I was playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. I bought the card directly from eu.evga.com and I made the purchase on the 2nd of September and it was shipped on the 8th of September. Obviously I will RMA it, but I hate if I have to pay the shipping cost. I already paid too much for a frustrating issue. I hope someone from the evga team wil explain better how the process goes exactly, because it asks a lot of information, just for one support ticket. I don' t know if this is relative, but my serial number is 16125xxxxxxxxxxx. I' ll try this debug fix, but I didn't pay premium for that. First evga graphics card and I' m starting to regret it. I hope at least, that the support is as good as I hear.
