Bumping this great thread to ask what's the status now. With the unlocked octacore from Intel coming out soon, this would be nice to cool down Haswell-E.

I have been interested in this project for a LONG time, so well thought out, an awesome idea frankly.

oh i know...I just haven't spent too much time in the CPU block arena.  Although I am starting a full cpu/vreg/chipset block which will cover everything, so I will see how that turns out.  If I like what I see I may open this pandora's box back up.

I can bet a bunch of guys here and on OCN/XS would line up for this if it means getting that octacore close to 5 GHz on water.

/hands Nateman_doo a crowbar OPEN PANDORA'S BOX!!  Pry it open if you have to.
Many people have been waiting for this for a VERY long time, frankly, I would love to test one myself, could be a excellent item.  Would love to FINALLY see it come to fruition.

Well, it's been almost 6 years since the OP, and a little over a year and a half since the last post. So I think it's time to bring this one back from the dead again. Come on Nateman, you know you want to complete this adventure. I'm still very interested in this setup for my X99 board.

Story of my life, always a minute late and dollar short lol. I am still interested though. I know that it may not be the "prettiest" option out there, but sometimes as I've seen you and Dave B say "function over form". I would love any way possible to remove a little more heat from my CPU. That is without going phase change or LN2 lol. Need something a little more practical for my 24/7 use.

HAH Yes, function over form ALWAYS!
Also agreed, Nateman needs to build the next gen of this.  I remember your old first version on the X58 all those years ago.
Don't say Phase isn't 24/7 practical or you might get Hallowen in here telling you he does it and showing you how  :)

Comeon Nateman, give me a reason to not buy a Raystorm Pro for my next upgrade, or the big EK.

Haha, I knew I could get you to post.

Let me rephrase the part about phase change. Phase change is not 24/7 practical on my wallet lol.

I'm also in need of a CPU block upgrade. I've got an Alphacool NeXXoS block. And while it was OK for the 2600k that my system was originally built around, it leaves much to be desired on my 5930K. So I've been contemplating an upgrade to something newer and better. I just figured if I were to do anything it needed to be this. And that would give me a reason to finally install my nateman_doo X99 FTW board blocks.

I actually did a complete redesign of it. I have to look around for the CAD designs somewhere...

Yes, progress. Even if it's just a little bit lol. Well if you get around to moving on and want some funds for prototyping materials let me know. I'm sure I can come up with something to move this along .

Re:Finally! Air Cooled CPU Waterblock! 2017/07/16 18:36:50 (permalink)
Soooooo Nateman, since the X299 shares mounting hardware with X99, I think now is a good time to make a full copper air cooled waterblock, copper bottom and top, we can get creative with the fan form there, you could also have the cooling fins on both top and bottom, personally I would leave the fan running all the time, just set a curve, for it to ramp up above a certain temp.

Maybe send one to Hallwen also, see how it does on a chiller, hopefully you can coax him out of clocking retirement with that.

When is this coming?  None of us are getting any younger here  :)

Re:Finally! Air Cooled CPU Waterblock! 2017/07/17 08:35:27 (permalink)
Oye Vey... you guys kill me with this :)
Ironically, I have 2 huge chunks of copper sitting in my basement for Hallow and John, that were specifically for chiller/LN2/DICE application.  It is one block to rule them all.  By huge, I mean a few pounds.  Each block is close to 10 lbs.  I still have these blocks with about an inch of dust on top of them.

As for this, I think I mentioned I have a re-design.  Just have to get busy with a slitting saw.  I still have a base already machined I could use.  Just need to get a section of copper for the top and get to milling.

Will require special tooling, and work holding.  But, like I said, I do still have the CAD files, so that is a plus.

Well, I am planning an upgrade in the next year, so that sounds to me like you need to get working on this but you still have a good amount of time :)
You also can't announce something that awesome, and show a working prototype, AND get some tests that show how good it is then NOT make it.  We have no intention of letting it go.

+1 to this. Sounds like this will be needed for some of the new CPU's coming out. Heck even with some of the better offerings out there I'm still not happy with the temps on my current 5930K. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if anything is needed just give me a shout and I'll do my part to further the cause ;)

^^^ +1

i also know a few others I could loan it to for further testing, you have an active group of people who want one and will use it.
If needbe I will go in for 2, when I rebuild the other halfs system within the next year too.  This needs to happen, and it is starting to sound like you may be a little behind schedule.
